  • Nigeria to issue N150bn green bonds in 2018 – Official

Following increased calls for climate funding, Mr Ahmad Salihijo, a technical assistant to the Minister of Environment, said the ministry planned to issue N150 billion green bonds to the public.

Salihijo revealed this in a panel discussion on Making Climate Finance Work for Women and Non-State Actors organized by Climate Wednesday in the just concluded social media week in Lagos.

Green bonds, also known as climate bonds, are fixed income securities issued to finance projects that have positive impact on the environment and provide solution to change.

Nigeria’s debut issuance of Green bonds was part of many efforts directed towards its Paris based NDC commitments.

He said following the success of debut issuance of N10.69 billion bonds issued in 2017, the ministry was now targeting the issuance of N150 billion green bonds in 2018.

Everybody is excited about the idea of climate funding, everybody wants to be a part of it. Highly reputable organizations within and internationally are supporting us.

We will use the success of our first issuance to see how we can issue more. Where we are now, seeing the success of the first issue, our target this year is N150 billion. Already we are getting more proposals and support,” he said.

The technical adviser revealed that proceeds from the green bonds are channeled towards three major projects.

We came up with guidelines for the green bonds, where we categorize the use of proceeds. We were able to advice other MDAs on how to place these bonds.

As at today, green bonds have issued N10.6 billion over three projects.

The first project is the Energizing Education Project registered with the Federal Ministry of Power under the Rural Electrification Agency, the second project is the Rural Electrification Municipal Project also under the Federal Ministry of Power and the third project is the Afforestation Project which is registered under the Federal Ministry Of Environment,” he said.

Salihijo said the success of the green bonds in Nigeria resulted in a positive assessment by the international Climate Bond Initiatives, where the country is rated as the only country in Africa with such certification.

We were able to get an assessment by the Climate Bond Initiatives. This is a very rare achievement for the country, we are the only ones in Africa that has that certification from the Climate Bond Initiatives.

To get the certification we had to go through a rigorous processes where all our projects were studied carefully,” he said.

  • Double wahala for ‘Bitto’ as Big brother summons him over forceful romance with Princess

There was a mild drama at the ongoing Big Brother Naija 2018 season, tagged ‘Double Wahala, after Big Brother summoned one of the housemates, Bitto over an alleged forceful romance he had with Princess.

Recall the show kicked off the buzz it’s known for ‘intrigues’ yesterday after Miracle’s marriage controversy to his ‘romantic’ kiss with Nina during shower.

On Bitto’s forceful romance with Princess, Bitto was reportedly summoned to diary room by Biggie after cameras showed him touching Princess on her bed, even as she appeared not to like it.

The housemate may have just earned himself a punishment for his action, though not yet announced by Big brother.

With 20 housemates in the house battling for the ultimate prize of N45 million, the reality show may be double trouble for housemates who break the rules.

Recall, a similar incidence happened in BBNaija 2017 edition when Kemen was condemned for allegedly touching Tboss without her consent

  • Africa to witness economic growth in 2018 – UN

Africa’s economy is expected to grow 3.5 per cent in 2018, an increase of 0.3 percentage points from 2017, a UN official said Thursday.

Speaking at 30th AU Summit being held in Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa, Vera Songwe, Secretary-General of the UN Economic Commission for Africa ( UNECA ), said the growth uptick will be underpinned by strengthened external demand and moderate increase in commodity prices.

She said the growth will also be supported by more favorable domestic conditions including restoration of oil production in a number of countries and expected recovery in 2018 and 2019 of major economies like Egypt, Nigeria and South Africa.

However, she said the growth would not be enough for the continent’s rising population of more than one billion, 70 per cent of whom are categorized in the youth group.

Songwe said: “adjusting for population growth, the projected economic growth remains inadequate for Africa to make significant progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals ( SDGs ), the eradication of poverty and hunger.

“Although poverty level is reducing, it is still intolerably high at an average of 40 percent for the continent. As Such, there’s need to upscale efforts at structural reforms, prudent economic management and promoting regional integration.”

Nevertheless, UNECA projects the uptick in economic growth to continue for some time with 3.7 percent economic growth expected in 2019.

SDGs are a universal set of goals, targets and indicators that UN member states will be expected to use to frame their agendas and political policies until 2030.

  • Ekiti 2018: I have the track record to redeem Ekiti from PDP’s failure – Kayode Ojo

An Ekiti State governorship aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Engr. Kayode Ojo, has proffered practical steps how he intend to redeem Ekiti people from the hotbed of poverty if he wins his party’s primary election and eventually emerges governor of the state.

Ojo believes Ekiti has all the potentials of creating its wealth and reduce total dependence on the allocations from the Federal Government before being able to grow its infrastructure.

Lamenting the many failures of the People Democratic Party [PDP], in the state, led by Governor Ayedele Fayose, the Oil and Gas mogul told TheNewsGuru.com that all PDP came to do in Ekiti is more or less what we call ‘419’.

Kasyode who strongly posited that PDP has no vision or clear cut plan for Ekiti state, however, promised to focus on the industrial strength of the State and the will of its people to drive its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

The Ijero-Ekiti-born entrepreneur said: “We should be working on how to move from being a rural state to an urban state where the about 136 towns and villages can boast of consistent power supply. To achieve this, all that we need is just 20 megawatt of power. Unfortunately, what you see right now is darkness everywhere.

“The good people of Ekiti State are yearning for something fresh, someone without political baggage, somebody who comes in from the private sector with experience in developing people and an entrepreneur that knows how to turn one Naira to two Naira.

“They want someone who has an antecedent in controlling several people to achieve a set goal, especially in the engineering sector where projects process takes long and you must deliver the project successfully, they want a person that has signed out cheques worth several millions. These are signs that such a person will not be moved by the money in government coffers and can control external influences.

According to the young politician and mentor to many, the state might be disadvantaged location wise but cannot fold its arms and continue to watch without doing anything to better the situation.

He praised Lagos State government for the feat achieved in drawing a budget of over N1trillion for 2018 fiscal year, noting that it is a record. “No state in Nigeria has achieved that feat. It’s because Lagos State is ready to generate enough revenue.

“So Ekiti State too has what it takes to stand tall among other States in Nigeria. But we need commitment buckled with experience. And what do I mean by experience, I mean we need somebody who has been able to turn N1 to N2. That’s the kind of leadership we need in Ekiti State, so that we can tap into what we have and use them to generate more revenue to develop the State.

He observed that the water produced by the state in partnership with UAC Nigeria Plc, Gossy Water could fetch the state more than the few millions it does right now, “only if it could be repackaged and rebranded. That table water has been like that almost since 2001 when it was established. Between then and now, how many times has Coca-Cola rebranded? So why is Gossy’s case like it is?” he pointed.

Ojo confirmed UAC’s claim that GOSSY is the only Natural Spring Water that passes through countless layers of rock from the aquifer of the Ikogosi Natural Springs in Ikogosi, Ekiti State which acts as a filter before it passes through micron filters, without chemical treatment or additives to enhance the quality or formation, saying that it is in better position as against some others packaged under unhealthy conditions.

“Nothing stops Ekiti from transporting the water to neighbouring states, especially Lagos with the large market. Our goal should be that Gossy is delivered to every five Star Hotel in town. It is regrettable that even within the state you can’t find it in the hotels. How much more outside the state.

“Currently, the investment fetches the government about 250million annually but can be expanded to become a N5billion investment. If you look at Ekiti today, everybody has seen that what PDP came to do in Ekiti is more or less what we call ‘419’. They had no vision, their major promise was ‘stomach infrastructure’. But if you look at the people’s stomachs now, they are still as flat as they were in 2014.

“So, majority of the people now understand that their lives cannot get better with just stomach infrastructure. They understand that their lives will only get better when there is opportunity for them to work, to earn money and use the money to support their families.

“If you look at APC states, you’ll see appreciable progress. I’m not saying everything is perfect, but you’ll see development of the people and the state. Everyone can see that APC governments grow the people.

“I have the track record, I have succeeded in the private sector, so, working for the people won’t be an issue. I have a successful engineering outfit that deals in all the equipment required for road construction and another one abroad that produces oil and gas specialized products. So, when I said Ekiti has the potentials to do far better than it is doing right now, you would understand that I have what it takes to fulfill these promises to Ekiti people.

“Well, we’ve seen people come in from the private sector and disappoint in government, but what is missing in them is compassion. I have always said that if we do not have someone with compassion, who is his brother’s keeper, we won’t get governance right.

“My life is not about me. It’s about others. That’s how it has always been and that’s why I’m in this race. I’ve looked in the eyes of ordinary people on the streets of Ekiti, and I feel for them; I know that their lives can be better.

“All we need is a person that knows how to utilise resources, how to make sure that the funds that come in are not just consumed. We can’t continue to consume and consume, we must produce our way out of poverty.

“What I am saying is that the people of Ekiti can entrust their futures and that of their children to me for the next four years. The state needs someone with compassion and across the state, and the people of Ekiti can testify that I have always shown compassion.

Oba Ogunwusi stated this in Ile-Ife on Saturday while speaking at the Grand-finale of a New Year Prayer Programme organised by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Ife Chapter.

  • 2018: I’m saddened Christmas, New Year celebrations wasn’t merry for Nigerians – Buhari

2018: I’m saddened Christmas, New Year celebrations wasn’t merry for Nigerians – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday lamented that Christmas and New Year celebrations for many Nigerians was nothing close to be tagged “Merry”.

Buhari who addressed Nigerians at 7am spoke about the lingering fuel crisis in the country, among other issues said “instead of showing love, companionship and charity, some of our compatriots chose this period to inflict severe hardship on us all by creating unnecessary fuel scarcity across the country”

The consequence was that not many could travel and the few who did had to pay exorbitant transport fares. This is unacceptable given that NNPC had taken measures to ensure availability at all depots. I am determined to get to the root of this collective blackmail of all Nigerians and ensure that whichever groups are behind this manipulated hardship will be prevented from doing so again.

Such unpatriotism will not divert the Administration from the course we have set ourselves. Our government’s watch word and policy thrust is CHANGE. We must change our way of doing things or we will stagnate and be left behind in the race to lift our people out of poverty and into prosperity.

My address to fellow Nigerians this morning is devoted mainly to informing you about the intense efforts this Administration is putting to address our country’s huge infrastructural deficit.

We are going to make significant in-roads in advancing road, rail and power projects across the country.

The Ministry of Power, Works and Housing is one of the drivers of this Government’s commitment to renew and increase Nigeria’s stock of infrastructure in order to achieve global economic competitiveness as targeted under the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan.

With regards to Railways, we have set ourselves ambitious targets. Already in construction stage is the Lagos-Kano Standard Gauge Railway.

The line should reach Ibadan from Lagos by the end of 2019 and will carry two million passengers per year and five million tons of cargo will be transported every year giving a substantial boost to the country’s economy.

Construction of the Kano – Kaduna segment is expected to commence this year and reach Kaduna by the end of 2019. By the end of 2021 the two ends will be joined so that we will have standard gauge railway across the main North-South trading route.

The Abuja – Kaduna route will be boosted by additional rolling stock next Thursday and will be able to handle one million commuters annually.

At the same time I have approved and negotiations will be concluded in the first part of this year for the Port Harcourt to Maiduguri line covering Aba, Owerri, Umuahia, Enugu, Awka, Abakaliki, Makurdi, Lafia, Jos, Bauchi, Gombe, Yola and Damaturu. The Abuja to Itakpe line will go through Baro and terminate in Warri with construction of a new seaport at Warri.

Negotiations are also advanced for the construction of other railway lines, firstly from Kano to Maradi in Niger Republic passing through Kazaure, Daura, Katsina, Jibia to Maradi.

Secondly, Lagos to Calabar the “Coastal Rail” through Ore, Benin, Agbor, Asaba, Onitsha, Sapele, Ughelli, Warri, Yenagoa, Otuoke, Port Harcourt, Aba, Uyo and Calabar. ” READ his full speech…
