The National Youth Leader of the Labour Party, LP, Anslem Eragbe, has been suspended by the leadership of the party over allegations bordering on forgery, the opening of an illegal donation website and acts of insubordination.
Eragbe’s suspension was contained in a letter issued in Abuja by the National Secretary, Umar Ibrahim, on Friday.
According to the letter, the suspended National Youth Leader would be relieved of the party’s activities for six months.
It reads: “You may wish to recall that on the 14th of October, 2022. The National Working Committee of the party met and has among other matters deliberated on the allegations of misconduct labelled against you as the National Youth Leader of the Labour Party. A disciplinary committee was constituted to look into your matter and report to the National Chairman.
“In compliance with the party’s constitution, as Amended, (2019) and the committee’s recommendations, you are hereby suspended from your duties as the National Youth Leader of the Labour Party for a period of 6 (six) months, with effect from 18th October 2022. The relevant organs of the party will within the period, meet to ratify the full recommendations of the disciplinary committee.
TheNewsGuru.com reports that Labour Party is a social democratic political party in Nigeria. The party was created in 2002 and was previously known as the Party for Social Democracy (PSD) before changing to its current name the following year.
Built on the ideology of social democracy, the party aims to promote and defend social democratic principles and ideals for the purpose of achieving social justice, progress and unity.
On 27 May 2022, the party’s membership and support increased drastically as the former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, joined the party shortly after he quit the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in a bid to run for the 2023 Nigerian presidential election.
The party was formed in 2002 as the Party for Social Democracy. Its name was officially changed to the Labour Party after the 2003 general election.
Olusegun Mimiko, ran successfully as governor of Ondo State under the banner of the Labour Party for a period of two terms (2009- 2017), only to return to the PDP in 2021.
