A group of suspected Boko Haram terrorists have seized complete control of the Marte Local Government Area in Borno State after carrying out a surprise attack on a Forward Operating Base (FOB) in LGA Borno State, leaving at least several soldiers dead.
Confirming the incident, Borno State Police Command’s spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent (ASP), Nahum Daso, disclosed that the incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, May 12.
He said, “I do not have the comprehensive information yet. Once I’m done verifying the data, I will reach out.”
However, a male soldier who chose to remain anonymous, stated that the terrorists attacked the base at dawn, catching the troops unawares and sparking a violent shootout that lasted nearly an hour.
He said, “They took the base by surprise.
“The gun duel lasted for about an hour before they overran the position.
We lost five men, a Kaduna guy identified as Shehu; a Delta guy identified as Patrick; Franklin; and two others whose full names I can’t recall.
“Most of us know each other by nicknames.”
The soldier noted that the deceased soldiers held the ranks of private and lance corporal.
However, Captain Reuben Kovangiya, the spokesperson for Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK), had not yet made any comment regarding the issue.
A viral footage that surfaced on social media, captured moments the soildiers broke down in tears after returning to the base littered with the remains of the colleagues.
