Protest: Saraki, Dogara direct NASS Management to resolve issues with Staff before Friday



President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki and Speaker of the House ofRepresentives, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, have directed the NationalAssembly Management Committee headed by the Clerk, Alhaji SaniOmolori, to resolve all issues raised by protesting members of staffand report back to them by Friday.

Ina statement in Abuja,  Special Adviser (Media and Publicity) tothe President of the Senate, Yusuph Olaniyonu, stated that at ameeting attended by the National Assembly’s Management and membersof staff under the umbrella of the Parliamentary Staff Association ofNigeria (PASAN), the Senate President and the Speaker who addressedthe meeting on behalf of the leadership of both chambers, stated thatit was important for the workers to be well motivated and theirdemands properly addressed in order to create a conducive atmospherefor the legislature to perform its duties. 


TheSenate President and Speaker noted that the demands of the workersare part of the responsibilities of the National Assembly’sManagement and that the grievances of the workers should not beallowed to linger.

“Theleadership of the National Assembly made it clear to the staff thatthe issues raised by them were previously unknown to the legislatorsand that even if they were known to the Senate President and theSpeaker, the leadership could do little to address them because theyfall under the purview of the NASS’s Management. They addedthat the constitution of the National Assembly Service Commissionwhich the workers demanded will be made before Friday. 

“Theworkers demanded for the implementation of the CONLESS system in thepayment of their salaries and allowances, approval of new conditionof service for the workers, among other issues. However, Dr. Sarakiand Rt. Hon. Dogara, as well as their colleagues also reassured theworkers that they will personally supervise how the management willeventually resolve the issues and ensure that the workers are notshortchanged”, Olaniyonu stated.
