Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka has opened up about his Nigerian heritage in an interview with the BBC.
The 22-year-old football star highlighted the importance of his Nigerian roots and explained the meaning behind his Yoruba name.
Although Saka was born in England, his parents are Nigerian, and he has always embraced his dual nationality.
As a graduate of Arsenal’s Hale End academy, he consistently acknowledges his Nigerian culture and heritage.
During an appearance on BBC Five’s Football Daily Show, Saka was asked about his connection to Nigeria. He shared, “It means a lot to me. Growing up with Nigerian parents, but I grew up in this country, so both sides mean a lot to me.”
When discussing the meaning of his Yoruba name, Saka proudly stated, “It means added joy.” He added, “I like my name. If I remember correctly, I think my grandma gave it to me. I have to double-check with my parents, but I think I’m right.”
