As the countdown begins for the much-anticipated Gateway Games 2024, Tolu Bankole, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Working Committee and former legislator in the Ogun State House of Assembly, has warmly welcomed athletes, officials, and guests from across Nigeria and beyond to Ogun State.
In a press statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday, Bankole described the Games as more than a sporting event calling it “a national celebration of unity, youth potential, and sporting excellence.” The Gateway Games, which will run from May 16 to 30 across multiple venues including the M.K.O. Abiola International Stadium in Abeokuta, is set to showcase Nigeria’s rising talents and rekindle the nation’s sporting pride.
Bankole used the opportunity to laud Governor Dapo Abiodun for what he termed a “sports renaissance” in the state. He praised the governor’s investment in youth development, upgraded sports infrastructure, and robust security measures that have positioned Ogun State as a hub for national and international sporting events.
“Under Governor Abiodun’s leadership, Ogun State has experienced tremendous progress—from improved road networks to state-of-the-art sports facilities,” Bankole noted. “This administration has created a strong foundation for hosting a tournament of this scale and significance.”
Highlighting Ogun’s peaceful atmosphere and cultural vibrancy, Bankole encouraged visitors to immerse themselves in the local experience. He referenced the state’s diverse ethnic makeup and harmonious interfaith relations, as well as its renowned hospitality, cuisine, and entrepreneurial spirit.
“Whether Egba, Remo, Yewa, or Ijebu, the people of Ogun State welcome all with warmth,” he said. “Enjoy our dishes Lafun, iyan, ikokore, ofada rice, and more and explore the culture that makes us the gateway to Nigeria’s future.”
Bankole ended on a patriotic note, calling on athletes to compete with honor and the audience to embrace the Games as a unifying moment for the country.
“Gateway Games 2024 is our collective pride. Let it mark the rise of new champions and the celebration of everything that makes Nigeria great,” he concluded.
The Gateway Games 2024 is expected to draw thousands of participants and spectators, offering a blend of sporting excellence and cultural celebration in the heart of southwest Nigeria.
