Southern Kaduna carnage: How Fulani boy led gang to kill his benefactors

Persons who are displaced as a result of herdsmen attack in Gan-Gora, Zangon Kataf Local Government area of Kaduna State have to come out from their places of refuge to receive help from donors and visitors on philanthropic visits.

The community suffered two different attacks in July and August this year where up to fourteen (14) persons lost their lives and over fifteen (15) injured as well as hundreds of houses and other properties burnt by the attackers.

So far, Humanitarian workers have been going there to offer relieve materials for the surviving victims.

In an interview various affected victims in the attack narrated their ordeal which they said it’s quite unbearable.

Na’omi Yakubu is the wife of Yakubu Yashim a wanted victim by the fulani attackers who invaded Gan-Gora. According to her the attackers are known faces who employed the use of other mercineries. In her “….we were just in our rooms when we heard the sound of guns from different angles of the community, we then move out of our homes and started running, honestly our community have been destroyed and many people killed. ….. I was lucky my family escaped…. Those that took cover within the community told us that the Fulani attackers came looking for my husband Mr Yakubu Yashim…. My husband who was nicknamed Taure by the fulani is now hidding… On the day of the attack, they entered our house shouting; where is Taure, where is Taure…. our neighbors saw them while hidding, they said they are looking for my husband, his relatives to slaughter them….”

“…..The gang leaders of the fulani attackers are two and we know them, they are called Yakubu Aruwa and Aminu, Aruwa is very close to us, his Fulani parents bore him in our land, he grew up on my family’s land, we watch him grow here in this community, we gave his parents the land and there, they gave birth to him (Aruwa)…he led the attackers to our house to come and kill us, but thank God we escaped…..”

Another resident of Gan-Gora Benjamin Shem Shemang, said his entire household who survived the attack are now residing in an internationally displaced persons (IDP) Camp in neighboring town, Zonkwa.

He said “…. On 27 July, last month precisely, the fulani, invaded our town here, during which many innocent people where killed and attacked, and my younger, Stephen Balat was killed and our house burnt, since then we were displaced. Presently, I am coming all the way from Zonkwa to this place in order to receive relieve materials, right now , we are displaced, many of us don’t have anywhere to go ….most of us have to run” he said “… we don’t have confidence in staying here most especially in the night…..” He added.

At the moment military special forces are seen on motorcycles patroling bushes and reportedly searching and disarming Fulani Herders.

Ongoing Call for signatures in a petition to stop Kaduna State governor from speaking as guest in the forth Coming Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has reached five hundred and still counting.

The petition was designed by one Usani Odum on change.org after a couple of lawyers claim governor Elrufai is a wrong choice following his recent comments on national TV about killings in his state which they termed “diversionary”.

According to Odum “….The senseless killings in southern Kaduna must stop. The political correctness of Governor El-Rufai on national TV is diversionary. It is a reversal to have him speak to lawyers on security, when Governor (Babagana) Zulum of Borno a better person can do so”

“We may not be able to do anything to stop the killings, but we can stop the governor from speaking at the NBA-AGC to show our disapproval of the manner he has handled the situation!!” Odum wrote.

In a letter addressed to the NBA conference planning committee Chairmam titled “Request to Withdraw the Offer of Platform at the 2020 Annual General Conference of the NBA to Mallam Nasir el-Rufai” a group of lawyers said they are not attending the conference listing ten allegations against el-Rufai and his son, Bello who is currently a legislative Aid to the Kaduna Central lawmaker, Senator Uba Sani.

“El-Rufai had during the run-up to the 2019 general elections threatened that any foreigner who interfered in the election would leave Nigeria in “body bags”. The lawyers wrote.

They added that “his recent comments on national TV about the killings in Southern Kaduna is Diversionary”

Meanwhile reacting to this is the member representing Zangon Kataf/Jaba Federal Constituency Mr Amos Gwamna Magaji who called on governor Elrufai to emulate one of is predicessors Ahmed Makarfi. “Makarfi won the war of insecurity in Kaduna because he had the interest of everyone at heart, he didn’t favour those only from his religion, Makarfi was not arrogant, Elrufai must learn this…..” Magaji said.

Kaduna Carnage: Aboi Family in Zangon Kataf still battling to recover, treat son’s gunshot wounds

Memories and impact of the 5th of August attack by armed men of Fulani ethnicity on Apiashyim and Kibori villages in Zangon Atyap (Kataf) Local Government Area still lingers.

Six people died and 20 homes were burnt down in Apiashyim, and nine people were killed in Kibori village on that fateful day of the attack. The attackers reportedly proceeded to Magamiya and unleash mayhem in the wee hours of 6th August without a reprimand.

Among survivors of the attack was the family of Aboi in Kibori whose complete household was burnt down to ashes. One of the surviving children in the family Michael Mbason who chatted with TNG seems hopeless while narrating the damage caused by the Fulani militia which he termed as very devastating.

The biological father of Michael Mbason, Mr Michael Aboi was killed alongside his two grandchildren. One of the grandchildren is severely injured and is currently receiving treatment. “….we have been referred to Kaduna Barau Dikko Specialist Hospital….” Mbason said. “….we were referred by the Zonkwa General Hospital to Kaduna to proceed for the treatment, the boy is just 11 years old and he suffered lots of injuries, he could have been killed if not that he scamper for safety..” Mbason added.

Asked on the extent of the damage, Mbason said the entire house, housing his extended family has been burnt down by the attackers leaving survivors in the family to the only option of squatting with relations in neighboring villages and the state capital. He called on the government of Kaduna State to intervene objectively in the ongoing Fulani herdsmen onslaught in Southern Kaduna and see to the end of violence in the region.

TNG also reach out to the ward councilor of Zaman-Dabo Ward, Mr. Cleophas Yohanna who stated that there is a deliberate attempt by Fulani ethnic group to secure a space in the Atyap land which is not possible. “the event of June 5 made them guilty. After Killing Yusuf Magaji son of a pastor over a piece of farmland. On noticing that the Atyap people discovered the corps of Magaji, they started running away knowing what will follow, even after we pleaded they should not leave, they ran away only to return and attack us, this is not fare…..” Yohanna said.

The Fulani Militia according to residents of Magamiya, Kibori and Kurmin Masara sought mercenaries as reinforcement before laying siege on Atyap land.

At the moment, a twenty-four-hour curfew has been imposed in the entire local government as well as the deployment of the Nigerian Army special forces to tame further attacks and reprisals in the area.

Boko Haram: Northern Governors demand probe of Mailafiya’s allegations

The Northern Governors Forum (NGF) have called on security agencies to investigate allegations made by a former deputy governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Dr Obadiah Mailafiya that one of them is a Commander of the Boko Haram sect.

Chairman of the NGF and governor of Plateau State, Simon Bako Lalong made this known in a statement made available to TheNewsGuru.com, TNG on Thursday.

TNG reports that Mailafiya in a live streamed interview with a radio station on Monday alleged two repentant terrorists identified a serving northern governor as a Boko Haram leader, an allegation the NGF finds implicative and deserves investigation.

“….We as Northern Governors have met severally to discuss insecurity in the Northern Region and the nation at large where we did not only condemn the activities of terrorist groups such as Boko Haram, bandits, armed robbers, kidnappers and other criminals, but also engaged the President and all heads of security agencies in finding solutions to the problem…..”

“To now say that one of our members is leading Boko Haram in Nigeria is a serious allegation that cannot be swept under the carpet. We demand immediate and thorough investigation”. Lalong said.

PHOTOS: Again, gunmen unleash mayhem in Southern Kaduna, wipe out two families

  • Flagrant disregards for Covid-19 rules in FCT, neighboring States as FG looks forward to phase 3 eased lockdown

Flagrant disregards for Covid-19 rules in FCT, neighboring States as FG looks forward to phase 3 eased lockdown

    …number of mobile courts reduced

…ministerial task force must act now, residents insists….

Flagrant disregards for Covid-19 prevention guidelines remains conspicuous in some Satelite towns around Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and it’s neighboring bother Communities. This could result in a surge in the number of cases of the novel dreaded virus in Nigeria for obvious reasons. The FCT being a host to tourists, political activities and jobs seekers is densely populated with people travelling in and out it shores to different parts of the country on daily basis.

Recall that upon discovery of the virus in Nigeria in February 27 this year, there where strick regulations and guidelines for preventing the disease including the use of mobile courts to try erring citizens. Citizens where locked up in their homes for five weeks before the commencement of the ease of lockdown which began in phases with the first in May and the second in June. The second phase which is meant to end on July 20, was recently extended to August 6 due to the Sallah celebrations. This brought a lot of respite for Nigerians; number of mobile courts have now reduced, interstate travels are activated religious activities have resume, and some other restricted activities. All these brought a lot of respite for citizens. But the respite is now being taken advantage of. Citizens are now taking advantage of the freedom brought by the ease of the lockdown. No one seems interested in inconveniencing themselves. Most citizens come out without observing the rules of the ease of the lockdown such as maintaining social distance, compulsory use of face masks and reduced number of passengers in vehicles. Tricycles are to limit their activities to areas already designated and are allowed a maximum of 3 persons (driver and two passengers). Taxis are mandated to carry a maximum of 4 persons at a time (driver and 3 persons). Buses are to reduce occupancy at any time to 50% of installed capacity. Banks are to limit access by customers to allow for safe distancing reasons and limit the number of staff working on their premises to between 30% and 50%. All these are currently being flouted due to the absence of enforcement.

TNG correspondent embarked on a journey from Nassarawa to Niger State passing through the FCT. It was a risky journey. Commercial buses canvassing for passengers from Masaka in Nassarawa State to Suleja in Niger State engage in overloading. They had no regards for Covid-19 prevention protocols of social distancing. They hiked the transport fares even while engaging in overloading. From Masaka (Nassarawa State) to Kubwa in the FCT for instance cost N800 which use to be N600 before Covid-19 period. New Nyanya and Gwandara residents also in neighboring Nassarawa also have to pay up to N700 to go to Suleja, Niger State. “Na four-four ohhh…” the bus conductor screamed agressively to passengers. “…. if u no one enter stay one side….” Meaning if you can’t pay the fare keep off the bus, the conductor announced.

Passengers with urgent appointment with no other options have to just risk it. There are a good number of them. They throng these buses rushing to catch up with one appointment or the other. TNG Managed to speak to one of them who pleaded anonymity. “I work with the FCTA (referring to the Federal Capital Territory Development Authority), I am going to Kubwa to inspect an Estate Layout design…. I got the instruction via WhatsApp this morning from my superior….” he said. Asked whether he is aware of the risk involved in boarding an overloaded vehicle, he said there is nothing to be afraid of since the lockdown has been eased. “I believe the virus (referring to Covid-19) has been dealt with. We have been boarding these types of vehicles for over a week now and nothing happened….” He said.

Hajiya Alero is a retailer. She buys wrappers and female shoes on whole sale at the Suleja Market to sell on ratail prices for her customers in New Nyanya and Masaka. According to her, siezing the must viable opportunity to gain more profits is very important incase one is taken unaware. She told TNG how the lockdown affected her business and how determined she is to cover up what she lost. “I am afraid of another lockdown, so I have to make money incase of another lockdown, things are hard she said. Finding a car from this place to Suleja is not easy, that is why am in this overloaded car” she said.

Reasons for flouting these prevention guidelines is not far fetched. The FCT ministerial task team for enforcement of Covid-19 prevention guidelines are no longer seen in that area. Even the mobile courts situated at AYA are no longer functional. Unlike during the lockdown the AYA which is a bypass in the FCT that leads to Niger, Kaduna and other FCT neighboring States used to be very busy area with security officials beeming their searchlights on defaulters of the Covid-19 prevention laws. This is no longer the case. Nigerians move in clusters and get loaded on vehicles without face masks and without social distance. “The authorities have to do something, things should not be taken for granted. The virus is real, Nigerians are too relaxed…. The mobile courts have to return, I don’t know why that have stopped working ….” A civil servant Mr Wilson Onoja told TNG.

Overloaded vehicles are visible within the road that leads to Suleja from Nassarawa State. Even commercial tricycles are not left out. Four passengers are loaded in each tricycle which is against two as instructed by the Covid-19 prevention guidelines by the Federal Goverment.

In other cases, Video evidence by TNG says it all. Citizens now go to church without face mask and sit as high as 9 per row which is against the Covid-19 prevention guidelines. When TNG visited a church at Nyanya area of the FCT, majority of the worshipers where not putting on face masks. Although they had the non-contact thermometers checking body temperature as well as hand sanitizers but the densely populated church had worshipers interacting without face mask which raises a lot of questions. The story is the same in some Mosques. Some of the mosques in Nyanya also had residents praying without facemasks. TNG accosted a worshipper Musa Ali who claimed that the Covid-19 breakout has been tamed to the bearest minimum. He said the ease of the lockdown means the goverment can contain the virus and have therefore allowed citizen to go about their normal business.

All these disregards for the covid-19 prevention guidelines reveals the fears allayed by the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA). The NMA described as premature, the easing of the lockdown, even in phases, by the Federal Government. According to the NMA, Nigeria must learn from Ghana, where the same action produced 100 percent increase in infection rate in just a week. President of the Association, Francis Faduyile, stated this sometimes in May in a statement. Nigeria now nears 50,000 in number of cases of the dreaded virus increasing the epidemiological curve towards an upward spike.
