Suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Abba Kyari was received with warm welcome by his family members after he was released from detention.
In the photos that surfaced on social media, Kyari is seen in the company of his family members, with a design on the wall that reads, “Welcome back.”
TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reported that Kyari was indicted by the United States’ Federal Bureau of investigation in the case of convicted internet fraudster Ramon Abbas aka Hushpuppi.
Months after, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) detained and arrested the police officer alongside four members of the Police Intelligence Response Team, for the alleged involvement with an international drug cartel.
Two suspected drug traffickers, Chibunna Umeibe and Emeka Ezenwanne, were also apprehended at Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu.
Kyari was arraigned on March 7, 2022.
While Kyari and the IRT members pleaded not guilty, Umeibe and Ezenwanne pleaded guilty and were convicted.
However, despite numerous applications, Kyari’s requests for bail were consistently denied until a recent ruling by a Federal High Court in Abuja.
In May 22nd, Judge Emeka Nwite granted Kyari bail to allow him to complete the burial ceremonies for his late mother, Yachilla Kyari, who passed away on May 5.
As part of his bail conditions, Kyari is required to deposit his travel passport with the court and shall always report to any formation of the NDLEA nearest to him within the period the bail was granted for.
Kyari’s primary bail application hearing for drug trafficking charges is scheduled for May 31, 2024.
In a statement, the spokesman of the Nigerian Correctional Service for the Federal Capital Territory Command, Adamu Duza, told journalists on Friday evening, that Kyari fulfilled his bail requirements and was set free.
