The Delta State command has announced that it is launching disciplinary action against a group of police officers who was caught on camera counting bundles of cash inside a patrol van marked area command, Asaba.
In the video, which quickly went viral on social media, captured the officers handling large sums of money from inside a stationary police vehicle.
The footage sparked public outrage and raised suspicions that the cash may have been obtained through extortion.
In response to the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Command, Bright Edafe, announced on Tuesday, August 26, that the officers had been identified, tracked, and taken into custody.
According to Edafe, the officers were immediately summoned to appear before the Commissioner of Police after the video was brought to the Command’s attention.
“They appeared before the Commissioner of Police today,” Edafe stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
He further revealed that two senior officers involved in the incident have already been issued formal queries, while two inspectors have been detained pending disciplinary action.
“The four personnel, two of whom are senior officers, have been queried while the two inspectors are currently in detention and awaiting an orderly room trial,” he added.
