The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Iyorchia Ayu, has said those championing the campaign to see him resign are no without knowledge of the party’s ideals.
He stated this in an interview with the Hausa Service of the BBC which was monitored by our correspondent.
Ayu noted that he is not worried about the calls for his resignation because those behind it are youngsters who do not have a grasp of the goals of the party when it was formed.
He vowed not to allow anyone to destabilise the party as PDP members and stakeholders elected him based on laid down rules.
The PDP helmsman stressed that even if there would be another election, those calling for his resignation would not be replacing him, hence the need for them to understand the essence of the party’s formation and the rules that guide its operations.
“I was voted as PDP Chairman for four-year tenure and I’m yet to complete a year. Atiku’s victory doesn’t affect the chairman’s position. I won my election based on our party’s constitution,” Ayu stated.
He then added that “I didn’t commit any offence; I’m only reforming the party so I’m not bothered with all the noises. I know I’m doing my work and I didn’t steal any money so I see no reason for all these talks.

“When we started PDP, these children were not around. They are children who do not know why we formed the party. We will not allow any individual to destabilise our party.”
The party’s 0National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, speaking against the backdrop of the interview, admonished the party leaders and stakeholders to ignore the crisis and “focus on the big picture rather than the little picture.”
On their part, the One Nigeria Movement, described Ayu’s remark as the height of arrogance.
The group stated this in a statement signed by its Convener-General, Ahmed Sodiq-Mugoro; and Secretary, Babatunde Aliyu, on Wednesday.
The body lampooned Ayu, blaming him for abandoning the PDP for the Action Congress in 2007 and worked against the party.
They therefore question the morality of the National Chairman to be addressed as a founding father.
In a separate remark, a PDP Chieftain in Kogi State, Chief Sam Abenemi described the statement as a sour taste in the mouth, stressing that as a democratic institution, the PDP was beyond a platform anyone can appropriate to a group and lay claim to at this stage of democratic practice.
