The people of Daura have expressed deep sorrow over the death of former Nigerian President, Alhaji Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away at the ripe age of 82 in London.
Speaking with NAN, the residents described his death as a great loss not only to the people of Daura but to the entire nation.
“We are heartbroken. Baba Buhari was not only a leader but a symbol of integrity and humility.
“He represented Daura on the global stage with dignity,” said Alhaji Mustapha Sani, Chairman, Hamdala Transportation said.
Many people gathered in public squares and Mosques to offer special prayers for the repose of the departed noble, pious, patriotic and humble soul of a son of the soil.
Politicians, youths leaders, elders and women in Daura have paid tributes, highlighting his legacy of public service, discipline, and love for the country.
In a condolence message, the community extended heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family, particularly Hajiya Aisha Buhari and the children.
They prayed that Almighty Allah grant him eternal rest and give his family the strength to bear the loss.
“Daura will never forget him. He was our pride,” Malam Salihu Usman added.
The funeral prayers and other arrangements are being anticipated as the community prepares to receive his body for final rites.
Neighbours recall Buhari’s humility, generosity, discipline
Meanwhile, some neighbours of the late President Muhammadu Buhari in Daura, Katsina state, have described him as humble, disciplined and generous in his relationship with all categories of people during his life.
The neighbours were in grief since his death was announced on Sunday around 4:30pm, at a London clinic at the age of 82 years.
The residents told NAN in an interview that Buhari would continue to be remembered for his good character and manners.
The neighbours revealed that the late President’s unwavering simplicity made him to remain deeply connected to his community throughout his life.
A close neighbour, Alhaji Lawal Nalado, told NAN that Buhari was a leader who never allowed power to change his lifestyle or attitude towards those around him.
Nalado said Buhari was a humble and disciplined man, even before he rose to national prominence.
“He valued time, upheld daily prayers, and maintained respectful relationships with people of all ages. Buhari will be remembered for his generosity, particularly during Sallah and other festive periods.
“During every Sallah celebration, he distributes money, food items, rams and other essential commodities to the less privileged. He never tired of extending a helping hand to those in need,” Nalado added.
He noted that in spite of holding the highest office in the country, Buhari continued to live modestly and remained approachable.
“What stood out most about him was his integrity and fairness. He treated everyone equally and never distanced himself from his people,” he stressed.
Another neighbour, Alhaji Hamisu Ibrahim, praised the former president for his steadfast commitment to his religion of Islam.
Ibrahim added that beyond his public persona, Buhari was passionate about youth development and moral upbringing.
“He often advised young people to be disciplined, avoid drugs, and dedicate themselves to education and honest living.”
Many residents believed that the former President’s legacies would continue to inspire future generations.
They expressed hope that his values of honesty, patriotism and service would not be forgotten, but passed on through leadership and community mentorship.
Buhari’s death, a national tragedy — Emir of Daura
The Emir of Daura, Alhaji Umar Faruk, has described the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari as a national tragedy and a painful loss to the people of Daura Emirate, Katsina State, and the nation at large.
Speaking with NAN at the Daura Palace on Monday, the royal father said the death of the former president was a great loss to Nigeria and the entire African continent.

Faruk said,”.We have lost a true son of Daura,a pillar of honesty,and one of the most selfless leaders Nigeria has ever produced.”
He praised Buhari’s legacy of public service, stating that his contributions to national development, security reforms, and anti-corruption efforts would never be forgotten.
“President Buhari stood for truth, justice, and accountability. He lived a modest life and placed national interest above personal gain. His passing is a reminder of the great sacrifices he made for this country,” the emir added.
While praying for the repose of his soul, Faruk called on Nigerians to continue upholding the values Buhari stood for — unity, discipline, and service.
“We extend our deepest condolences to his family, especially Hajiya Aisha Buhari and their children.”
Also, the Chairman, Daura Local Government, Alhaji Bala Musa, described Buhari as a man of principle who lived a life of simplicity, devotion to Islam, and service to the nation.
“We in Daura feel a deep personal loss. He was our father, our mentor, and a proud son of the soil. His humility and honesty will continue to inspire generations,”he said.
Musa urged the citizens of Daura and Nigerians at large to remain peaceful and united during this period of mourning.
Shettima arrives London to receive Buhari’s body
Meanwhile, Vice President Kashim Shettima, on Monday, has arrived in London on the directive of President Bola Tinubu, following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Shettima was accompanied by the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila.
On arrival, the vice-president was received by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, and the Gov. Babagana Zulum of Borno.
Shettima will accompany the remains of Buhari to Nigeria for burial in Daura, Katsina State. The former leader died in London on Sunday after a prolonged illness.
