[Photos] Beggar arrested with N500,000 and $100 in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) Social Development Secretariat (SDS) has arrested a 48-year-old beggar, Hadiza Ibrahim with N500,000 and 100 dollars.

Malam Sani Amar, the Director, Social Welfare Services of the secretariat, confirmed the arrest on Tuesday, in Abuja.

Amar described Ibrahim, an indigene of Kaduna State as one of the die-hard beggars that had been apprehended by the secretariat’s taskforce many times.

The director accused the beggar of accumulating money she realised from begging over the years without investing it.

Amar said, “It was very fortunate that on Feb. 9, Ibrahim was apprehended among other beggars on Adetokunbo Ademola Crescent in Wuse II.

“In all honesty, we never knew that she has such amount of money on her.

“What we normally do whenever we apprehend people we search them thoroughly to ensure that they do not carry any object that can harm them or our staff.

“Then, we profile them to know where they come from and what they are doing apart from begging.’’

According to the director, from our assessment within a decade that we have been apprehending Ibrahim, she seems to be socially deformed not mentally.

“She knows what she is doing, she can differentiate between right and wrong,’’ he said.

Amar described Ibrahim as “economical saboteur’’.

“There are many people looking for 10 per cent of what she has as capital to do a business that would sustain them without resorting to begging.

“But she is here with N500,000 plus 100 dollars notes which is N57,000 equivalent yet not investing it and still pretending to be poor beggar who has nothing to eat.

“So, in our own way as social councilors, we will subject her to psychosocial therapy because she has social deformity,’’ he said.

Amar said that the woman would be subjected to a condition to make her to realise that she “is physically fit, mentally alert to do certain things for herself without resorting to begging’’.

The director maintained that the money belonged to her.

According to him, the FCT Vocational and Rehabilitation Centre at Bwari Area Council will rehabilitate her.

Earlier, the beggar told NAN that she had been begging on the street of Abuja for the past 10 years.

“I used to come out daily from 4 p.m. to 11p.m. to beg for money around Wuse II and Maitama. Sometimes rich people around the area give me N5,000 or N10,000 and even dollars.

“If I get huge amount of money, I will travel to my hometown, Kwanan Danja in Zaria, Kaduna state and when the money is finished I will come back.

“The day I was apprehended with the money, I came out with it to buy kitchen utensils for my daughter who will be getting married very soon.

“It’s another God-sent day for me. I have completed 61 years. I can’t believe this. My mother died at 90-91 years almost,” he said.

“I said I was going to go 100. It is by God’s power, not by man’s might. I don’t know what’s going to happen when I go 100. But I know I want to leave a history in this country.”

“I am not sex-crazed at all. I can abstain for two years. When I had a problem, I stayed off sex for a long time. I am not controlled by sex. As of now, I have stayed off sex for at least four months. Remember that I was poisoned in December 2020, so I need to recuperate before engaging in such acts. My wife is also missing me. It was not easy for her. She was crying every minute because she genuinely loves me.

“Some people have said that people with potbellies are not good lovers or sexually active but being good on the bed is relative. My answer to this is that I have 13 children (10 boys and two girls) though I lost one of them. That is the evidence of my sexual virility. I hatch children like pigeons.”

UBA, First Bank, Fidelity, others cut offshore monthly spending limit on Naira Card to $100

The United Bank for Africa (UBA), First Bank of Nigeria (FBN) and Fidelity Bank have joined the list of Nigerian banks that have reduced international spending limits for their customers as the foreign exchange situation in the country continues to bite harder.

As they face tightening forex liquidity, it will be difficult for banks to meet their dollar commitments, particularly for debit card usage, hence, the need to cut down the spending limits.

In a message sent to its customers and sighted by TheNewsGuru.com, TNG First Bank announced that it has now limited the amount its customers can henceforth spend for offshore transactions in a month, $100.

“Spend now and pay later with your Naira Credit Card. Enjoy up to N3,000,000 credit facility, $100 monthly spend limit on international transactions, 45 interest-free days, flexible repayment plan, access to over 29 million channels worldwide, card control and protection using the Card Services feature on FirstMobile App,” the bank said in the notice.

Equally, fellow tier-one lender, UBA, also announced that it was following the path due to the uncertainties surrounding the forex market which had forced its hand to review its international spending limits.

The company, in a notice to its customers, said, “In light of the uncertainties in the Foreign Exchange Market, we have had to review international card spending limits.

“The new applicable limit on your Naira card is $100 (or its equivalent in other foreign currencies) monthly effective August 21, 2020.

“Whilst we note this significant reduction from your previous spend limit, we would like to reassure that this limit will be revised upwards as the market continues to improve.”

Also, Fidelity Bank took the same step, putting $100 cap on international transactions via its Naira card.

The bank stated, “Please be informed that the spending limit for international transactions on our Fidelity Naira Visa and MasterCard is now $100 monthly.

“This means that your card can be used on Point-of-Sale (POS), WEB and ATM for a cumulative transaction value of $100 monthly.”

In similar vein, Ecobank Nigeria also confirmed that a $100 monthly limit has been placed on international spending using its cards.

TNG recalls that Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) had two weeks ago slashed the international spending limit on its Naira Mastercard by 80 per cent to $100 per month from $500 it first reduced it to earlier in the year.

It was also reported that Stanbic IBTC Bank said its customers will only be able to spend $500 per month in terms of offshore card transactions and placed a monthly limit of $100 on withdrawals.

Another tier one bank, Zenith Bank Plc, announced a temporary suspension of the use of debit cards for cash withdrawals abroad while it slashed the monthly spending limit for international card users to $200.

I want to live above 100 years – Obasanjo

Nigeria’s former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has said he wished to live above 100 years.

The reason he adduced for wanting to live above 100 years is to have more opportunities to celebrate with the Agura of Gbagura, Oba Sabur Bakare, Jamolu II.

The Punch reports that the former president was part of the dignitaries present at the first anniversary of the monarch held in Abeokuta on Tuesday.

Oba Bakare received the staff of office from former Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun, on May 21, 2019, as the 9th Agura of Gbagura in Egbaland.

The monarch while commemorating his anniversary held interdenominational service with believers of all faiths and commissioned a borehole for the community.

Speaking at the event, Obasanjo, who clocked 83 this year, said he wished to be at the 20th anniversary of the monarch.

He said, “I will be here to celebrate your 20 years anniversary with you whether I am invited or not.

“By the time I also partake in celebrating your 20th anniversary with you, if God wishes, He can call me to come and meet Him in heaven because I know by that time, I will be above 100 or more.”

Obasanjo urged the monarch to propagate unity among traditional rules in Yorubaland, saying that there were times that “Kabiyesi don’t listen to words and there are times he does listen to words. If we are united, there is nothing we can’t do in Yorubaland and Nigeria as a whole.”

The Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, stated that the past one year of the reign of Oba Bakare had been characterised by direct engagement of Egba monarchs, leaders, and other stakeholders for social cohesion and unity of purpose.

“For all of the political hacks out there, if I hadn’t done my job well, & early, we would have lost 1 1/2 to 2 Million People, as opposed to the 100,000 plus that looks like will be the number.

“That’s 15 to 20 times more than we will lose. I shut down entry from China very early!

“One person lost to this invisible virus is too much, it should have been stopped at its source, China, but I acted very quickly, and made the right decisions.

“Many of the current political complainers thought, at the time, that I was moving far to fast, like Crazy Nancy!”.
