The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Mudasiru Obasa, has pulled out his son, Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, from the race for Chairman of Agege Local Government, following a reported directive from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu urging fair and open contests within the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Obasa delivered the news to party leaders upon returning from a meeting with the president in Abuja.
Sources within the presidency confirmed that Tinubu instructed that all APC aspirants be given equal opportunity, warning that candidate imposition could fracture party unity and harm grassroots support.
In response, Speaker Obasa urged those who had previously stepped down for his son to resume campaigning and collect nomination forms ahead of the APC primaries set for July 12, 2025.
Abdul-Ganiyu’s absence from the recent APC screening exercise in Ikeja cemented his withdrawal, surprising supporters who had begun preparing for his campaign.
A local APC chieftain praised the move, calling it a bold step that rekindled faith in the party’s internal democracy. “This unexpected decision shows respect for the will of the people,” he said.
