The Lagos State Government has warned residents staying in the Lekki area of the State, over the safety of borehole, that many may be consuming contaminated water.
TheNewsGuru.com(TNG) reports that Mahmood Adegbite, the Permanent Secretary of the Office of Drainage Services and Water Resources made this known during a recent stakeholders’ meeting.
He explained that untreated wastewater in the area is seeping into underground water sources, posing serious health risks.
“Everyone digging a borehole within the Lekki axis is probably drinking what I will call ‘shit water,” Adegbite said.
“However, if we are able to treat all the waste water within this axis which we have plans for, we should be able to also eradicate any form of disease that might result from non-treatment of our waste.”
Adegbite also highlighted the state’s ongoing battle with flooding, noting the unusual heavy rainfall experienced in August, typically a period of reduced rainfall known as the “August break.”
“In terms of flooding, despite the fact that we have committed so much, however, we still need a lot to do in that space,” he said.
