England manager Thomas Tuchel has revealed his thoughts on Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi and his failed move to Liverpool.
Guehi underwent a medical ahead of joining the Premier League champions, but Crystal Palace pulled the plug in the final hours after manager Oliver Glasner got his way in heated discussions with chairman Steve Parish in what was a devastating for the England international.
These discussions also focused on Palace’s failure to sign Igor Julio, who instead joined West Ham United on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion, which effectively blocked Guehi from leaving in the final few hours.
Speaking to the media ahead of this weekend’s World Cup qualifier with Andorra, Tuchel revealed that the Palace star is doing just fine despite his dream move being destroyed with just hours to spare.
“We had a chat with him and he looks absolutely fine,” said Tuchel.
“He looks very impressive on the field. He has a couple of very impressive weeks behind him on the sporting side and the performance side.
“He is the main driver of Crystal Palace’s success. He is the captain and the leader. He played very impressively at the end of last season and at the start of this season.
“He continued exactly like this in camp, so it was very impressive. He handles it with respect and with grace, and with a brilliant attitude.”
The centre-back is one of England’s best, and he will compete with the likes of Newcastle United’s Dan Burn for a spot under Tuchel. Guehi does not want to pen a new contract at Palace, and it looks certain that he will leave the side in what is only a matter of time as manager Arne Slot monitors him closely.
