Police arrest woman, lover for allegedly burying their newborn baby alive inside toilet

The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old woman, Balaraba Shehu, for allegedly conspiring with her lover to bury their baby inside a toilet after delivery.

The spokesperson of the command, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday, December 3, 2022.

He said the incident happened on December 02, at about 2350hrs, in Tsurma village, Kiyawa Local Government Area of the state.

Shiisu said after the police received the report, a team of Policemen was mobilized and proceeded to the scene of the crime.

“On receipt of the report, a team of policemen mobilized and proceeded to the scene of the crime. On arrival, detectives exhumed the newborn baby from the toilet where it was buried by the suspected mother. The suspect was arrested and is now in police custody,” he stated.

He added that the baby was rushed to the General Hospital Dutse, and certified dead by a medical doctor.

The PPRO said a preliminary investigation led to the arrest of one Amadu Sale, alias Dan kwairo, aged 25 of Akar village in Kiyawa LGA.

According to him, Amadu was alleged to be responsible for the unwanted pregnancy and conspired with Balaraba to bury the baby after delivery.

The Commissioner of Police, Jigawa State Police Command, CP Emmanuel Ekot Effiom, who is known for his thoroughness, has directed that the case be transferred to SCID Dutse, for discreet investigation.

The suspects would be charged to court upon completion of the investigation.

He took over from CP Aliyu Sale Tafida following his retirement from service.

The new Commissioner of Police, Effiom was born on 3rd March 1964, in Nko Yakurr LGA of Cross River State.

He holds a Bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Port-Harcourt in 1986.

CP Effiom was enlisted in the Nigeria Police Force as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police (C/ASP) on the 3rd of March, 1990.

He has served in administrative, investigative, and operational capacities within the State Commands, Zonal Commands, Formations, and the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

Before his posting to Jigawa State Police Command, he was the Deputy Commandant, Police Academy Wudil Kano.

The CP has several certificates in Public Relations, Management and Strategic Security Courses, among others.
