BREAKING: Port Harcourt serial women killer sentenced to death

A Port Harcourt High Court on Monday sentenced Mr Gracious David-West to death for the serial killing of nine women.

The court found Mr David-West guilty of killing nine women on different occasions in brothels situated in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State Capital.

Police prosecutors said 26-year-old David-West strangled his victims in hotel rooms across Nigeria between July and September 2019.

Presiding Judge, Justice Adolphus Enebeli said he is to die by hanging.

One of his alleged victims survived the attack, but was not a witness during the trial.

Authorities say her whereabouts are unknown despite being told not to leave the State.

Police say he also confessed to the murders of six other women elsewhere but he was not charged for those murders for lack of evidence.

Authorities say the pattern of the murders point to a serial killing – he had sex with his victims before binding their arms and feet with strips of white sheets.

He also used sheets to strangle them, the court heard.

Several of his victims were sex workers.

At the beginning of the case and unrepresented by a counsel, David-West had pleaded guilty to the murders but the judge demanded a trial because of the “gravity of the crime”.

REVEALED: Governor El-Rufai to create 2 emirates out of Zazzau

Information from impeccable sources from Kaduna State Government House reveals that there are plans by Governor Nasir El-Eufai to explore the powers given to him by Article II of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) to create two additional emirates out of Zazzau.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) gathers the development follows the allege refusal by the kingmakers to recommend the Governor’s candidate, Ambassador Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli (Jnr) as a possible successor to the late Emir of Zazzau, Shehu Idris.

The Emirates are Kaduna and Kudan, implying that there will now be three Emirates in Zazzau which are Zaria, Kaduna and Kudan.

Already, a draft bill for the amendment of Emirates and Chieftaincy bill is being prepared for onward transmission to the State Assembly for amendment.

Article II of the Constitution of Nigeria vests the executive power of the State in the Governor and charges him with the execution of state law, alongside the responsibility of appointing state executive, diplomatic, regulatory, and judicial officers subject to the approval of the Assembly members.

If the bill is assented, Magajin Garin Zazzau, Ambassador Ahmed Nuhu Bamali would be the Emir of Kaduna, while Yarima would likely be in Zaria and Iya Aminu at Kudan.

Justice Bello who is the only Nigerian nominated for election to the International Criminal Court (ICC) jury in 2020 allegedly presented a poor performance in the assessment exercise according to a report by the ICC.

“…based on his answers to questions particularly regarding participation by victims and the functions of the Pre-Trial Chamber (but also other areas), the candidate appeared notably to have a very limited knowledge of the Rome Statute, the practices and procedures of the Court and its jurisprudence.

“Based on both his professional experience as well as his answers during the interview and bearing in mind particularly his lack of detailed knowledge of the workings of the Court, the Committee concluded that the candidate was only formally qualified for appointment as judge of the International Criminal Court…” The report read.

  • Special Report: Looming hunger in Northern Nigeria as bandits, flood truncate farming activities

Special Report: Looming hunger in Northern Nigeria as bandits, flood truncate farming activities

Activities of bandits and the inevitable flooding in the climax of the raining season is already threatening to push some communities in Northern Nigeria especially, the North-West into famine.

While the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reported in September this year that over a hundred thousands homes and wide areas of crops have been destroyed in recent flooding in Jigawa, Kano, Kebbi and Sokoto states, some farmers in bandits ravaged areas in Kaduna State have abandoned their crops and farms for fear of being Kidnapped for ransom.

In Jigawa State alone, about 50,000 homes in 17 out of the 27 Local Government Areas (LGAs) are reportedly damaged.

In an interview with TheNewsGuru.com, TNG, Jigawa based Journalist Malami Ibrahim revealed that an estimated 100,000 persons in the state may experience hunger and starvation thereby adding to the already alarming poverty rate in the state. He said that the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) reported early in September this year said that as many as 20 people have died in the flooding. Many of those fatalities were as a result of building collapse. “Close to fifty thousand Persons are displaced in seventeen local governments, their farmlands are not saved either, they seriously need attention….” Ibrahim said.

The situation is similar in Sokoto and it’s neighboring Kebbi state. The two neighboring states who are known for their perennial flood related ecological issues are now battling to tame the August flood disaster that is threatening the livelihoods of it’s citizens which is predominantly agrarian.

TNG gathered that about 11 LGAs namely; Argungu, Birnin Kebbi, Bunza, Suru, Koko-Besse, Yauri, Shanga, Bagudo, Maiyama, Jega and Dandi are affected by flood. “…..six bridges are completely destroyed, about 500,000 hectares of crops including rice, millet, sorghum, maize and sugarcane are completely bad….” Hussaini Jalo a sugar-cane farmer told TNG. Two among many actualities is the fact these farmers will not send any yield to the market as usual and more disturbing, feeding themselves and their families.

Known for cultivating Rice, Kebbi farmers are now disquieted, they seeking for Stimulus and relief packages from their governor Atiku Bagudu. TNG spoke to a resident of Dandi local government via the telephone, according to her she lost a complete two acres of rice farm to flood. She said she is not the only one affected by the flood. After meeting a host of sources from Kebbi, TNG authoritatively gathered that about 600,000 acres of farmland have been destroyed by flood.

Goronyo, Rabah, Sokoto-North, Wamakko, Silame and Binji are the local government affected by the recent flood in sokoto with up to 27,000 farmers loosing their sources of livelihoods and over 5000 displaced.

Kaduna and Neighboring Kano States have mile case. The two states known for high commercial activities may not have to worry like their Jigawa, Sokoto and Kebbi counterparts. Only Danbatta and Rogo Local government are affected by flood in Kano. TNG gathered that only four people died from the recent flood in Kano and only houses numbering 200 according to the Kaduna State Emergency Management agency where destroyed.

TNG notes that while Kaduna was yet to witness any devastating flood disaster as at the time of filing this report, however, the continuous warning drums of hunger and starvation have continued to beat especially in Gwada and Kargo villages in Igabi local government areas of the state where residents alleged that bandits have forced them to abandon their crops in the farms.

Aminu Musa told TNG that he cultivated guinea-corn worth N25,000 last year but couldn’t harvest for fear of being Kidnapped. “kudin jari noman dubu goma ne na kashe sa’anan da noman da shuki duka na Kash dubu ishirin da buyer….” Musa said bitterly in Hausa meaning, “I paid N10,000 to be given the farmland and further spent N25,000 to buy and plant the guinea-corn ….” Musa said since last year only farmlands within the neighborhoods are being cultivated which is not enough to feed his family.

Sani Abdullahi from same Gwada also claimed he has to abandon a farmland given to him in Kargo village for fear of the bandits. He said the bandits attack and loot their Communities. “we use to here them testing their guns….” Abdullahi said. Asked whether they have reported the matter to authorities, he said on several occasions police and the Army have gone round on patrol but found no on. “I have no choice than to start relying on some petty business that can afford me drinking water, Abdullahi said.

    CSO berets FG, States

Early detection warning was taken with non-nonchalant attitude, Comrade Abantlehe Executive director , MEDIA CRUX told TNG. According to Mr Abantlehe, “NIMET predictions was not adhered to by both the state and federal government. Governance is serious business of protecting lives and properties of the flood. Whether man-made or not it is a must that predictions any disaster must be taken with serious with immediate alacrity….” He said. He added that the impact of climate change which is very key in the factors that causes flood should be tamed. “Northern Nigeria is known with a small amount of trees which are also removed illegally for commercial purposes, I think a tree planting program should be introduced in the north, if this is done flood will be reduced, also there are no drainage in Northern Nigeria, the north have a poor Architectural setting, this must be tamed….” he said.

“….The various state government may also have to adopt hunger prevention strategies during the ongoing harvest season to avoid famine come 2021 dry season….” He added

On the issues of bandits in Igabi, Abantlehe said ; ” it is because the bandits are carrying arms if not the villages would have repel them…. We must tame the proliferation of light arms into the country. Let there be a collaborations between the countries where these arms are coming from so they will killing farmers, our borders must be controlled….” He said. He added that unemployment and poverty is another factor. “Since the bandits Kidnap and ask for money it means they are hungry so government must create jobs…..” He added.

JUST IN: Gunmen invade FCT community, abduct 20

Terror was on Thursday unleashed in Tungan Maje community, Gwagwalada area council of the federal capital territory (FCT).

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports unknown armed men invaded the community shooting sporadically and left with 20 people.

Meanwhile, 5 persons were rescued by the efforts of community vigilantes but were overpowered at a point.

According to sources from the community, the gunmen operated for almost 2 hours without any reprimand by security forces.

Efforts to reach the FCT police commissioner proved abortive at the time of filing this report.

Recall that the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) had in an internal memo cautioned that terrorists had selected targets to hit. The NCS listed five locations where Boko Haram members are hiding and planning the attacks.

Following the security alert, the Police Command in Abuja had assured members of the public of protection. The command said it had deployed intelligence gathering mechanism and crime-fighting measures to beef up security across the FCT.

In a statement on Sunday, Anjuguri Manzah, Public Relations Officer, said the FCT Police is working in close synergy with sister security agencies. He told residents to report any suspicious persons or activities in and around their neighbourhoods at the nearest Police Division.

The spokesman also gave out phones lines of the Command Control Centre. The numbers are 08032003913, 08061581938, 07057337653, and 08028940883.

Also, the Nigerian Army had reacted to the planned Boko Haram attacks.

The Defence Headquarters has assured residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and adjoining states that the military and other security agencies had been on red alert to ensure their safety.

The Coordinator, Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. John Enenche, gave the assurence in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.

Enenche said the armed forces had intensified effective surveillance of the FCT and other states to checkmate activities of the criminals.

He said the assurance was “imperative sequel to a purported memorandum from the Nigeria Customs Service warning its staff on a possible attack on the FCT”.

“The Armed Forces in conjunction with other security and response agencies particularly the core intelligence agencies hereby assure the public that preventive and preemptive intelligence are ongoing.

“The general public is thus advised to go about their lawful businesses undeterred.

“Furthermore, the Armed Forces of Nigeria and other security agencies wish to assure the general public that the offensives against the common enemies of this Nation will not cease until normalcy is restored in all parts of the country.

“Hence, the public is equally enjoined to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity accordingly,” he said.

Recall that the military had recently raided identified camps of the DarulSalam/Boko Haram terrorist group in parts of Kogi and Nasarawa States.

It neutralised scores of the terrorists and rescued over 700 of their family members and abductees in the raid following verified intelligence reports on the locations.

Kaduna killings: Lingering pains as survivors narrate struggle for survival

After agonizingly burying and mourning their loved once who were killed by bandits suspected to be fulani herdsmen about three weeks ago, residents of Kurmin Masara, Atak-mawei, Kibori in Zango Kataf Local Government area of Kaduna State are still disquieted while trying to recover from the unfortunate incident.

Recall that suspected Fulani Herdsmen invaded the three villages in the wee hours of August 7, this year killing about 15 persons and destroying properties.

When TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) visited the scenes of the attacks on Saturday, security operatives were manned at Strategic points in the various Communities paving way for normalcy to return. But this has not in any way healed the injured victims, calm the bereaved and the displaced who are forced to run to neighbors and relations within and outside the Communities for shelter and food.

47 year old Ephraim Bala is one of the survivors of the attack in Kurmin Masara. Bala told TNG thenewsguru.ng that he lost his son and two cars in the raging fire set by the attackers on his house. “….I was seriously affected, my house was burnt alongside my son and my two cars…. I have two wives and right now we have been surviving on friends and cousins….” Bala said. Asked what has changed since the attack, Bala said supports have been coming from different organisations and security operations had been intensified. He however said that the three weeks have been hell to those affected by the attack.

From the household of Bitrus Ali, (aka Ma Bitrus Ali) also in Kurmin Masara, is Dennis John who narrated how confused he is and still has no idea how to start life again. “Our entire house and properties were burnt to ashes, everyone has run for safety, I am the only one left here and am so confused, I don’t know where to start…..”John said. Another respondent, a woman who pleaded anonymity said she now leaves from hand to mouth since the dead of her husband during the attack. She pleaded with president Muhammadu Buhari and other well meaning Nigerians to come to their help and end their ongoing hardships.

In Kibori, TNG visited the home of Mba Aboi where four men were killed including a teenage boy. The house was also burnt down. It was a pathetic scene as women whose husbands and helpers were killed cried when asked how they are faring. According to one of the surviving bereaved, Mbason Michael, life has been tough. He said his Father, elder brother, uncle and nephew were killed and their entire house burnt down during the attack. “Right now we the survivors have no place to stay, no food, to find a place to sleep is a problem, the situation we are facing is unbearable….” Michael said.
