The Oyo State Executive Council has approved a ₦4.5 billion relief package for victims and families affected by the tragic explosion that occurred on January 16, 2024, in Bodija, Ibadan.
Announcing the decision, Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, noted that the new allocation builds on more than ₦200 million already spent on emergency interventions, including temporary shelter, medical care, food, and security.
The council also endorsed a recommendation by a ten-member committee to revoke the titles of two adjoining properties on Adeyi Avenue—the location of the blast. The site will be repurposed as a memorial park in tribute to those who lost their lives.
Oyelade dismissed misinformation surrounding the government’s response, calling it “unfair and misleading,” and reaffirmed the state’s commitment to justice and public welfare.
He added that the Ministry of Justice will continue legal proceedings against suspects already charged and is collaborating with security agencies to track down additional individuals linked to the incident.
The explosion, which was triggered by illegally stored explosives, claimed several lives, destroyed numerous homes, and caused extensive damage across the Bodija area.
