Redknapp named as new Birmingham boss

Birmingham City have appointed Harry Redknapp as their new manager.

The ex-West Ham, Tottenham and QPR boss succeeds Gianfranco Zola, who resigned on Monday following defeat by Burton.

Redknapp, 70, took charge of Jordan for two World Cup qualifiers last year, and also worked as an advisor to Derby County last season.

Birmingham are currently 20th in the Championship, just three points above the relegation zone and they face local rivals Aston Villa on Saturday.

Redknapp’s appointment was announced just 16 hours after Zola’s departure, but the length of his contract has not yet been disclosed.

He has not managed in England since leaving QPR in February 2015, having taken Rangers up to the Premier League via the play-offs in 2013-14.

He won the FA Cup with Portsmouth in 2008 and led Tottenham to the Champions League quarter-finals during a four-year spell at White Hart Lane.

In 2016, he was also made a director at Wimborne Town and a football consultant with Australian side Central Coast Mariners.
