Traders said that activities at the market were at low key as stakeholders awaited the outcome of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The Naira has remained stable for about two months due to the sustained interventions by the CBN at the foreign exchange market.

  • EXCLUSIVE: Sighted at Heathrow airport, Gov Al-Makura says, Yes we met with Buhari

Nasarawa state governor, Alhaji Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, sighted at Heathrow airport, this evening has confirmed meeting with recuperating President Muhammadu Buhari in London today.

Governor Al-Makura who was one of the All Progressive Congress, APC, Governors who along with the party chairman, John Oyegun, were said to have met with and had lunch with ailing President Muhammadu Buhari in London, was sighted in London Heathrow airport as he prepared to return back to Nigeria after the visit.

The governor who seemingly had not had a change of dress after his visit with the President was seen still wearing the caftan and exact same cap and the earphone which he had on during the visit.

Yes, we met with President Buhari earlier today”, he told our special correspondent, a Managing Director of a bank who was on the same flight with him.

This is coming even as Femi Adesina put out a statement quoting the Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha that President Muhammadu Buhari was very cheerful and has not lost any bit of his sense of humour.

According to Adesina, “the governor said the party delegation spent more than an hour with President Buhari over lunch, and it was very clear from the discussions that he followed developments at home very closely.

“He said the president was delighted to receive the delegation and asked each governor about affairs in his state. He also asked the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, about the state of the railways.

“When asked to react to all the negative things being said about him, the President just laughed, describing such negative reports as lies. Governor Okorocha said President Buhari was completely unperturbed by the cocktail of lies. He, instead, sent his best wishes to Nigerians.

According to the governor, Nigerians don’t have to worry at all, adding that President Buhari will be back as soon as the doctors give him the green light.

“By our visit to London today, the merchants of lies have been put out of business and Nigerians will not buy the garbage they have been selling. All those who look up to fake news can find better use for their time,” Governor Okorocha noted.

Governors Umaru Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa; Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna; Yahaya Bello of Kogi; and APC National Chairman, Chief John Oyegun, were also in the delegation.”

  • Nigeria will be completely out of recession in 12 months – Buraimo

Sauve and astute investment banker and Pastor, Ade Buraimo, sat with TheNewsGuru.com Publisher, Mideno Bayagbon, in a surprising rainy break over Lagos, and an insightful, reassuring, peep into the economic future of Nigeria, emerged.

ECONOMIC RECESSION ENDS IN 12 MONTHS

Ade Buraimo, Group Managing Director of AlphaMorgan Capital, one of Nigeria’s top investment banks, has predicted that going by current economic scenario today, Nigeria will be completely out of the recession which has held the nation in a vice grip in the last two years, within the next 12 months.

In an exclusive chat with TheNewsGuru.com, the former MD of Guaranty Trust Bank, Sierra Leone, said “with the agility of the president and the acting president, I am sure in the next 12 months the story will change, positively. ”

The Alpha Morgan Capital MD, however, noted that though we can predict the future, looking at certain economic indices, “we have to touch on what has happened: the economy has gone into recession, borrowing has been very difficult: the banks are not lending and inflation is very high, almost 17 percent. Treasury borrowing is almost at 22 percent. Notwithstanding, the new government is trying to put things together, though they lost six months when they started.”

    WHY 12 MONTHS?

Asked to comment on the economic team in government predicting an end to recession in the near future, Mr Buraimo said, “they predicted that we will be out of the recession in 18 months, but I can assure you that with the speed at which they are going, the speed at which the economy is growing; the growing interest and confidence of investors: foreign investors are coming back gradually, and even the local investors are investing now, I am sure within the next 12 months the economy will be completely out of recession.

“The foreign investors are coming back and the interesting things is that we are not losing money. Gradually, as things are settling down, others will follow the few that came back two, three months back.”

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nq8DUsq4fKc

FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT TO TOP $10 BILLION BY DECEMBER

Sounding very optimistic, Mr Buraimo who was also managing director of GTHome before leaving to found Alpha Morgan Capital, enthused that by December, this year, foreign direct investment into the economy will have topped $10 billion.

With that he says, “the dollar to naira exchange rate will improve, unemployment will reduce, factories that are shut down, most of them will begin to come up; crime rate will automatically go down. Honestly, it’s going to be a major breakthrough for Nigeria.”

Asked how the economy can experience the breakthrough he predicts when the entire infrastructure architecture of the country is in a shambles, the highly decorated investment banker argues that “well, infrastructurally we are in trouble. But the truth is, with these inflows and the strategy by the government to raise some infrastructure bonds, and increase their cash flow from tax and taxation, I am sure they will fix most of the infrastructural issues. The roads will begin to get better as we progress. That will actually create employment in the construction industry because the construction sector employ a higher percentage of work force. By the time the federal government begins to pump money into infrastructure, the economy is bound to pick up.”

    WEALTH IS SECURED ACROSS GENERATIONS

The Alpha Morgan MD, as one of the leading investment banking institutions, professionalism, our ability to meet obligations of investors as at when due, and the fact that we run this organisation as a structured environment, we don’t need to wait for anybody to take decision and the returns you expect from your investments, honestly Alpha Morgan is a place to invest your funds. Aside from that our slogan is very simple: we are securing wealth across generations. You are sure of your wealth; you are sure of your money. You can go to bed and sleep while we are working for you.”

    A PASTOR IN INVESTMENT BANKING

Asked what a pastor is doing in financial re-engineering and investment, Mr Buraimo, who is a very senior pastor in the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, “The good thing about being a pastor or working for God in investment banking is that you put decency into what you are doing. You put God into what you are doing and your word is your bond and whatever you say you will deliver, you deliver it. With that honestly the investors can go home and sleep.”

  • Plantain suckers: An easy way to become a multi-millionaire

Plantain suckers: An easy way to become a multi-millionaire

Do you desire to be a millionaire? And you are ready to become one the smart way? Do you desire to be your own boss, working at your own pace while living the good life?

Dr Festus Okubor, immediate past Chief of Staff to ex-Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta state, think you should try planting a 1000 plantain suckers farm and three harvest seasons from now, voila, you are a millionaire.

But you need a few things, the most important of which is your zeal to work hard and make it big. Then you need an equivalent of two acres of land; and finally, you need to plant 1000 suckers of plantain. That is it. It is that simple, if Dr Okubor is to be believed.

According to Dr Okubor, who was also a two-time commissioner in Delta state, the mathematics gained from his personal experience proves his optimism. To him, plantain is a highly profitable crop that can indeed create a second economy, after oil and gas, in Nigeria, and particularly in Edo and Delta states.

He believes that plantain plantation is a veritable avenue to empower our teaming youths who are seeking non-existent white collar jobs. He says instead of wasting time and years in seeking the ever elusive jobs, uncles, brothers, communities and indeed, state governments can use this as an avenue to empower their youths.

In his words, “with a gift of 1000 plantain or banana suckers, you will take a youth permanently out of unemployment and poverty and actually turn him to a rich man in three years; and an employer of labour. Enough of complaining; let’s start doing.”

Speaking further, the former Chief of Staff, said: “Remember the banana republics of yore? To create a plantain and banana economy in Delta and Edo states will virtually take out all the youths from unemployment. I am committed to this and take the first step to instal macro-propagators in my farm. With these, I am in a position to supply all the needed suckers, disease resistant, high yield and short species. We can do it.

“Join me to mobilise the states and agencies and individuals to create the second economy to oil and gas, that is surer to eradicate unemployment, certain to make its farmers rich and catalyse industrialisation,” he noted.

On how just 1000 suckers currently valued at a mere N100,000 can make one rich in three years, Dr Okubor volunteered the following: “with 1000 plants today, you are sure to harvest at least 1000 bunches monthly in 3 years. Ask your agric-economists in your area to confirm or disprove this assertion.”

Breaking this down, he says at four metres pacing, you will need two hectares of land. “I do three metres spacing. Plantain multiplies exponentially. So by harvest, which is ten months, 1000 will give you 4000 suckers. By the second harvest, you will have 16000 and by the third circle, you will have 64,000.

“Nature spaces the emergence of suckers such that after three circles, you have for monthly harvest, the number you started with.”

Speaking on the cost of the suckers, he said they are cheap. “A sucker costs N100 only. A bunch of plantain costs at least N1000 today. There is no back breaking weeding, so the youths can accept it.

With or without fertiliser, it will produce. It is advised to get more land to transfer suckers by the end of the second circle to avoid clustering and ensure good bunches. With diligence, one person can maintain two hectares (actually 1.6 hectares).”

According to Dr Okubor, whose farm, Ewere Farms, is currently mass producing suckers, “psycho-socially, it is also easier to show the youths the money or profits involved and so secure their interest. Equipment for processing to powder or starch is available and not expensive. A bunch of N1000 processed, will yield N6,000 as plantain amala and N10,000 as pharmaceutical grade starch.”

As a mass empowerment programme, he says, “government can clear land enough for 100 persons, for example, 200 hectares and multiples as may be done and empower the young men and women individually with 1000 suckers. Thereafter, they can be formed into cooperatives for ease of access to extension services, marketing and finance for further growth. Give them three years tax exemption but capture them in the tax net by the fourth year.

“As cooperatives, it is easier to get funding for processing plants or attract investors for same. With focus, we can create a solid, second economy in seven years where there will be no youth unemployment and where prosperity would have been democratised,” he enthused jubilantly.

Prisoners to flood: Residents helplessly stranded at Lekki, Oniru, VGC area of Lagos [videos]

Residents helplessly stranded at Lekki, Oniru area of Lagos

The rich, the cliche goes, also cry! The incessant rain that has held Lagos captive for almost a week now has proved that, indeed, the rich truly also face all the vagaries that bedevil even the wretched of the earth. It is no respecter of the high and mighty!

Recall, earlier in the week, neighbours of Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, woke up to find their highbrow Victoria Garden City (VGC) estate in Lagos, has been taken over by a huge body of water. They virtually had to swim their way in and out of their homes.

ALSO READ:Watch cars swim as heavy rainfall floods VGC

Today, it appears residents of VGC are not the only ones who will be needing swimming lessons, Oniru Estate and the Lekki axis too have their own tears to shed. And the tears runs aplenty. All over Lekki phase one and two, and the corresponding estates in Oniru, is a blanket cover of water: they are all drenched in flood. Water has taken over and the proverbial tears is metaphorically flooding the eyelids of residents.

For most, various homes in Lekki, especially the lower floors are flooded. Their sitting rooms have become mini oceans of water; their properties either floating or submerged in rain water.

Their compounds and streets are flooded no go areas. In almost everywhere in Lekki, the middle and upper-class Nigerians are suddenly prisoners. Prisoners to flood. Helpless. They are inconsolable. They are no different from the worst part of Lagos any longer. Flood has become a leveller.

  • Again Adeboye prays against all kidnappers, evil societies and cults

Again Adeboye prays against all kidnappers, evil societies and cults

For the second month running, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, at the church monthly Holy Ghost Service, led the large congregation at the church’s new three by three kilometres auditorium, in praying against all kidnappers and for their total destruction in Nigeria.
While thanking God for answering the prayer of the church after the last Holy Ghost Service where they specifically prayed for the exposure and arrest of all kidnap kingpins, Pastor Adeboye this month led the congregation in praying: “We are not talking of kingpin of kidnappers alone, we are talking about every kidnapper in Nigeria, root them out, small or big in the entire nation, Lord root them out in the month of July. Wherever they maybe, just uproot them out Lord; don’t let anyone of them escape. Its either they repent or root them out.”
It would be recalled that shortly after the church corporately prayed against kidnap kingpins last month, the special unit in the Inspector General’s office, headed by ACP Abba Kyari, made its biggest catch: the arrest of the “brightest and smartest” billionaire kidnap kingpin, Evans, who had a N30m bounty placed on his head by the police.
Nigerians easily remembered the prayer by Pastor Adeboye a few days earlier where he had led the church to specifically call on God, to within seven days, expose and cause the arrest of all kidnap kingpins and their collaborators.
The General Overseer also led the church in committing every evil society or cult, by whatever name they are called, shedding innocent blood of Nigerians, into the hands of God. “Send down your fire and consume them,” the congregants prayed.
Pastor Adeboye then led the church in committing into the hands of God, every person and organisations that are making things difficult for the common man, saying “Father expose them and dislodge them.”
In reacting to some social issues plaguing Nigerians, the RCCG GO led the church in rebuking the spirit of sudden death, infirmities; the spirit called cancer, spirit called hypertension, stroke in the life of Christians.
  • Fast Track operation runs into hitch over alleged extortion by Customs officers

The newly designed 24 hours clearance of consignments under the fast track scheme at the nation’s ports has run into an early hitch over alleged extortion of operators by Customs officers.

This major setbacks at the seaports in Lagos, followed alleged frustration by officers and men of the Nigeria Customs Service on escort rosters.

Operators lament allege extortion by Customs officers over cargo escort from ports

Operators lament that the 24 hours port operations would be impossible to attain if the practice persist stressing the need for customs officials on escort duty to be present for fast track consignments to exit the port timely.

The operators are alleging that customs officials demand monies from shippers and freight agents before attempting to escort consignments out of the ports.

Fast track, otherwise known as customs fast delivery, is the process whereby consignments belonging to multinational companies are allowed to exit the ports without examination until the items get to their warehouses.

The essence of fast track is to avoid congestion at the port and to also aid speedy clearance of goods.

The process also deals with high volume of consignments owned by multinationals and are usually routed on the green lanes at the ports and customs escorts are required to accompany the goods to the required destination.

Confirming the development to our correspondent in Lagos, yesterday, Chief Boniface Okoye, Chairman and Managing Director, Bonntex Logistics Integrated Global Limited, lamented that the attitude of customs officials designated for escort has truncated trade facilitation overtime.

Okoye alleged that the process to assign escort to fast track consignments has become cumbersome leading to extra charges at the expense of the shippers.

According to him, the escort officials determine the exit of the consignments, saying that they (escorts) decide when, and time, to discharge their responsibilities.

Mr Okoye, who is a member of National Council of Managing Director Licensed Customs Agents, (NCMDLCA), called on the Controller General of the service to alleviate the plights of shippers and freight agents, because the delays experienced, lead to additional cost of doing business in Nigerian seaports.

He alleged that the customs collect N1000 per container adding that most consignments under fast track are always in high volumes.

“If you want to clear about 30 containers at a stretch under fast track, the customs will charge N1000 each before they will decide on the date to storm the port”

“The customs are not organise in their operations because as it is, the Post Audit, Federal Operations Units and Customs Intelligent Units (CIU) are not harmonised in their line of duties,” he added.

“We are calling on the Customs Comptroller General to intervene and address this issue once and for all”

The freight agents noted that 24 hours ports operations and that of customs e-clearance operations of goods from the port would be unachievable if its personnel continue to take their responsibilities for granted.

Similarly, an importer who prefer anonymity disclosed that the nonchalant attitude of the customs indirectly affect production of the multinational companies.

According to him, some raw materials stay in the ports for a long time due to the absence of customs officials who should accompanied the consignments to their respective warehouses.

  • Oyo educates residents on benefits of N650 health insurance scheme

Oyo State Government has begun moves to educate residents of the state, especially members of the public and civil servants on the benefits and advantages of the newly introduced N650 monthly health insurance scheme even as it disclosed that pregnant women and children under the ages of five are exempted from paying the stipulated amount.

The sensitization which started with the engagement of senior civil servants led by the Head of Service and was followed by a meeting with the staff of the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism.

Receiving the staff of Oyo State Health Insurance Scheme (OYHIS) and Six Health Maintenance Organisation (HMOs), the state Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr. Toye Arulogun reiterated the government’s commitment to affordable, accessible and quality health care delivery, urging the people of the state to take advantage of the first health insurance scheme by a state government in the country.

Arulogun noted that the health insurance scheme is one among the various health initiatives the government offers the people, adding that the government will not relent in its efforts to ensure that the people of the state enjoy the dividends of democracy.

In his address, the Executive Secretary of OYHIS, Dr Sola Akande said that the Insurance Scheme is the future of the health sector which starts now in the State. He emphasized that the attendant reformation underscores the importance the state government places on the health sector and the well-being of the citizens of the state.

Dr. Akande pointed out that the scheme which will reduce mortality rate among residents of the state as well as give them access to basic health care delivery through easily affordable monetary commitment of N650 naira per month and N7800 per annum.

The Executive Secretary, who stressed that the scheme would outlive many administrations in the state, explained that the insurance scheme comes on three platforms which include Standard, Standard Plus and Standard Peak plans.

According to him, “the Standard plan is the least of the scheme and affordable, while every enrollee can pay for it in two instalments. As much as possible, we want to ensure no one is left out in this bounty which is first of its kind by any state government in the country.”

Dr Akande, who allayed the fears of the general public that the service would be scrapped after the expiry of Sen. Abiola Ajimobi’s administration, said that the Scheme was duly established by the law and is made available to everyone in the State, noting that individuals have a crucial role to play in the scheme by joining hands with government to promote the health sector and prevent untimely death.

He however appealed to civil servants and the general public to believe in the scheme by buying into it as well as supporting it, stressing that the scheme will bring about a paradigm shift in the State health sector in earnest.

  • No plans to defect from APC to contest guber election – Senator Abe

No plans to defect from APC to contest guber election – Senator Abe

Senator Magnus Ngei Abe has vowed not to leave the All Progressive Congress, APC, despite insinuations from some quarters that he intends to achieve his gubernatorial ambition through another party.

Senator Abe who represents Rivers South East Senatorial District, at the National Assembly, affirmed that no matter the perceived challenges that may crop up in furtherance of his willingness to contest the 2019 governorship election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), he will not defect from the party as being rumored by some persons.

“I am the biggest investment in the politics of Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi in Nigeria”

Abe who made this known during his thank you visit to Gokana Local Government Area, as part of his efforts to commend the people of Rivers South East Senatorial District for returning him in the re-run election held on Dec. 10, said he is the biggest investment in the politics of Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi in Nigeria and there is nothing that will make him leave the APC.
The Senate Committee chairman on Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) in reacting to some issues plaguing the party said, one gets to a point in life when what happens to him no longer becomes an issue but at that point, it is what happens around him that becomes more important.
“We are trying to make the party better by supporting our leader, the Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, so that the party can move forward and will not relent in our efforts; and by the grace of the Almighty God that we serve, the right thing will be done.

“Let me use the opportunity of this visit to address some issues in our great party, the APC in Rivers State and to say clearly for the record that there are no members of the party, including myself, that is disputing the leadership of my friend, the Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi. We are not disputing with him who is the leader of the party. He is the leader and will continue to be the leader of our party in Rivers State.”

Speaking further Senator Abe said, some people are saying that his ambition to become governor of Rivers State in 2019 is the problem in the party. While others are claiming that they have asked him (Abe) to wait and build the party but he has refused to wait. Therefore, he is the one scattering the party because of his desire to be governor.

“I stand in front of my people, here, today, and declare that I don’t tell lies. I am not a liar. The story that I am scattering the party in the state because of my governorship ambition is not true. The problem is simple. We have heard some people saying all elected members of the party got their tickets because Amaechi endorsed them, therefore, everyone who has an ambition should wait until he endorses him or her.”
“The arguments some people are putting forward are that any person who would not wait for the leader, (Amaechi), to endorse him or select him, or her, to anoint him, or her, or who is saying something different is a bad person; or, a bad member of the party; the person should be removed, or suspended from the party; or the person should leave the party on his own volition. Some of us, who feel that stopping some persons from aspiring to become what they want to become is an infringement on their fundamental human rights, are saying no.

“Yes. We agree that it was the leader who gave us tickets and that the leader has always pointed to people and such persons have gone to contest elections; but we also know that politics is dynamic; and that our APC offers change. How do we convince the people of Rivers State that we, too, can change?”
“And some people said no! It is not that the leader will not have a say; it is not that the leader will not have a say in the selection of candidates vying for election under the auspices of the party; but some people felt the party should allow interested members and aspirants to make their inputs. And some members turned that position to be a move against the leader of the party. And that anyone who says anything contrary to anything said by the leader of the party is anti-party or worse still, fighting Rotimi Amaechi. For me, I think that position is wrong. It is undemocratic and totally against the change mantra of the APC.”

“I am the biggest investment in the politics of Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi in Nigeria”.

Speaking on the resolve of the people of Ogoni to produce the governor of Rivers State in 2019, having been denied the opportunity in the past 50 years that the state was created, Senator Abe insisted that it was time for the Ogonis to produce the next governor of the state.
“Today, I don’t have to apologise for being an Ogoni son. I love my country, Nigeria. I am a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. I love my country. I support my country, but if I was not from here, Ogoni, I will not be a Nigerian. It has been 50 years since Rivers State was created and nobody of Ogoni extraction has been governor, deputy governor or Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly. And some are saying that it doesn’t matter. I stand here today, to tell Rivers people that it, indeed, matters and we have no apologies to offer to anybody.”

“I hear that the PDP caucus in Ogoni has endorsed Governor Nyesom Wike that is their opinion. I also hear that the APC caucus has said that they have an opinion on the governor’s position, too. But the people of Ogoni also have their opinion and that opinion is that there must be justice in Rivers State.”
“So, today, I want to use this opportunity to thank everybody. I don’t have problem with anybody. And anybody who knows me knows that I have reached a level, and even before I got to this level I could look anyone in the eyes and tell them the truth. At this stage of my life, I do not have to lie to anyone, or my people to achieve anything. Truth must remain the standard by which our actions are judged.”

  • Osinbajo to tax evaders: you have 9 months to regularise or go to jail

Osinbajo to tax evaders: you have 9 months to regularise or go to jail

The federal government has started moves to tighten the noose on tax evaders as Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo has offered them a nine months grace period to regularise their tax status or face criminal prosecution for tax offences.

This move is contained in the Executive Order signed by the Acting President codename: Voluntary Assets and Income Declaration Scheme (VAIDs).

According to Osinbajo, the scheme is especially targeted at taxpayers who have not declared their taxable incomes and assets, as well as those who don’t pay at all, and those who had been underpaying or under remitting.

The scheme which would become operational from July 1, 2017 to March 31, 2018 will cover all federal and state taxes such as companies’ income tax, personal income tax, petroleum profit tax, capital gains tax, stamp duties and tertiary education tax.

Speaking at the occasion, the Acting President said “the executive order which I will sign into law today offers a once in a life time opportunity to those in default to regularise their tax affairs.

“In exchange for full and honest declaration, tax evaders will receive immunity from prosecution, forgiveness of penalty and interest that is due on unpaid taxes.

“They will also get the full assurance that all information provided will remain confidential.

“In addition, participants in the scheme will not be selected for audit investigation for the period.

“We understand that some tax payers may have problems raising cash and for that reason, we have built in a system that will allow those owing to pay over a period of time.’’

According to the acting president, this is subject to conditions.

    http://thenewsguru.ng/breaking-osinbajo-signs-executive-order-asset-declaration/

Osinbajo said that those who fail to take advantage of the nine months grace period will face criminal investigation, and if found guilty, may face up to five-years jail term.

He said that the government would immediately commence a nationwide sensitisation of Nigerians on the scheme and tax in general to ensure compliance.

“To this end, we have agreed that every Thursday starting from today, and for the next one year will be declared Tax Thursday.

“We expect the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and every state government to organise sensitisation events that would raise awareness of the tax system to ensure massive enrolment of new tax payers.

“We must enroll at least 4 million tax payers and increase the level of payment among the 14 million already registered tax payers.

“We expect that all state governors will personally lead this initiative and support the work of the 7,500 community tax liaison officers that would be employed shortly.’’

The acting president said that a high level team working with the Federal Ministry of Finance was set up 15 months ago to research on tax evasion and illicit financial flows.

He said the report of the team, which was tagged “Light House Project” searched various data bases such as banks, Corporate Affairs Commission, vehicle registration numbers and immigration to fish out tax evaders.

On the international front, Osinbajo said; “Nigeria is now a party to the automatic exchange of information which comes into effect in January, 2018’’.

“This means that Nigeria will automatically have all the information to successfully pursue tax evaders across the world.

“Specifically, we will have information on beneficial owners of assets held abroad, including those in tax havens,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, said that with the scheme, Nigeria hopes to increase tax to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country from six per cent to 30 per cent.

“If we pass this test, the future of Nigeria is assured,” she said.

In his remarks, Sen. John Enoh of Cross River Central, who represented the President of the Senate, assured of legislative backing to the scheme.

He said the senate would pass whatever legislation needed to improve tax compliance in the country.

Similarly, the Chairman of Nigeria Governors Forum, Mr Abudulaziz Yari pledged the state governments’ support and commitment toward the new initiative.

Yari, who is also the Governor of Samara, said that state governments would be the biggest beneficiary of revenues derived from the scheme as they would give the FIRS necessary support.

A recent report of the Joint Tax Board showed that only 14 million people out of the estimated 69.9 million Nigerians, who are economically active, are paying taxes.

Accordingly, 96 per cent of the 14 million have their taxes deducted at source; this shows that they are government workers.

Also, only 214 Nigerians pay taxes of about N20 million annually and about 900 Nigerians pay N10 million as tax every year.
