Chinese Embassy reacts to telecoms frauds cases involving citizens in Nigeria

The Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Nigeria has issued a formal statement following reports that some Chinese nationals were recently prosecuted by Nigerian authorities in connection with telecommunications and online fraud cases.

Acknowledging the developments, the Embassy confirmed that several individuals of Chinese origin were among a larger group arrested as part of Nigeria’s intensified crackdown on cybercrime over the past year.

The Embassy emphasised that Telecommunications and online fraud are global concerns that demand collective international efforts.

Reiterating China’s longstanding opposition to such criminal activities, the Embassy reiterated that the Chinese government enforces strict legal compliance among its citizens abroad. The 2022 Anti-Telecommunications and Online Fraud Law was cited as a cornerstone of China’s zero-tolerance stance, underscoring a firm commitment to cracking down on cross-border illicit activities.

The statement reads: “The Chinese government maintains an unwavering stance against telecommunications and online fraud, and any form of cross-border illegal activities.

This position is reinforced through stricter conduct regulations for citizens abroad and dedicated legislation efforts. The government mandates Chinese nationals overseas to strictly comply with local laws and regulations and abstain from illicit activities. China’s Anti-Telecommunications and Online Fraud Law, released in 2022, also demonstrates our zero-tolerance policy and resolute commitment to combating such crimes”.

While reiterating China’s full support for Nigeria’s efforts in combating cyber and telecom fraud, the Embassy urged Nigerian authorities to ensure that the rights of Chinese citizens are respected in accordance with Nigerian law.

The statement also called for deeper bilateral cooperation, proposing joint operations between Chinese and Nigerian enforcement agencies to tackle transnational crimes such as online scams and illegal gambling. Such initiatives, the Embassy suggested, would not only enhance cybersecurity but also bolster the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations.
