Ahead of the 2019 elections, Barr. Dorothy Chiegeonu Ilegbune, African Democratic Congress (ADC) House of Representatives candidate for Amuwo Odofin/Oriade federal constituency, has promised her full one year salary to her constituents, if elected on February 16.

TheNewsGuru (TNG) reports the ADC House of Representatives candidate made the promise on Saturday during the Amuwo Decides 2019 community election debate organized by Festac Online in conjunction with TNG for candidates vying for House of Representatives and Lagos State House of Assembly.

Ilegbune, while stressing that no Kobo out of the constituency project fund would be mismanaged, said funds would be used judiciously for quarterly clearing of water hyacinth and federal drainage within the constituency.

She stated that she is going to engage her constituents on how best to utilize the funds, and promised to initiate several skills acquisition programs and open up water factories at different wards in her constituency in order to create jobs for her constituents, if she is elected to represent the people.

Ilegbune said she will influence the construction of new/alternative traffic routes, which she said will include linking 6th Avenue to Ejigbo, Oriade to riverine areas and connecting Flour Mill with Marina-CMS and UBA axis.

She also promised to work to ensure improved education in the constituency through regular provision of educational materials for school children, while also promoting ventures in agriculture as a way of empowering the people of the constituency and creating a reliable alternative to white collar job.

Ilegbune said, through her pet project, she will sponsor GCE, WAEC and JAMB examinations for indigent students in the constituency, and also provide bore holes for areas without reliable water supply.

“We will hold quarterly meeting on what need the constituency project fund should be plunged into. We will have quarterly/annual empowerment programme for widows, widowers, orphans, and the youths.

“I have the passion and I can do it better than any other person. I have sworn by the Bible to work for Amuwo Odofin/Oriade federal constituency and for massive empowerment to youths, men and women alike. All the eleven wards will have a registered business that will be yielding money on monthly basis operated as a cooperative.

“As a legal practitioner and as a woman, I assure Amuwo Odofin/Oriade constituents of effective, transparent and accountable representation. The House of Representatives is not a donkey parliament. Without mincing words, as a legal practitioner the difference will be made clear. Be rest assured that I am not going to be a bench warmer,” she stated.

  • 2019: Will internet services be unavailable during the elections?

In the past, during Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), Internet services and sometimes gsm services have been observed to be jammed with the view to curb examination malpractices through telecom services.

It has also been observed that internet services and also sometimes gsm services were occasionally unavailable during past elections in the country.

With the 2019 general elections drawing ever closer, Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has alleged that there are plans by the Federal Government through the Office of the National Security Adviser as directed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to work with internet service providers to shut down internet access during the elections.

Governor Wike said that shutting down internet access by the NSA and INEC is aimed at facilitating the rigging of the 2019 General elections.

He made the allegation when he received Savannah Centre Council on Peaceful and Violence Free Election in Nigeria at the Government House Port Harcourt.

The governor said that the negative actions of the Buhari administration indicate that they will not accept defeat when they lose the forthcoming elections.

He advised President Muhammadu Buhari to emulate Former President, Goodluck Jonathan who placed Nigeria above personal consideration.

According to Wike, “The National Security Adviser has met with INEC to ensure that internet service providers shut down the internet so that foreign bodies won’t see what’s happening in the country during the elections.

“They will jam all the frequencies and internet services to stop real-time communication during the elections.

“This plot to rig the forthcoming elections is a recipe for violence. They will not succeed in whatever they are planning. The world will be informed about their criminal activities.

“I don’t think this administration will willingly accept defeat. They should emulate Former President, Goodluck Jonathan who lost elections and accepted the outcome.

“There was no litigation. He went back home and did not generate crisis”.

  • 2019: INEC to accord some voters preferential treatment

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said some voters would be accorded preferential treatment during voting in the 2019 general elections.

TheNewsGuru (TNG) reports Cross River State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr Frankland Briyai stated this on Monday in Calabar at a meeting with People with Disabilities (PwDs).

The Commissioner said that the meeting was part of INEC’s desire to ensure that all stakeholders in the electoral process were carried along in its preparations for a credible election.

He said INEC was doing everything possible to ensure that everyone eligible voted in the election irrespective of his or her condition.

According to him, the commission is making special arrangements for PwDs to vote easily at the polling boots.

“The aged and People with Disabilities are to be given preferential treatment during voting and INEC is working on ensuring that all votes count this time,” he said.

He revealed that INEC registered 1,527,058 voters for the forthcoming General Elections.

He said that the number represented those registered before 2015 election and during the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) from 2017 to Aug. 2018.

He, however, said that some Permanent Voter Cards were yet to be collected, but expressed the hope that the number would be reduced drastically before the election.

“We have taken the PVCs collection to the wards and reports are coming in and we hope that before the elections all the cards may be collected,” he said.

Briyai advised the PwDs who were yet to collect their cards to visit the nearest collection centers in their area and collect their cards, so as to enable them vote during the election.

  • 2019: Army makes vow ahead of polls

The Nigerian Army has vowed to sanction any personnel found culpable of committing any electoral malpractice during the coming general elections.

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai disclosed this during his visit to the Nigerian Army Corps Signals in Lagos to inaugurate some buildings while also attending the corps’ reunion party which ended late on Saturday.

Buratai, represented by the Chief of Logistics, Maj.-Gen. Enobong Udoh, said all personnel must remain professional and apolitical during the coming General Elections.

“All officers and soldiers must remain apolitical and exhibit exceptional professionalism in the forthcoming tasks.

“You must report any unwholesome activities up the chain of command once it is beyond your powers of command.

“The full weight of the Armed Forces Act will be visited on any personnel found culpable of committing any electoral malpractice.”

He said that the Nigerian Army would continue to provide military aid to civilian authorities to guarantee security of the nation.

“We will support the Independent Electoral Commission, the Nigerian Police and other security agencies in concluding a successful election.’’

While inauguration the new quarters for officers and senior non-commissioned officers, Buratai said he remained committed to providing infrastructure to motivate personnel.

“This is a further validation of my vision of providing the necessary resources and infrastructure to motivate Nigerian Army personnel in the discharge of their professional duties.

“As you are aware, the Nigerian Army and indeed the nation is beset by a plethora of security challenges that have tasked our resources, ingenuity and resilience.

“Despite these, the welfare of troops remains priority in all my considerations and actions.

“My conviction is that a well motivated force, even with scare resources, can vanquish any external or internal foe.’’

He pledged to undertake infrastructure projects in all army barracks to enhance the working and living conditions of officers and men.

“For the officers and soldiers that would occupy these new blocks, you are enjoined to maintain these properties as you would your personal property.

“You must maintain the highest standard of general hygiene and the internal and external aesthetic of these buildings.’’

The COAS commended all the officers and soldiers of Nigerian Army Signals for their excellent professionalism in providing reliable and robust communication support to ongoing Nigerian Army operations, particularly, Operation LAFIYA DOLE.

“Your static and mobile communication platforms have greatly served as force multipliers in our operations against the various terrorist and criminal threats facing the country.

“It has also facilitated my command and control of the entire Nigerian Army.

“For the first time in the history of the Nigerian Army operations, the usual recourse to blame communications support for unsuccessful operations is no longer tenable.’’

Buratai thanked the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, President Muhammadu Buhari for his unrelenting support to the army and belief in its capability to defeat all aggressions against the nation.

Earlier, the Commander, Nigerian Army Signals, Maj.-Gen. Clement Olukoju, said that the newly constructed six blocks of flats consisted of two blocks for officers and four for senior non-commissioned officers.

  • 2019 Elections: Nigeria will Accept Nothing Short of Openness, Adherence to Rules – Dogara

    From Jonas Ike, Abuja

Owing to the failure of President Muhammadu Buhari to assent to the Electoral Act amendment Bill passed by the National Assembly three times, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Yakubu Dogara, has warned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Police that Nigerians would accept nothing short of complete openness, a level playing ground and strict adherence to extant laws in the conduct of the 2019 elections.

He also noted that the palpable fears of well-meaning Nigerians and the international community of the possibility of some forces working to manipulate the coming elections by exploiting the identified loopholes in the current Electoral Act, may become a reality if proactive steps are not taken by critical stakeholders.

In a speech to mark the resumption of the House from the Christmas and New Year recess delivered on Thursday, the Speaker said the National Assembly has done its possible best to deepen the nation’s democratic process by providing mechanisms that would guarantee successful and rancour-free elections.

According to him, by passing the Electoral Act Amendment Bill for the third time after the President had declined assent to it twice, it means that the impending general elections will not benefit from the innovative mechanisms crafted in its collaboration with international and development partners.

The Speaker stated, “It should remain a thing of pride for us that the National Assembly has done its best by taking steps to guarantee the successful and rancour-free conduct of the 2019 General Elections by passing the Electoral Act Amendment Bill for the third time after Mr President had declined assent to it twice. Lack of passage into Law of the amended Bill means that the impending General Elections will not benefit from the innovative mechanisms crafted in its collaboration with international and Development partners. Consequently, the palpable fears of well-meaning Nigerians and the international community of the possibility of some forces working to manipulate the coming elections by exploiting the identified loopholes in the current Electoral Act, may become a reality if proactive steps are not taken by critical stakeholders.

Hon. Members, I believe that our intention to improve on the successes of the 2015 General Election through the Amendment Bill, is very clear to all fair-minded Nigerians. The spate of serious allegations by stakeholders, corroborated by some Press reports against INEC and the Nigerian Police in the recent elections, which are already subjects of litigations, are some of the factors that gave rise to public apprehension on the success of the coming General Elections.

We had intended, through this Bill, to minimise the risk to the survival of our hard-won democracy through responsive and timely legislation aimed at ensuring free, fair and transparent elections. Nonetheless, as Parliament, we have done our best to guarantee the stability and growth of our fragile democracy, and I have no doubt that history will be very kind to us.

Under the present circumstance, we have no choice than to take INEC and the Police by their words and give them the benefit of doubt in their recent assurances to be impartial, efficient and truthful in the conduct of the coming elections. This is the minimum that the country deserves from them at this auspicious time. Nothing short of complete openness, a level playing ground and strict adherence to extant Laws will be acceptable to Nigerians.”

Dogara also called on the President and Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Muhammadu Buhari, to take a hard look at Nigeria’s national security architecture with a view to securing lives, national pride and prestige and to fight against unbridled violence.

We are all witnesses to the continuous deteriorating security situation in our country more especially in the North East, North West and some parts of the North Central. Only three days ago, scores of people were killed in Sokoto State and elsewhere,” he stated, adding, that hardly does any week pass without reports of mass killings and bloodletting, either by terrorists or armed bandits.

This calls for drastic, urgent and concerted action and efforts to bring to a quick end. Our citizens are looking up to us and we can’t afford to fail them because security of lives and properties is the primary purpose of government. The fight against unbridled violence is one we cannot afford to lose as we can’t do so and still keep our civilisation. The symptoms of the malady afflicting our national security architecture are in plain sight. It is therefore imperative for the President and Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces to take a hard look at our national security architecture with a view to fixing the malady in order to secure lives, national pride and prestige,” he said.

Addressing his colleagues, Hon Dogara noted that with less than five months to the end of the 8th National Assembly, now is a good time to reflect on the journey they started in June, 2015 and while the House can boast that it has done appreciably, the remaining period demands assiduous and expeditious work so that the huge legislative assignments that still lies ahead of them can be done with and the unsurpassed record of legislative outputs so far achieved by the House can be maintained.

Specifically, he called for accelerated legislative processing of the 2019 Appropriation so that government business will not be impeded, as well as other Bills under consideration which are critical to the development of our country. This is just as he reminded them to strike a good balance between their commitment to legislative duties and participation in the campaigns by streamlining their political timetable and schedules to make room for attendance to legislative duties as much as is expected of them.

While calling for the highest form of decorum in the campaigns, the Speaker stated, “I find it imperative on this occasion to call on all our political leaders to cultivate the highest level of decorum, responsibility and respect for the Law in our electioneering campaigns. We must, through our conduct, show our commitment to the successful and peaceful conduct of the 2019 elections and above all, the sustenance of our democracy. We should avoid the tendency of being hypocritical by engaging in misdeeds that we are quick to point out in our opponents. Let us be guided by our conscience and the teachings of our religions, which demand that we judge ourselves before judging others.”

He expressed gratitude for the continued support and unity of the members to the leadership of the House, and cautioned that “neither contest for elective office nor elections are ends in themselves as they are merely the means by which we seek to serve the people and indeed humanity. Where our intentions are genuine and honorable, we shall never seek power at the expense of the lives and properties of those we seek to serve. This should be our resolve across board.”

The Jeddo community leader pleaded with Okowa to ensure that contractor handling the Okpe road is mobilised back to site for speedy completion of the road.

Also speaking, Chief Robert Onome, President General of Okpe Union Worldwide, said the stride of Okowa in the state is worth giving support for.

“Governor Okowa has shown with his first term the need to give him support for second term.

“The development he has put in place in Delta has proved the worth of him.

“For recognising our communities in his government, we will work assiduously to ensure he gets maximum votes.

“We have all it takes to deliver,” he said.

The campaign was well attended by chiefs, elders, leaders and youths of the three communities.

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has declared that 2019 General Elections will be used by Rivers people to put an end to the dictatorial tendencies of political godfathers.

Governor Wike also stated that Rivers politics cannot be controlled by any single politician, because it is not a State in the South-West where a political godfather has usurped the mandate of the people.

Speaking during the dedication of the 2019 PDP Campaigns at the Cathedral Church of Saint, Port Harcourt on Sunday, Governor Wike said if Rivers people allow political godfathers to succeed in planting their godsons, they will suffer the consequences.

“If you allow Rivers State to be like one of the states in the south-west, we will all suffer for it.

“Luckily for us, we don’t speak one language. Therefore, it is very difficult for any leader from an ethnic nationality to control the entire state. In that South-West state, a political godfather says something against a sitting governor and it happened.

Governor Wike prayed God to grant INEC and Police the courage to act in line with their constituonal roles during the 2019 General elections.

Ustaz Abubakr Siddeeq, an Islamic Scholar, has called on the electorate to vote credible leaders at all levels in the forthcoming general elections in order to fast track the development of the country.

Siddeeq made the call on Sunday in Abuja at a lecture to mark the 16th anniversary of Al-Habibiyyah Islamic Society.

In a lecture titled “Evolving purposeful leadership through corruption free elections”, he stressed the need to elect leaders with the fear of God and passion to develop the country.

The Islamic scholar urged the electorate to vote for leaders based on their capabilities and not their political party, religion or ethnic consideration.

“We should strive to vote for credible leaders at all levels in the forthcoming general elections.

“We should avoid voting for our leaders based on their political parties like we witnessed in 2015, ” he said.
