Indian authorities have arrested Nigerian former footballer, a Jones Michael, 32 for possession of methamphetamine worth ₹15 lakh (about ₦27.9 million).
TheNewsGuru reports that the arrest took place last Saturday near the Vijayamangalam toll gate in Erode, Tamil Nadu, following a tip-off to the Prohibition Enforcement Wing led by Inspector Sivahami Rani.
Further investigations showed that Michael was residing in India without valid immigration papers. His passport expired in 2023, raising suspicions that he may have entered the country illegally, possibly by sea.
“His passport had expired in 2023, and it is likely that he illegally entered the country by sea,” Rani said.
Micheal is currently facing charges under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and the Foreigners Act, and is currently held in judicial custody at Coimbatore Central Prison.
Additionally, the police detained Melvin, a 49-year-old resident of Perundurai, for providing accommodation to the Nigerian suspect without properly verifying his identity or legal status.
