Sad as 19-year-old student commits suicide over poor JAMB score

A 19-year-old girl Opesusi Faith Timilehin has ended her own life after ingesting a rodenticide known as ‘Push Out’ following the release of her Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB exam results.

The heartbreaking incident occurred in Odogunyan, Ikorodu, Lagos State, where Faith resided with her sister.

Report indicated that the deceased scored 190 in her second attempt at the exam—an outcome she believed was lower than her 2024 result, leaving her devastated.

Faith was thereafter rushed to a hospital with in the vicinity where she lived but sadly was confirmed dead on arrival.

Tragically, just hours after her passing, a university admission message reportedly arrived in her email.

According to JAMB’s official statement released on May 12, over 1.5 million candidates scored below the 200 benchmark typically considered for university admission.

The incident sparked widespread reactions from Nigerians, many of whom criticized the overall performance as poor, pointing out that despite the official cut-off mark of 140, most universities still demand scores above 200.

Ironically, JAMB has now admitted to a technical error that compromised the integrity of the results from the exam in 157 centres across the country.

Ishaq Oloyede, JAMB registrar, during a press conference on Wednesday broke into tears as he apologised for the errors in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.

“I apologise for the trauma caused the candidates,” Oloyede said tearfully.

He said the results of over 387,000 candidates were affected.

“What should have been a moment of joy has changed due to one or two errors,” Oloyede said.

Faith’s heartbreaking story has reignited discussions around the intense pressure placed on Nigerian students and raised concerns about the transparency of examination results.
