Obasa: 7 important things you must know about Lagos first female speaker, Meranda

Hon. Mojisola Metanda was sworn in on Monday as the new Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly following the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa.

TheNewsGuru reports that Obasa was replaced by his deputy, Meranda, who represents Apapa Constituency 1, over allegations of corruption, gross misconduct and abuse of office.

Meranda took her oath of office immediately after the assembly’s decision, pledging to lead with integrity and prioritise the legislative duties of the house.

Here are facts about the new female Speaker.

1. , Meranda was born on August 16, 1980 into the family of late Ojora of Lagos, T. A Lawal Akapo and Princess M. A. Lawal-Akapo of the royal families of Ojora, Aromire, Onitana, Oloto, and Oniru.

2. She attended the Lagos Anglican Girls Grammar School (1992-1996) and Ansar-Ud-Deen Secondary School (1996 -1998). She served as the library prefect and secretary of the press club of her secondary school.

3. Her late father, T. A Lawal Akapo was a legislator at the local level before becoming the Ojora of Lagos. Her brother is also the Oniru of Iru land, Oba AbdulWasiu Omogbolahan Lawal.

4. In 2005,  Meranda obtained and advanced certificate in software development.

5. She attended the Lagos State University, graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Public Administration in 2013.

6. In 2015, she was elected as a member of the House of Assembly.

7. In 2023, She was elected the Deputy Speaker in 2023, after serving as the Chief Whip of the ninth House of Assembly.
