Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, on Wednesday, pledged to provide immediate support to the victims of the fire outbreak at Alesinloye Market in Ibadan.
During an on-the-spot assessment of the market, Gov. Makinde stated that the promised support would be actualized upon the government’s receipt of a full report on the incident.
The fire, which commenced at approximately 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, resulted in the destruction of shops and goods valued at millions of naira.
Gov. Seyi Makinde, who was represented by his deputy, Mr. Bayo Lawal, expressed his condolences to the traders who suffered property losses as a result of the fire outbreak.
“As a government, we will do the needful in terms of immediate support through the Oyo State Emergency Management Agency (OYSEMA).
“We will also work with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) as well as public-spirited people to give immediate support to the victims of this incident,” he said.
Gov. Makinde directed the Ibadan South-West Local Government and the Local Council Development Area (LCDA) to implement adequate security measures at the Alesinloye Market.
He also instructed the council authorities to prepare a comprehensive report detailing the cause of the fire, and further called upon the market leaders to provide an enumeration of the affected shops.
He expressed his deep sorrow, stating, ‘This is a big and popular market. It is so painful. It is our prayer that such will not happen again. This fire incident is sad because this market has been in existence for quite some time.’
