PDP breaks APC’s clean sweep, clinch councillorship seat in Yaba

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) achieved a surprising win during the Lagos State Local Government elections, securing a single councillorship seat out of the 376 available across the state.

This breakthrough occurred in Ward D of the Yaba Local Council Development Area (LCDA), where Babatunde Dosunmu, a former member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), defeated the APC candidate to claim victory

Dosunmu, who recently defected from the APC to the PDP in the lead-up to the elections, delivered what many political observers have called a symbolic blow to the ruling party’s dominance in Lagos.

His defection, backed by strategic grassroots mobilisation, proved decisive in the tightly contested ward.

According to Vanguard, the Yaba area experienced minor clashes between supporters of both parties during Saturday’s polls, resulting in a brief disruption. However, the Lagos State Police Command quickly intervened, restoring calm and allowing voting to proceed.

The situation was tense but manageable, thanks to the swift response of security operatives.

Though the APC, which is the ruling party in the state, swept all 20 chairmanship seats and 375 of the 376 councillorship positions, PDP’s win in Yaba has injected fresh hope into opposition ranks.

Despite over seven million registered voters, the exercise witnessed low voter turnout in many areas, although LASIEC insisted turnout might have been underestimated due to the fast voting process.
