Gov. Aminu Tambuwal and the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III on Sunday inaugurated a 12-bed clinic built by former students of the Sultan Abubakar College, Sokoto.
The health facility was built for the college at the cost of more than N19 million.
The inauguration ceremony was organised to mark the 50th Anniversary of the institution.
Speaking at the event, Sultan Abubakar III commended the old boys association for the gesture.
“I will also continue to personally pay for the services of a Nurse at the clinic until the end of my life.
“I am also urging the State Government and Sokoto South Local Government to post a medical Doctor and additional Nurses to the clinic.
“In the same vein, I will personally assist in the rehabilitation of some structures in the college like the staff common rooms and assembly hall,” he said.
According to him, providing youths with qualitative education is vital to curbing drug abuse, restiveness and other crimes.
However, the Sultan commended the state government for according education a top priority, especially the declaration of the state of emergency on the sector.
Gov. Aminu Tambuwal, represented by his Deputy, Alhaji Ahmed Aliyu, said that the state government had commenced the total rehabilitation of the college.
Tambuwal also promised to continue to promulgate and religiously implement policies and programmes to restore the lost glory of the education sector.
“’Education is the only veritable tool of national development and we will never waver in taking the sector to greater heights.”
The governor also commended the Sultan of Sokoto for his relentless efforts to develop the sector, especially bolstering girl-child education.
Alhaji Aliyu Lawal, the National Chairman of the association, and its Sokoto State chapter chairman, Alhaji Almustapha Sahabi, pledged to continue to assist in developing their alma mater.
The Principal of the college, Alhaji Almustapha Abubakar, said that the clinic would greatly help to provide quality healthcare services to its community and neighbours.
The highlight of the event was the conferment of merit awards on some distinguished personalities including Tambuwal and Sultan Abubakar III.
