Armed assailants on Saturday ambushed travelers at a police checkpoint in Legbeka Community, Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The attack which resulted in two fatalities and the abduction of five individuals, including a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member occurred along the Akure-Benin highway shortly after police officers had vacated their post.
The driver of the commercial bus and a female passenger were killed during the attack, according to an eyewitness.
An eyewitness recounted, “The criminals were positioned at the police checkpoint. The driver mistook them for officers. When he attempted to reverse, they opened fire, shooting him in the head along with a passenger.”
The vehicle was reportedly traveling from Anambra State to Owo and Akure, the state capital.
Confirming the incident, spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, SP Fumilayo Odunlami-Omisanyan, said that officers have been deployed to comb surrounding forest in an effort to secure the release of the abducted victims.
