[Devotional] IN HIS PRESENCE: Wheat vs tares?

Read: Mathew 13:24-29

Meditation verse:

“But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among  the wheat, and went away” (Mathew 13:25 NIV).

In the parable of the weeds, Jesus compares the Kingdom of heaven to a man  who sowed good seed in his field. Yet, while he slept, the enemy came quietly  and sowed weeds among the wheat. When the wheat sprouted, so did the tares.

Satan, the accuser of the brethren, seeks to corrupt the good seed of God’s  Word in your life. His tares show up as spiritual apathy, unbelief,  discouragement, marital discord, sickness, financial hardship, and many other  distractions. His goal is to choke the fruits of righteousness and hinder your  growth in Christ. Notice carefully: the enemy could only sow while the man was  asleep. In the same way, the enemy exploits spiritual negligence, prayerlessness,  and complacency.

How then can you guard against tares?

Watch and pray (Matthew 26:41).

Hold firmly to sound doctrine (1 Timothy 4:16).

Walk humbly and carefully (1 Corinthians 10:12).

Pursue spiritual growth diligently (2 Peter 1:5–8).

Fill your mind with godly thoughts (Philippians 4:8).

By staying awake spiritually and cultivating the disciplines of faith, prayer, and  obedience, you protect the field of your life. As 2 Peter 1:10 reminds us:  “Therefore brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure,  for if you do these things, you will never stumble.”

Prayer for today:

Lord, please help me to stay awake and alert in my walk with You. Strengthen  me to guard the good seed of Your Word in my life, so that no tare of the enemy  will take root, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
