[Devotional] IN HIS PRESENCE: Increase comes from God

[Devotional] IN HIS PRESENCE: Life lessons from King David (1)

Read: 1 SAMUEL 22-24

Meditation verse:

“David therefore departed from there and escaped to the cave of Adullam. So, when his brothers and all his father’s house heard it, they went down there to  him” (1 Samuel 22:1).

God had chosen David as a replacement for Saul. He had sent Samuel to anoint  him as king. However, despite being anointed by God, David went through tough  times. Saul continuously sought to end his life and he had to flee on several  occasions: dwelling in caves, strongholds, and mountains. Whilst in the  stronghold, he handed over his parents to the King of Moab, requesting that  they stay in the land. Another time, he pretended to be mad before the king of  Gath, because he was afraid for his life. What does this help us understand? Even when God has called you into the specific assignment He has for you, you are  likely to encounter difficulties. The anointing does not exclude you form the  hardship, it prepares you for it.

There are also lessons on graciousness and humility to be gleaned from David’s  life. When faced with an opportunity to kill Saul, David refused to end his life,  saying “I will not lift my hands against the Lord’s anointed”. Whilst speaking to  Saul, moments later, he addressed him as “my lord the king and my father”. He  also bowed his head to the earth, a gesture signifying respect. Saul was taken  aback and wept as David informed him that he would not reward him with evil.  David displayed such humility, righteousness, and forgiveness in his dealings  with the one who had sought to end his life.

How do you and I respond to the people who hurt us? Are we forgiving or quick  to retaliate? Do we pay evil for evil or reward good for evil? Evil cannot be  overcome with evil, only by good. Proverbs 15:1 says “a soft answer turns away wrath, but harsh word stirs up anger. “Therefore, if your enemy is hungry, feed  him. If he is thirsty, give him drink. For in so doing, you will heap coals of fire on  his head. Do not be overcome by evil but overcome evil with good”. Great life  lessons indeed form the life of King David.
