The laboratory scientist urged people to desist from unprotected sex and sharing of sharp objects such as razor blades, syringes, clippers, pins and nail cutters.

“Since it is better to prevent this disease without any pain, I think we should go back to the basics of prevention and enlightenment campaign in churches, schools, market, motor parks etc,’’ Nwekpe said.

He advised pregnant women to always go for HIV test while attending antenatal clinic in order to ascertain their status.

“This will prevent the child in the womb from contracting the disease from the mother,’’ scientist said.

He also advised medical practitioners attending to pregnant women to always ensure that delivery rooms and equipment were kept safe.

According to him, most private hospitals in the country had no drugs for treating HIV/AIDS while government hospitals with similar facilities could run out of the drugs.
