The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has issued a directive prohibiting final-year students from participating in the popular “signing off” celebrations usually carried out after their examinations.
TheNewsGuru.com(TNG) reports that the school in a statement on Tuesday explained that the yearly ritual often leads to chaos, violence, and disruption of normal academic activities within the campus.
The management also raised concerns about the presence of outsiders who usually join the celebrations, saying their actions pose risks to the safety of students and staff.
The school further stressed that any student caught engaging in the activity would face strict disciplinary action, including possible suspension, while outsiders who attempt to participate may be arrested and prosecuted for breaching peace on campus.
The statement read in part: “This decision responds to recurring incidents of chaos, violence, and disruption associated with these events.
“Furthermore, the presence of unauthorised individuals on campus poses a threat to the safety and security of students, staff, and the broader university community. In fulfilment of its obligation to maintain order, protect life, and safeguard property, the university management has taken this decisive step, deeming such activities unacceptable.
“Any student found involved in orchestration (‘signing off’) or related activities risks severe disciplinary measures, including rustication. Any outsiders entering the university premises to support such activities may face arrest and prosecution for disorderly conduct and breach of peace.”
