How Guardian Newspaper falsely reported my death in 2015 – Rtd Justice Obayomi

Seven years after his horrific experience at the hands of kidnappers in Adavi. Kogi State, just retired Justice Samuel Obayomi has recalled the Guardian report that put his wife and family in emotional distress.

The retired High Court Judge said but for the strong faith and conviction that his family had, they would have given up on him even before they became certain of his true situation.

He said, “That report almost caused them to give up on me even as some of them believed what was written on Guardian Newspaper and were already silently mourning ‘my passing.’

“I was shot on my right elbow and I bled for about three days without any medical attention. I was kept in a cave for 34 full days and was subjected to the most inhuman treatment. My experience was horrible.”

Recounting what actually happened that day, Justice Obayomi said, “I went to work at about 8:45 am because it takes less than ten minute to drive from my Residence to the Court. On my way, I sighted four men in mufti carrying AK 47 Rifles. They were not masked and as such I did not suspect that they were out for me.”

“They started getting close and closer trying to see my plate number and we had to stop as they were standing in front of my car. At this point, my Police Orderly CPL. Musa Obanyi was neatly dressed as usual came out to find out what the matter was.

“It was when he was immediately gunned down on the spot that I knew what it was a serious situation we were in. But before I could react, they had dragged out my driver and taken over the car with two of them sifting with me at the back seat and covered my face and bent my neck down. So, I was kidnapped that early morning within the town.

“I am aware that so many people have pirated versions of my encounters, but I am the only authentic authority on the incident with a copyright of what happened. It was on the 28h day of June, 2015 that I was released from the den of the kidnappers after the State Government had satisfied their demands.”

Rtd Justice Obayomi who also shared his other near – death experience, recalled that he had esrlier escaped death by the whiskers in February of that year.

“A petrol tanker coming from Kaduna and going to Warri swerved from its lane and took on my car. The last thing I heard was a loud bang. I only opened my eyes to see myself on a hospital bed.”

“But to the glory of God, my driver and myself were saved from untimely death; though I sustained a wrist and Knee fracture on my right hand and knee. I spent about three months at home after being operated upon and discharged from the hospital,” he stated.
