FACT CHECK: ‘Success Emmanuel, one of the suspected Killers of Abuja widow is a gospel artiste’

CLAIM: Mr. Success Emmanuel, one of the suspects arrested in Abuja for luring, kidnapping, and killing an Abuja based widow, Mrs. Janet Nnenna Ogbonnaya is a gospel artiste.

    VERDICT: True

EVIDENCE: 1. A Taekwando head coach, Samson Okorie in a telephone conversation with TNG confirmed that Succes Emmanuel is a Taekwando belt holder and member of his club.

EVIDENCE 2. Photo evidence obtained on Success Emmanuel’s Facebook account in which he displayed Taekwondo skills.

EVIDENCE 3. TNG also obtained the design art of one of the CD covers for a gospel song released by Emmanuel. Another proof is a picture of Mr. Success Emmanuel handling the camera mounted on a tripod.

FULL TEXT: Heated arguments engulfed the social media on the religious status of Success Emmanuel, the youngest among the three siblings arrested in Abuja on the 4th June 2020 for killing a 55-year-old widow, Mrs. Janet Nnenna Ogbonnaya.

Recall that the suspects – Johnson Emmanuel (38yrs), Gideon Emmanuel (31yrs), and Success Emmanuel (27yrs) – were all arrested by the police in their hometown in Imo State where they had taken refuge after committing the crime in order to evade police arrest.

The victim, Mrs. Janet Nnenna Ogbonnaya, a 55-year-old native of Ozuitem in Bende LGA of Abia State, was killed after she visited Johnson in his home (at Wumba District, Lokogoma area of Abuja), according to Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Frank Mba.

Since the story broke, a lot of Nigerians have been posting the suspect’s pictures that depict him as a gospel singer and preacher. The viral image is a combo of two photos: A. the suspect as a Gospel Artist and B. another where he was handcuffed.

The arguments raised intense controversy over Success’s real identity. A lot believed Success Emmanuel is not a Gospel Artist, while others claim he is. This prompted immediate research by the TNG FACT CHECK TEAM, we obtained the underlisted pieces of evidence that shows the real status of the controversial suspect.

Firstly; the Facebook page of Mr. Success Emmanuel had his pictures as a gospel singer with the stage name “KINGSCEA”. TNG FACT CHECK went further to Google search for “KINGSCEA” and it turned out to described KINGSCEA as the stage name belonging to gospel singer and preacher named Success Emmanuel residing in Wumba District, Lokogoma, Abuja, the same address where he had allegedly committed the crime.

Secondly, apart from his profession as a gospel singer and preacher, his Facebook profile which TNG tracked via Google, shows he is also a Taekwando Coach, Mr. Success, a graduate of National Diploma (ND) at the Akannu Biam Federal Polytechnic Unwanna, Ebonyi also represented his alma-mater in Taekwando, at the West African Polytechnic games in 2015 at Accra Polytechnic Ghana.

Thirdly; TNG FACT CHECK also secured the phone number of one Mr. Samson Okorie, a Porthacourt based Taekwando Coach. (The same phone number was also seen on a CD cover posted on Mr Success’s Facebook page).

According to Mr. Okorie, the pictures on Facebook showing Mr Success as Gospel Singer and Taekwando Coach are real.

His words; “…He is my colleague, I am the head coach of the Taekwando group while Mr Success is the one heading Abuja branch… I can confirm he is the one arrested with his two brothers by the police in connection with the widow’s death… I am coming to Abuja to see him…the Facebook picture are real…” Okorie added.

CONCLUSION: All the claimants where all right on social media, Mr. Success Emmanuel arrested alongside his two elder siblings Gideon and Johnson is a Gospel singer.

INEC insist Edo, Ondo guber polls will hold despite Covid-19 threats, issues fresh guidelines

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Wednesday insisted that it will conduct the 2020 governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states as scheduled despite fears seeming threats posed by novel Coronavirus in Nigeria.

National Commissioner and Chairman Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), Festus Okoye, made this known in a virtual quarterly meeting with the media on Wednesday.

According to Mr Okoye, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is going ahead with all scheduled elections despite the COVID-19 pandemic to stave off possible constitutional crisis that could derail the nation’s democracy and electoral process. He stressed that the commission is interested in taking the lead in the process of innovation and creativity in the electoral process rather than throwing in the towel and postpone all elections to an indeterminate period.

In his words, “Throwing in the towel in our constitutional circumstances may do violence to the Constitution and wittingly or unwittingly throw the country into avoidable constitutional crisis.

“The commission is therefore determined to proceed with the two end of tenure governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states and the 10 Senatorial and state assembly elections with cautious optimistic bearing in mind that the health and safety of the people will be crucial determinants of the success or otherwise of the elections.”

“We are mindful of the fact that we are at war with an “unseen enemy. We are aware of the fact that some of our compatriots have lost their lives on account of COVID-19 pandemic. We are aware that so many people are in isolation and quarantine centres. We are aware that some of our people are isolated and quarantined at home.” He added.

On his part INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu reel out a new set of guidelines specially designed to help prevent the spread of the Coronavirus during the polls. “…in tandem with the new health reality, accreditation of media organisations for these elections will be done online through a dedicated portal. You will be fully briefed at this meeting on the new procedure”, the INEC chairman said. The commission, therefore released the procedure for accreditation for media organisations covering the governorship elections include the following:

“Each media organisation will apply and upload the list of its personnel to be accredited and their passport photographs and personal details.

“Accredited journalists must observe all the health protocols issued by the Commission, the health authorities and the various state governments.

“Accredited journalist must also respect the secrecy of the vote, the right of the voter to free choice. Mahmood said

INEC national commissioner in charge of electoral operations, Prof. Okechukwu ibeanu. released fresh guidelines and code of conduct for voting during elections.

Specifically, Prof. ibeanu said that the commission would not tolerate branded face masks, as any one with such would be turned back. He also said that INEC will not provide face masks due to logistical reasons based on cost.

He said that for INEC to provide face masks for over 6.4 million at N100 each would cost the commission over N640 million.

The INEC commissioner said that results would not be transmitted electronically as there is no law yet for it.

Also, he said that the commission had suspended the continuous registration of voters at least for now due to covid -19.

Prof. Ibeanu added that the commission had suspended the continuous voters registration and would collapse some collation centres into one as well as collapsing the registration area centres.

He also said that there may be a reduction of voting points, but said that this may be due to reports in the course of the preparations for the elections.

Prof. Ibeanu, said. “Wearing of face mask at Polling Units and all election locations is mandatory. Please make provision for your own face mask. Face masks must be worn at all times, but an election official may request you to lower your mask for proper identification when necessary and anyone that is symptomatic to covid 19 would be isolated immediately.

“Voting starts by 8.30 am and stops at 2.30 pm.

“There shall be two queues formed at each polling location (Polling Unit or Voting Point). The first queue (the outer queue) will be outside, from which an election official shall bring voters into the voting area in batches. The second queue (the inner queue) will be formed in the voting area.

” By 2.30 pm, an election official shall stand at the end of the outer queue indicating that the queue is closed. Any voter on the outer queue by 2.30 pm shall be allowed to vote.

  • TNG INVESTIGATION: Horrible health care delivery system in Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa as mother of 12 bore twins thrice, quadruplates at home

TNG INVESTIGATION: Horrible health care delivery system in Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa as mother of 12 bore twins thrice, quadruplates at home

…communities in despair, resort to self-help

…abandoned PHC centres now home to reptiles….

    By Emmanuel Bagudu

Some communities in Kaduna, Kano and Jigawa States have thrown up their hands in despair as a result of unattended health needs in their communities. TNG’s correspondant Emmanuel Bagudu who went on an investigative tour in the three States made horrible discoveries. From the use of boats, bicycles to the use of traditional medical practices to access health care, citizens are forced to make do with available options to rescue themselves and their families from any health challenge. “We have lost hundreds of children and as the whether and climate keep changing we are already panicking …we need help….” Ladidi Haruna, a Citzen of Makwalla, a village in Kaduna told TNG. This piece explores the poor health care delivery system in some areas in Northwestern Nigeria and it’s corresponding effects on vulnerable communities with reference to some communities in Kaduna, Kano and Jigawa States.

Visiting Kaduna, Kano and Jigawa States from Abuja was quite adventurous. The over 500km journey was full of shocking revelations. Health centres dysfunctional, residents keep expressing mixed feelings. While some seems relentless in calling for help, others seems despondent and have resort to self-help.

First state to be visited was Kaduna.

Third largest state in population in Nigeria, Kaduna now boost of quite an impressive revenue generation record of over N40billion annually as well as a yearly budget of over N200billion. But this however is not reflecting in some of the areas in the state especially those that requires urgent intervention on healthcare.

Makwalla is a small community of about 800 inhabitants, located on the far-bank of River-Kaduna confluence in Igabi local government area of the State. The major occupation of Makwalla locals is subsistence farming with high fertility rate.

In Makwalla, the reproductive aged women have reportedly been educated about child-spacing (family planning) methods, but they don’t have access to it. They don’t also understand how to make use of what they have as traditional pregnancy spacing. There is no single health facility that can take care of the over 800 persons in the community. This made a lot of persons to fall victims of unattended illhealth.

The latest victim is a 30-year-old mother of 12, Zainab Abu also called “Mama Dozen” for her ability to birth and nuture 12 children all alive. Her husband Kabiru Hassan is a subsistence farmer. Through Zainab, the family has unique records of twins. She had given birth to twins three times after having eight children, lost two, before she eventually gavebirth to the quadruplets.

Like many other women in her category, the idea of going for antenatal care was a mirage. There was never a time she knows how many foetuses she’s carrying until she delivers, sometimes with the help of traditional birth attendants and sometimes, through self-help. She is one of the lucky few to be alive after given birth to a dozen without visiting a hospital.

Many other children who where born either alone or in sets in Makwalla hardly celebrate one year birthday. The mothers, sometimes, lose their babies after going through prolonged child labour.

To Zainab, the absence of a nearby primary healthcare centre or health post frustrated her thought of getting medicare each time she was pregnant. Although Zainab is not the only woman that found herself in this category but her giving birth to quadruplets brought her to the public space. On daily basis Journalists and researchers throng Makwalla in search of Zainab and her likes so as to furnish themselves with facts.

“….The major problem we have here is distance. There is also no safe transport means to go to the hospital inside the town….” Zainab said

Zainab added that she has gone through serious pains and stress while trying to birth her Quadruplates. “ban taba sani irin zafin na ba” meaning “she has never had this pain” she said in Hausa language.

TNG gathered that the closest reliable hospital to Makwalla is faraway across the River-Kaduna which involves using the local commercial canoes to cross the River to get to the hospital or alternatively, motorcycles can be used to go to a nieghbouring communities whose health system are not reliable but better without non.

“….once it is 6:30 pm, the canoe operators are off the river bank. So, any woman on labour at night can only be managed within the village” Zainab said.

For his part, Zainab’s husband, Kabiru Hassan, who confirmed that what his wife narrated is true, expressed his displeasure over government negligence on Makwalla considering it’s location. “If you go to the southern states, you will notice that riverine communities are given serious attention but here in the north it is different…..” Hassan said. He added that his wife has never gone for any medical diagnosis or antenatal since they got married. We have been giving birth at home with or without assistance from traditional birth attendants. “My wife has 12 kids but some have died.” Hassan said.

The District Head of Makwalla who lives on the other side of Makwalla called Kurmi, Mohammadu Bashiru, lamented the plights of reproductive aged women in his community, calling on the authorities concern to build, equip and staff functional Primary Health Care (PHC) Facilities in the area to handle the health needs of the people.

    JIGAWA:

From Kaduna to Jigawa, the story didn’t change. TNG Proceeded to Jigawa State where more shocking revelations emerged.

Jigawa borders the Republic of Niger to the north and the Nigerian states of Yobe to the northeast, Bauchi to the southeast and south, Kano to the southwest, and Katsina to the northwest. The state consists mostly of plains covered by wooded savanna in the south and scrub vegetation in the north. It is drained by the Hadejia River, a seasonal stream that flows northeastward through the state. The state’s major crops include peanuts (groundnuts), sorghum, cotton, cowpeas, millet, and the rice grown in the river valley. The herding of cattle, goats, and sheep is widespread.

Jigawa is a largely rural state with roughly 50% of the population living in poverty (Annual Abstracts of Statistics 2019). In particular, 9.3% are living in extreme poverty and 41.4% are living in moderate poverty. This has not change the attitude of governance in the state as the state still cannot afford health coverage for everyone. TNG touched down Ruru town where the health care delivery system remains the same.

Located in Dutse Local government area, Ruru town is 10.5 km from the state capital Dutse with more than 30, 000 population Ruru has only 1 dilapidated antenatal hospital with no single staff. This forces pregnant women and nursing mothers to treck on feeder roads about 6.5 km weekly for vaccines and antenatal.

Hafsat Umar living in Kudai town told TNG that Kudai hospital is the only nearby hospital for Ruru’s inhabitants to attend every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for weekly return (feedback) and emergency delivery. “You will see pregnant women and nursing mothers from Ruru town in group trecking under the sun or rain in this feeder road to Kudai for vaccines and weekly routine despite them having high ranking politicians, government officials and business men in the state and national levels….” she added.

Mallam Bala, a neighbor to the hospital said Journalists and researchers have been coming to check, and and take photograph of the hospital and promised to take report to the government but yet there has not been any improvement.

TNG ran into a lady of about 19 years with her baby in her hand. “….My name is INDO…I am coming from Ruru going to Kudai… I am trecking because I don’t have money and my husband too is broke, and the vaccine is very important and our antenatal clinic is no longer functioning…. I trecked for 4 hours….”

    KANO:

Second most populous state in Nigeria and most populous state in Northern Nigeria. Kano Population is very significant to the political class considering the key determinant of election results which is numbers.

Over the years, the people of Kano having noticed their advantage of numbers have continued to pride themselves as the most valuable persons in the country hence their motto in Hausa language “Kano ta dabo Timbin Giwa Koda me kazo an fi ka” meaning tranliterarilly “Kano the heritage, the Elephant’s big Stomach, no matter what you arrive here with, we are better than you….” This general pride has sinked into generations in Kano. Politicians are aware of this fact and so they play along with what they feel the people of Kano wants. But this did know show in some areas of health care delivery.

In Gada, the last village in Kano State before one crosses to Jigawa state from kano, there are three communties living their, there major work is fadama farming. They have only one antenatal clinic with 2 staff, they have to reach birnin kudu local government or Dutse general hospital when there are emergencies such as accidents and delivery. The distance between Gada to Birnin kudu is about 20km like wise Dutse the Jigawa state capital another closer city to them.

These three villages according to locals who spoke to TNG jostle for any means of transportation going to either Birnin Kudu of Dutse.

One funny fact is that Gada and it’s surrounding communities are under Kano State but are depending on Birnin Kudu and Dutse, which are towns under Jigawa State, a state far poorer than Kano.

Conclusive Kaduna, Kano and Jigawa remains the gate way to Northwestern Nigeria from any part of the country and while they are battling to secure their terrain from the influx of banditry, it is also very important that the three states take the welfare and health of their citizens into consideration.

  • TNGCIJ INVESTIGATIONS: Zonal Intervention Projects: How lawmakers abandon sites in Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa

….they mounted poles and promised to return in 2 weeks, it’s now 10 years no news….

….I only saw my lawmaker last during campaigns says community leader

…primary, secondary school students sit on barefloor to learn

    By Emmanuel Bagudu

The ZIP is an intervention fund started by the Olusegun Obasanjo administration in 1999.designated for the execution of projects across the 469 constituencies across the country in every budget cycle. A sum of N100 billion is usually appropriated for the ZIP in the annual budget.

Members of the two legislative chambers of the National Assembly are expected to nominate projects to be sited in their constituencies to the tune of the sum allocated to them in the ZIP.

However, recently the utilisation of the ZIP has pitched the parliament against the ICPC, after President Muhammadu Buhari, while speaking at a National Summit on “Diminishing Corruption in the Public Service” , an event organised by the ICPC in collaboration with the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), said one trillion Naira has been spent by the lawmakers on constituency projects in the last 10 years without commensurate results.

The House apparently angered by the president’s allegation vehemently denied such a ridiculous amount was made available for constituency outreach projects. They claimed less than 30percent was released by the executive.

But on ground in three North West states of the federation there was virtually nothing to show for even the 30percent they claimed was released.

Littered across the three states are abandoned zonal intervention projects.

A lot of communities are suffering in Northwestern Nigeria due to negligence on the part of government at both the executive and legislative arm. TNG’s Northern correspondant Emmanuel Bagudu who toured Kaduna, Kano and Jigawa has a lot to share in this piece.

Exactly four years ago, the Federal government through the house of representatives allocated N110 million for water intervention in Kaduna and Kano states. The money was later captured in the 2016/2017 budget.

The water intervention project was the construction of solar powered boreholes in communities in line with the demands of Sustainable Development Goal-SIX (SDG 6).

In Kaduna, Sabon Gida, Gonin Gora, Ungwar Boro, Kudenda and Ungwar Yelwa in Chikun Local Government Area, and Hayin Dogo and Kofar Gaya in Zaria Local government areas were the beneficiaries.

While in Kano, Danjaka in Bumai Kunchi LGA, Gwale and Kano Municipal were beneciaries.

It’s 2020 now and it seems the N110 million was either mismanaged or sqandered by the lawmakers in charge using contractors as fronts.

TNG visited Ugwan boro in Kaduna and Kofar Gaya in Zaria still in Kaduna state and the only water facilities there are those built by the state government. “Governor Nasir Elrufai in 2017 was forced to award a water project contract in the whole of Zaria and environs due to the hardships citizens are facing as a result of absence of potable water” Abdulraman Mohammed a Zaria resident told TNG.

Before going to Zaria, Sabon Tasha in Chukun local government the largest settlement very close to the Kaduna metropolis was visited by TNG. Sabo as it is fondly called is made up of many communities including Ungwa boro, one of the beneficiaries of the water constituency contract. At the moment residents of Agwan boro depend on water vendors who buy and sell to them from private boreholes. One of the residents a restaurant owner who pleaded anonymity told TNG she has heard nothing about constituency projects. The only water project contract she heard of was the ones awarded by the state government.

TNG ran into some activists who also made case for the deplorable state of educational system in the state with reference to Sabo.

Government Day Secondary School Sabon Tasha Kaduna popularly called “Day Sabo” remains in a sorry state. All students in the school sit on barefloor to learn. Same with LEA Primary school Chikaji where students seat on barefloor and teachers use charcoal to teach.

After so many reports and plea from concerned persons to the Kaduna state government, the school is still not a place to learn as students in hundreds seat on bare floor having lessons.

TNG was led by an old student of the school now an activist Victor Bobai who was almost in tears while complaining of government’s negligence of his alma-mata. “A healthy learning environment in schools is only possible when students and teachers are provided with adequate facilities…” Mr Bobai said.

“These are weaker structures and very horrible facilities , students don’t have seats…. This shows deliberate negligence on the part of government…. He added.

“Day Sabo” is one of the oldest secondary schools in the state. Sabon Tasha is also one of the hybrow areas within Kaduna metropolis, it hosts the Federal Polytechnic’s (KADUNA POLY) faculty of Administration as well as the famous Kaduna Oil refinery and of course the NNPC staff quarters. Aside from this, a lot of private sector investments are situated within Sabon Tasha, this makes the existence of such delapidated schools strange.

“I want to use this opportunity to bring to the notice of my friends and well wishers that, GDSS Sabon Tasha in Chikun LGA of Kaduna state, Nigeria is in a pitiable condition and to also use this medium to appeal that attention be paid towards the rehabilitation of this school. The experience of these students here is disheartening because almost all the classrooms are not in good condition for learning of which they (students) feel very uncomfortable in paying good attention to learning. Majority of these students sit on the floor while receiving lectures. Even the staff room and Principal office are not excluded as these rooms are flooded when it rains.” Bobai said.

He extended his plea to his classmates and other old students to intervene in any way they can.

    KANO

A state with 44 local government councils, Kano can boost of having the highest number of Lawmakers in Nigeria. But this is not reflecting in the lives of it’s constituents. The communities visited by TNG also complained of negligence. Gwale one of the beneciaries of the water constituency project now depends on a greenish abandoned dam which was constructed in place of the proposed solar powered borehole.

Another village called Gada was visited by TNG. Gada is the last village in Kano sharing border with Jigawa state. The three communities that makes up Gada Village depend on only one primary school with 3 classes and a nomadic school situated under a tree.

The three communities has only one functional borehole. TNG approached the community leader Malam Musa Sanusi who narrated how policititians mostly lawmakers use to come during campaigns and play over their intelligence. “….You see this Poles? They have been mounted for 10years. The day they brought these poles they told us we will get electricity in two weeks…this is 10 years now noting has happened….our children seat under trees to learn…..” Sanusi said. Asked whether he has contact with his representative at National level, “….the last time we saw him was during campaigns Sanusi said.

    JIGAWA.

Kiyawa local government was the last place TNG visited to track the alleged scam surrounding constituency funds meant for the purchase of Motorcycles for youths. It could be recalled that in late 2017, the sum of N116million was released as constituency funds from the executive. The money was awarded for social interventions contract in Gombe, Benue and Jigawa. Kiyawa LGA in Jigawa was the direct beneficiary. TNG met a couple of youths and motorcycle operators in Kiyawa who narrated their knowledge about the contract. “There was a scam, the money was released but there was a scam….” Isah Bala one of the leaders of Motorcycles operators in Kiyawa told TNG. Bala added that one Hamza Barau was the one given the contract of the purchase of Motorcycles to Kiyawa people but unfortunately he didn’t execute the contract. He said Mr Barau has so far been taken to court.

All these continuous squandering of constituency funds in Nigeria has continued to cause serious pains and affliction for the citizens as seen in Kaduna, Kano and Jigawa. The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), has been engaged in naming and shaming politicians engaged in the act of not executing Constituency projecs, It is hoped that this will encourage the Media, the Human right community as well as the civil society communities to do same.

  • Kaduna health workers dare El-rufai, commence seven-day warning strike

Health sector Unions in Kaduna have ignored the “no work no pay threats” by Governor Nasir Elrufai and began a 7-day warning strike from 12 noon, Friday, May 22, 2020.

A communiqué issued and signed by Dr Danjuma Sule, Dr Emmanuel Joseph, Dr Sayyid Egbunu Mjhammed, Mr Ibrahim Abashe, Pharm. Bagu Great David, Ibrahim Lawal Suleiman, Ayuba Magaji, Nurse Ishaku Yakubu, Dr Stephen Kachi Akau, Dr Jinad Jibril Olawale, Lawal T. B., Enock I. Dodo, William Anthony and Sa’adatu Abdulwahab from MDCAN BDTH, ARD, Kaduna, ARD BDTH, National Association of Pharmaceutical Technologists Nigeria, AHAPN, Kaduna branch, Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria, Kaduna state chapter, NANNM, Kaduna state council, NMA, Kaduna state chapter, Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy, Kaduna state chapter, AMLSN, Kaduna branch, Environmental Health Officers Association of Nigeria, NANNM BDTH and AHAPN BDTH respectively at the end of the joint meeting of Kaduna State Healthcare Workers Unions and Associations said the meeting was called to assess the response of the Kaduna state government to their earlier communication and notice of a 7- days warning strike to press home their demands.

The meeting observed that the Kaduna state government deducted 25% of the salaries from about 11,000 of her Healthcare workers in the midst of COVID 19 ( April and May), stressing that the action was done in violation of section 5 of the Labour Act.

The communiqué noted that healthcare workers feel rejected and unappreciated by the Kaduna state government and are therefore demoralized and unmotivated.

“We also note that there are inaccuracies in the reportage of our challenges and the issues at hand,” the communiqué stressed.

According to the Communique “Kaduna State Government paid between 150,000 to 450,000 naira as Occupational Safety incentives to about 300 selected HCWs and non HCWs working as staff or volunteer in the IDCC and isolation centre or serving in some of the CoViD 19 pillars. Less than 2% of the HCWs in the State benefited from the packages.

“They promised 10 per cent incentives for other HCWs though inadequate are yet to be paid.

Most HCWs that were infected with COVID-19 are from health facilities outside the IDCC and isolation centres and none of them have been paid the purported #100,000 daily for 10 days.

Oil Polluted Ogoniland, Vulnerable to Covid-19 due to prolonged delay in Cleanup Exercise

    By Emmanuel Bagudu, Abuja

Washing hands with contaminated water is a serious set back in the quest to contain the novel Covid-19 Pandemic especially in the oil polluted ogoniland in Nigeria’s southern region.

These and many more issues were the submissions of some stakeholders during a Virtual Conference on Friday tagged “Situation Room for the Review of the Process of the Implementation of UNEP report ” which took place on Zoom Webinar.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) was part of the Webinar meeting which was a multi-stakeholders engagement meant to appraise the progress made by the Hydrocarbon Remediation Project (HYPREP) an agency , under the Federal Ministry of Environment responsible for cleaning the oil polluted ogoniland.

Recall that the HYPREP came into existence after the report by the United Nation’s Environmental Program in 2016 which served as the baseline for the clean up exercise.

Organised by the Kebetkache Women Development and Resource Centre, the Virtual Conference featured discussions on “Role of Women in the cleanup exercise” as well as community response and general overview of the progress made in the cleanup. Very sensitive issues on the discussions was the use of contaminated water and leaving in contaminated environment which the stakeholders say may halt the ongoing fight against the novel Covid-19 since residents depend on contaminated water for regular hand washing. “….The additional issues faced by the Ogoni People are related to the extreme pollution they live with. Covid-19 requires that people wash their hands under running water. This cannot be done with contaminated water. Secondly, the symptoms of the Covid-19 include breathing disease, these are exactly the conditions that people exposed to hydrocarbon pollutions live with….” Nnimo Bassey one of the panelists said during the meeting. The review meeting also raised alarm over a new discovery of pollution located about seven metres under the ground in Eleme Rivers State.

For his part Suanu Baridan, head of Ogoni traditional Council, conflict remains imminent in the cleanup process and so locals must be carried along to avoid rancur.

It was also notted in the meeting that money for the cleanup which is one billion dollars ($1B) is being gathered in the OGONI trust fund. The money which comes in tranches are be contributed by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation(NNPC), which holds 55% of the shares, Total (TEPNG) which holds 10% and ENI oil company 5%. Shell (SPDC’s) contribution will be 30% of the figure. Refineries and other local oil business operatives are expected to also contribute to the fund.

It was also discovered in the meeting tha Goi, a highly oil polluted community in Bayelsa was not captured in the cleanup project.
