News reaching TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) from Mali indicates that the junta has named the president of transitional government.
TNG reports the junta named former Minister of Defence, Ba N’Daou as president of the transitional government and Coup leader Colonel Assimi Goita as Vice-President.
N’Daou and Goita are to lead the country for several months before staging elections, returning Mali to civilian rule.
The transitional government is to be inaugurated on September 25.
Recall that in August Malian President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita and Prime Minister Boubou Cisse were arrested by the military in an apparent mutiny.
After the military coup, pressure has been mounting to return the country to civilian rule.
Earlier in September, ECOWAS called for the appointment of a civilian president and prime minister for a transitional period by Sept. 23, threatening to impose a full embargo on Mali.
It was unclear whether the arrangement would satisfy ECOWAS, which last week threatened to step up economic sanctions and impose a total embargo on landlocked Mali if its conditions were not met.
