Daddy Showkey slams Niger governor over clamp down on dreadlocks

Nigerian singer Daddy Showkey has slammed cUmar Bago following his directive to security operatives in the state to arrest individuals with dreadlocks.

Sharing an audio recording of the directive in a post on his Instagram page, the singer criticized the governor, saying he should start by cutting his own beard before issuing such an order.

He captioned the audio, “Mohammed Umar Dada be your problem? I dey come to Minna but now that you have asked your security agents to cut off dreadlocks, so hold your state but make you cut your beer beer.”

This comes after the governor reportedly instructed security personnel across the state to cut off the dreadlocks of people living in Minna and impose fines on them.

However, clarifying the order on Wednesday, Governor Bago said the directive is targeted only at individuals involved in cult-related activities.

Daddy Showkey emerged as a prominent figure in the Nigerian music scene during the late 1990s, pioneering a unique style known as “Galala” or “Ghetto Dance.”

This genre, characterized by a blend of reggae, Afrobeat, and street rhythms, resonated deeply with the masses. Unlike many contemporaries who adopted Jamaican patois, he chose to sing in Nigerian Pidgin English, making his music more accessible to local audiences
