Former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Dr. Emeka Anyaoku, has stated that the treatment meted to a Nigerian diplomat in Jakarta, Indonesia, recently, indicated the level of shame with which the rest of the world holds Nigeria.
He lamented that Nigeria is not only “fast drifting away from the dreams of the founding fathers,” it has also degenerated into “international irrelevance.”
Anyaoku also noted that the country had slid into the ranks of poverty-stricken nations.
He spoke at the 10th edition of Emeka Anyaoku Lecture Series on Good Governance in Awka on Thursday.
“Developments in this country are pushing Nigeria to the brink of national disaster,” he said; adding, that the level of deterioration had robbed Nigeria of respect, while citizens lack sense of belonging.
He criticized the recent assault on a Nigerian diplomat in Indonesia, noting that the issue was an evidence of “the ignominy with which the rest of the world holds Nigeria.”
