Former chairman of the Ebonyi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and governorship aspirant, Associate Professor Augustine Nwazunku has passed away.
TheNewsGuru reports that Nwazunku, who contested the party’s governorship ticket ahead of the 2023 general elections, died at age 58.
Until his death, he was a Consultant and Associate Professor of Environmental Health at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State.
The PDP Deputy Governorship Candidate in the 2023 elections, Paulinus Igwe Nwagu, confirmed the development, with a statement issued on behalf of the party.
“We have again lost one of us, a leader and dependable member and former Caretaker Chairman of our party in Ebonyi State — Associate Professor Augustine Nwazunku,” Nwagu stated.
The announcement was made in consultation with the party’s 2023 gubernatorial candidate, Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, and other stakeholders.
In honour of the late party stalwart, the PDP has suspended all meetings and political engagements originally scheduled for Saturday, June 28, 2025.
“All meetings and activities slated for Saturday have been suspended,” the statement added, urging members to assemble at Aristocrat Hotel along Ezza Road for onward movement to visit Nwazunku’s family.
The late professor was widely respected for his dual contributions to politics and academia, serving both as a lecturer and political mobiliser in Ebonyi State.
