Several people were injured yesterday following a stampede at the entrance of Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital.
According to The Punch, the incident occurred while football enthusiasts tried to enter the stadium. The fans, who were at the stadium to watch a match between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Chipolopo of Zambia were allegedly beaten by soldiers at the gates of the stadium with heavy sticks.
Some of the victims of the incidence were reportedly conveyed to the hospital by ambulances which arrived the scene.
When contacted, State Police Public Relations Officer, Elkana Bala, confirmed the incident, ” It is confirmed that nobody died. But some persons were injured while they were struggling to gain access to the stadium. THose affected were taken to the hospital for medical attention.”
