Nigerian recording artist, Adekunle Gold in commemoration of the 2025 World Sickle Cell Day, launched a free health insurance initiative for 1,000 individuals living with sickle cell disease.
The singer unveiled the project, called 5 Star Care on Thursday, in partnership with the Lagos State Ministry of Health, the Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA), and the Sickle Cell Foundation Nigeria.
Announcing the initiatiive, Adekunle Gold via his Instagram page, shared a video, captioning the post: “Today is World Sickle Cell Day.And today, I’m proud to announce something that’s deeply personal to me.
“5 Star Care isn’t just an initiative, it’s a promise. A promise to make sure that sickle cell warriors are seen, heard, and cared for. We’re starting small by providing free health insurance to 1,000 people living with sickle cell in Lagos State. But this is only the beginning.”
The health insurance scheme covers routine care, emergency treatment, and specialist consultations, providing beneficiaries access to comprehensive healthcare services through LASHMA’s platform.
Speaking further about the motivation behind the project, the 37-year-old, who has publicly shared his personal experience with sickle cell, said:
“5 Star Care isn’t just an initiative, it’s a promise. A promise to stand by our warriors, to fight alongside them, and to ensure they have access to the care and support they need.”
“We’re starting small by providing free health insurance to 1,000 people living with sickle cell in Lagos State. But this is only the beginning. Our goal is to reach as many warriors as possible, across the country and beyond.”
