CHAN 2025 Qualifier: Eguavoen upbeat about Super Eagles chances against Ghana [Team list]

Forget foreign coach, retain Eguavoen – Adepoju tells NFF

Former Nigerian international, Mutiu Adepoju has backed Augustine Eguavoen to remain the coach of the Super Eagles.

Following the sacking of Gernot Rohr, Eguavoen was appointed to take the Eagles to the African Cup of Nations (AFCON 2021) in Cameroon.

The team did well in the group stage but crashed out against Tunisia in the round of 16.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) already lined up Portuguese, Jose Peseiro, to take charge of the team on a permanent basis.

But Adepoju believes that Eguavoen is up to the task.

“I don’t have an issue with a foreign coach for the Super Eagles, but I think we have capable hands at home,” he is quoted to have said.

“Eguavoen did well considering the timing, he can build on this. It’s not my decision to make, it’s the NFF. But if you ask me, I will retain Eguavoen.”

In March, Nigeria will play Ghana over two legs for a place at the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup. The NFF is expected to announce a permanent manager soon
