Tragedy struck on Saturday in Abraka, Delta State, when a pregnant woman was reportedly shot dead during a chase involving soldiers and suspected internet fraudsters, popularly known as Yahoo boys.
Eyewitnesses said the soldiers opened fire while pursuing the suspects, and a stray bullet hit the pregnant woman, who was on her way to the market. Panic gripped the area as residents fled for safety.
The incident sparked outrage among residents, who condemned the military’s reckless use of firearms in a crowded place.
As of press time, neither the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) nor the Nigerian Army had issued an official statement regarding the incident.
The Delta Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, could not be reached for comments. His lines were unavailable.
