The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has assured that Corps members who recently completed their national service will receive the arrears of their N77,000 allowance.
The Director-General of NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, gave this assurance during the Batch A 2025 pre-mobilization workshop for heads of Corps-producing institutions and other stakeholders in Abuja yesterday.
The government began disbursing the N77,000 allowance to Corps members last month, following President Bola Tinubu’s signing of the minimum wage bill into law, eight months ago.
Speaking with reporters at the event, the DG emphasized that the government is committed to fulfilling its promise and that the payment of arrears would be made as soon as funds are released. He further assured that even Corps members who have already passed out would receive their arrears. “Once we receive the funds, we will credit them. We have their bank details, and Nigerians need not worry because the government is responsive to their needs,” Nafiu said.
Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, also spoke on the need for reforms within the NYSC to align with the current administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He highlighted that the NYSC scheme, created in 1973, must evolve to meet the demands of modern Nigeria. “We must reform the scheme to address how it prepares graduates for the job market,” he said, calling for a collaborative effort to create an adaptive and inclusive NYSC that serves future generations.
Meanwhile, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, assured the NYSC of full support throughout the service year. Represented by the Mandate Secretary for Youth and Sports in the FCT Administration, Abdullahi Suleiman, Wike confirmed that the FCT administration would continue to collaborate with the NYSC to achieve its objectives.
