2019: Tambuwal declares no intentions for president

The executive governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, is yet to publicly declare intentions to run for the office of the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the forthcoming 2019 General Elections.

TheNewsGuru reports the Sokoto State Governor only defected from the All Progressives (APC) party to opposition Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday.

However, he said, “I have consulted widely especially with the people of Sokoto and they have confidently assured me of my next political move”.

In his defection speech, Tambuwal said good governance viz-a-viz economic wellbeing of his people prompted his departure from the APC.

“I speak to you today with a mixture of sadness and relief because I did not expect that the APC, which promised so much when the People’s Democratic party (PDP) stood under the sway of impunity, could not maintain or manage whatever good it inherited.

“It has also not broken new grounds in any positive sense, but has instead reached historically unprecedented heights of impunity in all manner of vices far above and beyond the challenges which made some of us to leave the PDP about four years ago to join others to form the APC.

“The party has brazenly turned itself into a sanctuary for the corrupt and a machine for rigging and for the rape of democracy.

“Let me also put it on record that all attempts to discuss the electoral promises of the APC-led government, including the restructuring of the country as promised Nigerians and as contained in the APC manifesto, have proved abortive.

“Beyond that, I cannot look those who elected me as their Governor here in Sokoto State in the face and boldly point to any meaningful Federal Projects initiated in the state under the APC government.

“Even the bulk of uncompleted Federal Projects here that were inherited from the previous administration have largely remained in their state of neglect. Sokoto State is also not being meaningfully carried along in political appointments and in other matters of national importance.

“Like most states of the North, and indeed the entire federation, elders and traditional institutions have come under measured disrespect.

“The recent attack in Tabinnii in Rabah LGA of Sokoto State, the routine invasion of Zamfara State by armed bandits, the now-regular killing of policemen by unknown gun men all over the country, the regular massacre of innocent people in the North East axis and many similar daily incidents, do not attract much attention any more.

“Good governance, viz-a-viz economic wellbeing of our people, remains the major reason for my action of today. Information from National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) shows that over nine million jobs have been lost in the last 3 years, since the APC Government came into office.

“While youth unemployment rate was 11.70 per cent during the fourth quarter of 2014, it rose to 33.10 per cent in third quarter of 2017 under the APC Government. The economy is not showing any real signs of improvement.

“Our educational and health institutions are in retreat. Poverty is on rampage and still ravages the land. It is unacceptable that majority of those who voted for APC in 2015 should have nothing good to show for it.

“As in the past, it is only my interest in equity, the wellbeing of Nigerians and a befitting future for our teeming youths, national unity and economic prosperity that has led to my new locus in Nigerian politics today.

“We all have a duty to do our best, while nudging our political parties to progressively align political contests in Nigeria along clear ideological lines; such that sooner rather than later the aspirations and the will of our people will be the only determinant of election outcomes.

“Let me at this juncture state emphatically that I return to the PDP with a clear conscience today, because the party has learnt some bitter lessons and noted what mistakes it must avoid in the future.

“It is now a repositioned and forward looking political party to which I now pledge loyalty, in my resolve to contribute towards improving the lives of Nigerians and expanding opportunities for the youths.

“It is only by working together as agents of development that we can promote excellence, competence, good governance and enthronement of genuine democracy to save Nigeria,” he stated.

‘2019 elections may never hold if…’

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Prince Uche Secondus, on Wednesday in Abuja, warns that the 2019 general elections may not hold if the July 14 governorship election in Ekiti State is rigged.

He said the election must be free, fair and credible.

Secondus spoke at the national secretariat of the party while playing host to the Forum of PDP Local Government Chairmen who had paid him a courtesy visit.

He said the PDP would do everything within the law to win the 2019 presidential election to “save Nigerians from the All Progressives Congress-inflicted hardship.”

He also charged members of the forum to work hard to reposition the party in their respective domains, just as he assured them that the party under his stewardship was committed to free, fair and credible polls.

He said, “It is no longer business as usual at Wadata as the party has decentralised power to the grassroots to strengthen the party in readiness for the 2019 polls.

To guard against corrupting party officials in the future, the National Working Committee would not assign hungry people on its assignments at whatever level.

We have warned them not to rig the Ekiti governorship election because there will be a crisis. There may be no election in 2019 if Ekiti election is rigged.

We won’t post persons who are hungry on party’s assignments; people who are looking for money. We have resolved here at Wadata that no one can change positions or names of people that have won elections. That was in the past.”

Secondus further charged them to use every legitimate channel to expose the failings of the APC, stressing that come 2019, the concerted efforts of all critical stakeholders of the party would help bring the APC down on its knees.

While noting that the PDP was not against the fight against corruption, Secondus tasked the Department of State Services to immediately charge a former governor of Benue State, Mr. Gabriel Suswam, to court instead of keeping him in its custody.

You cannot detain a man and not take him to court. The government must release Suswam as soon as possible,” he added.

Chairman of the forum, Mr. Kabiru Bello Dan-Dogo, lauded the leadership style of the PDP chairman and promised to mobilise grassroots support to wrest power from the ruling party in 2019.

  • 2019: Kingsley Moghalu declares for YPP

Presidential aspirant, Kingsley Moghalu, has on Thursday announced he will be contesting the 2019 presidential elections under the Young Progressive Party (YPP).

Making the announcement, the former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) said, “It is time to change the narrative of our politics”.

    Read full statement:

Having announced my aspiration to contest for election to the Office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on February 28, 2018, and faced in recent months with invitations from various political parties as potential platforms to contest the 2019 election for that high office, I thought carefully before making a choice.

I thought about why I have joined politics — the imperative of a radically new political leadership for Nigeria, one with a vision and the capacity to build a new and different future for our country. That meant almost automatically that I would not be part of the old order of failed and recycled politicians that have run our country aground with poverty, insecurity and corruption as our national legacy.

I also considered what I bring to this quest: love and passion for our country and its suffering masses, my leadership track record in nation-building as a senior official of the United Nations for 17 years, in economic management and economic thought as a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and as Professor of Practice in International Business and Public Policy at the prestigious Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in Massachusetts, USA, and my extensive experience and vast networks in international diplomacy and global business.

I therefore decided that I want to be part of a peaceful, democratic revolution that will usher in a new leadership and political order in our country.

Would the party I would join share my vision of leadership as one of service and accountability? Would it be focused on the youth and our future while inclusive in its membership? Would it be nation-wide in its spread and appeal as opposed to an ethnic or sectional focus? And would the party, from the standpoint of electoral strategy, be a viable platform with a structure to prosecute the struggle for a New Nigeria that is focused on the future and not the past?

Once I was done with thinking all this through, I knew I was ready — I knew I had to choose the Young Progressive Party. Because it answered my questions in the affirmative. The rest was detail, consultation, and a wide-ranging accumulation of data and information across the country and across a series of hard-nosed operatives, thinkers and doers.

The Young Progressive Party is a great dare, a tantalizing promise, a notice of evacuation to Nigeria’s recycled political class.

I weighed the case against casting my lot with this party. I heard some cynicism: ‘it hasn’t been done before’. And then I heard this: ‘Politicians will not take you seriously’.

As they will undoubtedly come to see, the cynics are on the wrong side of history. I want to be part of that army that proves our hopes right and our fears wrong. Great leaders often take their countries and their followers along uncharted waters. They arrive at successful transformations made possible by the will to BELIEVE in possibilities. That belief has to be backed by the courage to act on their convictions.

So I am here today to announce that in response to the parties of the past, in response to umbrellas that block out the light of hope, and brooms that sweep away truth and replace them with lies, in response to the parties of tired old tricks and tired old systems and tired old men, I and millions across Nigeria will choose the Young Progressive Party — YPP — the party of today and tomorrow.

This is, importantly, an organizational choice. The Young Progressive Party has over the past year set up full and final structures — extensive offices, with an extensive pool of party officials, operatives, volunteers across the country. This is a grassroots-oriented party. Matched with our historic network and cell leaders across Nigeria in every one of the 6 geo-political zones of the country, this is a union made in possibilities.

There is also the symbolism, and there is no more powerful symbol of the kind of campaign that we have chosen to run. Rather than cast my lot with those who have brought Nigeria to its knees, I choose to make a bold statement: I choose to cast my lot with the youth of Nigeria. Not just by words, but by action.

Ladies and gentlemen of our beloved country, our time has finally come.

Our excuses have finally met their match in action, our dreams have finally found expression, our energies have finally found a machine.

The time has come for you to stop complaining about Nigeria from your office canteen. The time has come for you to stop complaining about Nigeria from the comfort of your school hostel. The time has come for you. If you have been looking for a platform party with the machinery to disgrace those who believe Nigeria belongs to them, the Kingsley Moghalu Support Organization (KIMSO) and the Volunteers of our To Build a Nation (TBAN) Movement, together with the Young Progressive Party is the full and final answer to your question.

I need you. I need every single Nigerian of voting age to join this party. I need you who are tired of the way Nigeria is run to pick up a form and join this party. And then if you want to run for office — and you should, if you have the capacity — then I also need you to pick up a form and contest for office. We need those who want to shake up the House of Representatives, to shake up the House of Assembly and shake up our Local Government councils across Nigeria to join us now, and to work with us to execute our plans.

I chose this party because I want to inspire Nigerians to look to the future and not to the past. Without your help though, without your active involvement — without you choosing this very minute to go to www.yppnigeria.com.ng or a party location near you, pick up a form that you can fill in just 10 minutes, and join this party, then it will not happen.

This is not about me. This is not about the Young Progressive Party. This is not about my colleagues. This is not even about the presidency. This is about you. This is about changing the way politics is done in this country. This is about transforming the kinds of candidates and elections we have in this country. This is about dramatically increasing the quality of the hands and minds that stand for election and become your leaders.

Today, I have made a stand for Nigeria and for its future. And today I wait for you — to put your action where your mouth is. Now.

Not tomorrow. Not next time. Not later, fellow Nigerian, now.

Join me in the difficult work that stands ahead of us as we seek to contend with and then remake the political realities of this country and the path that we must take to show Nigerians that it is possible. It can be done.

    Let’s get to work.

  • Fani-Kayode to Pres. Buhari: Do not set Nigeria on fire

As the 2019 general elections draw near, former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to avoid any attempts by him or his cronies to rig the elections.

Fani-Kayode made this known in a statement on Thursday stressing, “Any attempt by Buhari to rig the 2019 elections with underage voters and falsification of results will be met with brutal and unrelenting force and resistance from the people”.

“Buhari, think hard before you rig and be ready to pay the price if u do. Do not set Nigeria on fire!” he urged the president.

Earlier, the former aviation minister had said President Buhari will fail in his bid to contest the 2019 presidential elections.

“Buhari has declared his intention to seek for a fresh mandate. He should prepare himself for the biggest demystification in Nigeria’s history.

“A man whose legacy is nothing but blood, death, destruction, corruption, division, conflict, failure and carnage wants to run. He will fail,” Fani-Kayode said.

Fani-Kayode’s comment on Buhari vs Obasanjo

Commenting on the battle between Buhari and former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Fani-Kayode narrated “Obasanjo was in power from 1976 to 1979. He did very well and he handed over power to a democratically elected government.

“Buhari toppled that government in 1983 and terrorised and killed Nigerians for 2 years until he himself was removed in a military coup by his colleagues in the army”.

He opined that the greatest mistake Obasanjo made in his democratic administration was not to prosecute and jail Buhari for looting Petroleum (Special) Trust Fund (PTF) funds during his regime as military Head of State.

“I saw the report and it was shocking,” Fani-Kayode said, adding, “Billions of dollars had vanished. Obasanjo summoned him and showed him the damning report. Buhari begged like a baby. Sadly Obasanjo let him off the hook”.

“Obasanjo was elected President in 1999 and remained in power till 2007. He did exceptionally well, repaired and strengthened our economy, built up our foreign reserves, paid off our foreign debts, restored our pride and reputation in the international community and so much more.

“Buhari was elected President in 2015 and divided the country, destroyed our economy, preached hatred, presided over genocide, stole money and hunted his perceived enemies like animals.

“Buhari is not 10 per cent of the man that Obasanjo is. When compared to Obasanjo, Buhari is nothing,” he further stated.

  • Ekiti PDP primaries: Delegates defy heavy downpour

Ekiti PDP primaries: Delegates defy heavy downpour

Delta State Governor and Chairman of Committee, Ifeanyi Okowa and delegates on Tuesday morning defied heavy downpour to attend the Ekiti State Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) primaries.

TheNewsGuru reports Governor Okowa and the 2,092 delegates defied the rains and stormed the venue set to conduct the Ekiti PDP Primary Election in Ado-Ekiti

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has said PDP will be going back to Aso Villa come 2019 Presidential elections.

A total of 2,092 delegates are expected to take part in the gubernatorial primary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to choose its flag bearer among the three contending candidates.

Out of this, there are 1,585 statutory delegates while elected national and ad-hoc delegates total 491.

The party has already appointed Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta state to head the primary election committee while its National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus is to head the primary appeals committee which will begin seating on Monday.

All members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party are also members of the appeals committee.

A total of 51 persons who had been elected as delegates from various local governments were withdrawn from the delegates’ list because they are government officials who did not resign their appointments before contesting.

But the party was unable to replace the withdrawn delegates because of the shortness of time.

National Publicity Secretary of the party, Kola Ologbondiyan, confirmed on Monday that all measures have been put in place to ensure a hitch-free congress, noting that all the aspirants have agreed to work together.

The aspirants are the current deputy governor of the state, Prof. Kolapo Eleka; former national spokesman of the party, Prince Dayo Adeyeye and serving Senator, Biodun Olujimi.

Ologbondiyan observed that the processes leading to primary were transparent, noting that this accounted for why nobody was complaining.

He was confident that the Congress will be peaceful as he pointed out that there will not be a repeat of the violence witnessed during the conduct of the Congress of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the state.

  • 2019: Buhari Campaign Organization inaugurates executives, office in Taraba

The Taraba chapter of the Buhari Campaign Organisation (BCO) on Sunday inaugurated its newly-elected officials and an office complex in Jalingo ahead of the 2019 election.

The National Coordinator of the organisation, Alhaji Bala Fasali, congratulated the officials and urged them to work tirelessly to realise the dream of ensuring re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari for the second term in office in 2019.

He expressed optimism that Buhari would get block votes in the state and the North East in general, considering the enormous successes recorded in the ongoing war against terrorism.

Fasali said that the ongoing Mambilla Hydro Power Project in the state was a pointer to the president’s commitment towards ensuring socio-economic development in the state and the country at large.

“The Mambilla Hydro Power Project is a gigantic project capable of providing power not only in Nigeria but to other West African countries, I assure you it will be completed on time to serve its purpose,” Fasali said.

He advised the officials to take their oath of office seriously and avoid betraying the trust reposed on them.

Earlier, the North East Coordinator of the organisation, Dr. Abiso Kabir, warned the officials against engaging in anti party activities, saying anyone found wanting would be penalised.

“You cannot be for Buhari and then work against the interest of our party.

“If you are with us, then you must work for all APC candidates from the top to the bottom,” Abiso said.

  • Another Buhari emerges for 2019 presidential race

Another Buhari, the initiator of Ahmed Buhari Youth Movement, has emerged to contest the 2019 presidential elections against sitting President Muhammadu Buhari, who is vying for second tenure.

The young 2019 presidential hopeful, Ahmed Buhari, now known as the new Buhari, is saying his interest in vying for the office of the president of Nigeria is informed by the need to have a generational change in the leadership of the nation.

New Buhari, who is a geologist by training, stated this while speaking with newsmen on Sunday in Ilorin on the sidelines of his meeting with members of the Ahmed B. Youth Movement in Kwara.

According to him, the youths have lost hope in the current system of governance which has created a wide gulf between the young and old generation, stressing that it was high time the young people participated in politics and governance of the country to avoid vacuum in government.

“Most importantly, our involvement is going to be an enlightenment to young people that it is true that we can do something.

“To let them know that the reason we are doing this is because we understand that if we do not allow responsibility to be transferred from one generation to next generation at the right time, a vacuum will be created.

“If this vacuum is created, a lot can go into that vacuum. It could be herdsmen; it could be Boko Haram; it could be kidnapping; it could be baby factory; it could be armed robbery, it could be a lot of things.

“It is because these young people do not feel any need for them to be looking up for something that hope is lost and so we are trying to revamp young people to understand that they have to participate in politics.

“While they participate in politics, they shouldn’t make money politics a front burner for them. They should be more concerned about how they will even support aspirants so that when they get to the office, those aspirants will be answerable to them.

“This will kill totally the whole idea of cabalism and see how we can have aspirants who will emerge and become answerable to those people who elected them because if you do support an aspirant, he is going to come back to you and support you, not by giving you the money you gave him, but by giving you the best of democracy.

“What we mean is that we want to have a country that would be formed on a united ground.

“ United ground in the sense that no matter where you come from, regardless of your ethnicity; regardless of your religion; regardless of your social status; regardless of your political party; ideological affiliations; regardless of gender; regardless of your age; you will want to be part of a new Nigeria.

“The new Nigeria that we are looking for is new Nigeria that every one of us would claim without mentioning where we are from.

“We want a new Nigeria where there won’t be a discussion on state of origin, quota system and all of those things that always tend to divide us will be eradicated,” he said.

  • 2019 elections will be tough, Oyegun warns APC

The National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, has warned his party against complacency, saying the 2019 general elections would be tough as Nigerians.

He, however, noted that the APC “is a living party,” adding that its leadership remained committed and dedicated “to make sure that this party is out in political fighting mood for the 2019 elections.”

The former governor of Edo State spoke during the inauguration of the APC 2018 National Convention Committee, which is headed by the Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Abubakar Baduru, in Abuja on Monday.

He urged the members of the committee to ensure that the outcome of the convention reunites APC members.

Odigie-Oyegun said, “I am passing the buck over to you today. At the end of this exercise, I want to see a re-united APC under whatever leadership your exercise brings up.

“We have a tough election ahead of us and we must prime ourselves for that election. We must not cuddle ourselves with any false sense of being the party in power.

“Our population today is much more aware of their rights than they have ever been before. So, as you proceed, please ensure that all these views and opinions are brought together into a one united APC.

“The task that you have undertaken to perform is a heavy and tough one. The APC is known, in spite of induced controversies, for the cleanest primaries and congresses.

“Our last presidential primary was by all account one of the best ever held and I dare say, anywhere.

“It was a convention that was watched worldwide and you are supposed to repeat the feat. I have no doubt that this one, given the controversies that have preceded it will also be a most watched convention.

“So, you have the task of producing a convention that is free, fair and provide a level playing field for anybody who wants to aspire to any position.”

On how prepared the APC was ahead of the 2019 general elections, Odigie-Oyegun said, “The signs are clear that this is a living party, the signs are clear that this is a vibrant party. The signs are clear that this is a party whose leadership is committed and dedicated, in spite of current event, to make sure that this party is out in a political fighting mood for the 2019 elections.”

The convention chairman assured the party leadership that his committee would give the contestants a level playing ground.

Badaru, who said President Muhammadu Buhari had no business running the government except for the care of the people, added that the APC’s mission was to rescue the country.

He said, “God is with us and He will continue to support us because of our clear vision, our good heart and our love for the people of Nigeria. We all know that our leader has no business in running this government except for the care of our people.

“Most of us you see in the APC are in the party today to serve our people. Our mission in the APC is to rescue the country from near collapse we saw around 2014 and 2015.”

  • JUST IN: Why I accepted to serve – Festus Keyamo [Full acceptance attached]

Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Festus Keyamo, who was recently appointed to serve as director and spokesman for President Muhammadu Buhari 2019 presidential campaign has stated why he accepted the offer.

TheNewsGuru reports Keyamo was appointed the Director of Strategic Communications and as the Official Spokesperson of the President Muhammadu Buhari Campaign Organization, which has Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi as its Director General.

“Let me put it on record that I was indeed consulted before the announcement. Upon the offer, I wholeheartedly and proudly accepted the challenge to do this for the good of my country and for posterity,” Keyamo said in a lengthy statement accepting the appointment.

    Read the full statement below:

Just yesterday, my appointment as the Director, Strategic Communications of President Muhammadu Buhari Campaign Organisation was made public. In that capacity, I would be the Official Spokesperson of the President’s campaigns for the 2019 Presidential Election.

Let me put it on record that I was indeed consulted before the announcement. Upon the offer, I wholeheartedly and proudly accepted the challenge to do this for the good of my country and for posterity. For in President Buhari I have found an approximation of the lofty values I cherish and have fought for all my life.

I know millions of Nigerians have never seen me in the mould of partisan politics. This is because for the past two and half decades, I have been under intense public scrutiny while engaging successive governments (military and civilian) in the most critical way possible. The public has also watched me grow steadily all the way from that young, restless lawyer to the exalted position of a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). In the process of my restless and relentless engagements of the authorities, I have been hounded, arrested, detained, paraded like a criminal, charged and discharged from courts severally, but remain unbowed. Hence, some of us have been branded as “radicals” and seen as completely apolitical.

However, the ultimate aim of every struggle is not really to enthrone a perfect, flawless system. Only the starry-eyed, younger ones think such is possible. That is Utopia. Rather, the ultimate aim of the struggle is to enthrone a government (yes, even with the normal human flaws) that is focused, determined and fiercely opposed to the unscrupulous wheeler-dealers in the society, committed to protecting the interests of the down-trodden, the weak and vulnerable.

One of the obvious ways to do this is to ensure that what belongs to all is not cornered by a few; and if they do so, to ensure that they are made to account and brought to justice. I can boldly say that no Government in the history of Nigeria has recovered so much looted funds as that of President Muhammadu Buhari. The fact that this Government has clearly chosen this path in protecting the masses of our country (as unpleasant as it has been to some) is one of the many reasons why I am so proud and bold about my support for the re-election bid of President Muhammadu Buhari.

In doing this, I take a cue from my revered late boss, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, SAN who mentored me. Throughout his career, he also consistently and fiercely engaged every government in Nigeria and suffered as a result. Guess what? THE ONLY GOVERNMENT HE FULLY SUPPORTED THROUGHOUT HIS LIFETIME was that led by General Muhammdu Buhari in 1984 – 1985; and that was to the chagrin of some of his professional colleagues and fellow “radicals”. However, he saw what they did not see at that time, because when that government was overthrown by General Babangida, what followed was the worst era in our history in terms of institutionalizing corruption and political chicanery in Nigeria.

In the 2007 Presidential election, my late boss again endorsed General Buhari in the following words: “When we talk of anti-corruption war, there is no way you will exclude General Buhari. I don’t want to hear what a political party is going to do, whether ANPP or PDP or NDP or which other political organization. Tell me who is leading the party, tell me who is leading the government, that’s my concern. It’s a matter of leadership. This is a serious election, very serious one”.

Some of those same forces and interests that saw the back of General Buhari in 1985 are still very much around with us. You can hear their voices getting louder of late, preaching hate and toiling hard to incite the people against the President. They want us to go back to our old ways, disguised as if they genuinely care for the masses of this country. When you look at the profile and ignoble antecedents of these characters – the emergency heroes, some of us have no option but to undertake this role we have been called upon to assume just to ensure that they do not succeed in their selfish enterprise.

For all I have said above, my convictions about this job are deep and well thought-out. Given my background, it is clear that I cannot be a sycophantic rabble-rouser, looking for some personal gains. Having reached the top echelon of my career, some of us can conveniently stay away from all these, and continue to earn a good living from our thriving law practice. However, the call of duty beckons because we are at a critical crossroads in our history where one wrong turn may take us back to the sorry state from which we are emerging. We are here to convince and appeal to the masses not to allow us take that wrong turn.

Now, it is important I elaborate a bit on this “sorry state” from which we are coming. Some people always attempt to befuddle the issues by continually reminding us of certain statistics that existed before 2015 and after 2015. However, our situation before 2015 is comparable to that of a car on a high speed, seemingly doing well on the road, but with the temperature gauge already rising. That car is in trouble. But to the uninformed, the car would be seen as doing well.

However, the callous driver, fully aware of the rising temperature in the engine, continues to speed on. After some time, it is inevitable that the engine of the car would overheat and crash. In that state, the callous driver hands over the car to the new driver. The new driver, seeing the condition of the vehicle, decides to fix the radiator first which is responsible for the overheating in order to protect the engine, before setting out on the road again. Yet, the callous driver mischievously calls everyone to come and see how the new driver has parked the car to fix the engine before setting out once again. The callous driver tells everyone that the new driver is clueless; that that is why the car was parked briefly.

The above anecdote is a graphic reflection of the situation we find ourselves. With the crash in oil prices just before 2015, the previous government resorted to borrowing to pay salaries and recklessly drew down on our foreign reserves, just to give the impression that all was well. So much unearned money was also circulating in the country amongst a few, giving the false impression that we were in a buoyant economy. However, the economy was headed for a crash. All the indices show that the slip into recession started shortly before this government took over, like the car which engine was already over-heating.

The attempt by a few to deceive the people that all was well with us before this government took over, is one of the reasons some of us have decided to come out of our shells to put a hole in that false narrative. It is simply a big lie. I am persuaded that the Buhari Government took the right measures to halt a bigger disaster awaiting our economy had it been otherwise. Those who are persuaded otherwise are within their legitimate right to do so. We are all patriots, trying to find the right answers to our problems as a nation. However, if you are persuaded otherwise, kindly state in details what exactly should have been done to run the economy better, given the crash in oil prices and production that dropped to around 700,000 barrels per day. Surely, discerning Nigerians would no longer buy the fable of “Buhari destroyed our economy”.

If I voted Buhari in 2015 and I am to vote for him again in 2019, then why can’t I campaign vigorously for him? I see no reason. It is a fallacy to say you are neutral in politics, yet you step forward to cast your vote at elections. If you are persuaded enough to vote for a candidate of your choice, then you must also be persuaded enough to campaign for that candidate, because your vote would be lost if you do not convince others to also adopt your position.

That is why I have made my choice for 2019 and I will publicly stand by it. That choice is President Muhammadu Buhari. For those who are persuaded otherwise, I challenge them to also name their choices because you cannot criticise my choice of a candidate without naming your own choice. After all, the President would not be running against ghosts or against a vacuum. Therefore, this is not a time to hide behind a blanket criticism of any candidate. Each candidate should be assessed in comparative terms with other candidates.

There has also been much attempt to de-market the President using his age and health as pummeling tools, and as such raising the decibel in the clarion call for a young or younger President.

Firstly, on the issues of age and health, it would be ungodly and outrageous for a mere mortal to assume the status of God Almighty to speculate on the longevity or strength of any human being. Even doctors have been proven wrong on so many occasions. It is a matter entirely in the hands of God. Our past Presidents that died in office (Abacha and Yar’Adua) were in their prime. In fact, Abacha did not even show any sign of a failing health before he slumped and died. In Zimbabwe, the main opposition candidate for years, Morgan Tsvangirai used the issue of age and health to campaign against President Mugabe, urging him to go and retire and rest. Yet, just a few weeks ago, Morgan Tsvangirai died at the age of 65 and Mugabe is still alive and kicking at the age of 94. Those are the mysterious ways of God Almighty. No human being should even use that as a campaign gimmick. That person would be courting the wrath of God Almighty.

In addition, no one can argue that age has anything to do with the required integrity to be the President of a country. I also firmly believe that our value systems in politics and the society have been so damaged pre-2015, that a firm and experienced hand is needed to reset our collective psyche before we can set sail again. The notion that public office is just available to share money which was the norm pre-2015 is gradually being changed. Spending a few more years to sustain that kind of re-orientation will do us a world of good. President Buhari is one of the very last of the upright Mohicans in Nigeria available to help reclaim public integrity before he takes his bow in 2023, if the Nigerian people so wish. We must take advantage of his still being around to deepen the nation’s moral fabric.

The choices before us have never been so CLEAR in the history of our country. On the one hand are those who are already in the mud and seeking to drag others into the mud. These are the ones who keep saying “We are all corrupt together”, and who keep confessing and apologising like people coming out of a trance. They say they should be forgiven because they have been “honest” enough to confess and apologise. Fellow Nigerians, there is nothing like an honest thief. It is a disgusting oxymoron. A thief is a thief. This is especially so if the thief did not willingly come out to admit he was a thief until his hands were caught right inside the cookie jar.

The other choice before us is a President who has been accused of everything that is false but even his most ardent critics, and detractors locally and internationally have not accused him of having a penchant for wealth accumulation. I am persuaded to campaign for him by his austere lifestyle, his Spartan taste and frugal nature. I am not looking for a god or an angel to vote for. They are not around here on earth. I am only looking for someone with these minimum personal qualities I have enumerated above. The President’s other human flaws may be there, but I am waiting for the candidates of our opponents to show me their credentials from heaven.

People can easily point to those with questionable past in the ruling party, the APC. With my antecedents and in my true conscience, I cannot defend them and cannot make excuses for them. However, in joining the President’s party, they are subjecting themselves to the disciplined leadership of the President. Like Chief Gani Fawehinmi, SAN said above, it is the leadership that matters. Like I always ask: should we all stop going to church because some known sinners also throng to churches every Sunday? The obvious answer is in the negative. On the other hand, the other party whose key leaders were all part of those who pilfered our commonwealth are about to present us with one amongst themselves as a Presidential candidate in 2019. Of course, reasonable Nigerians are waiting to dismiss that before it happens.

However, for some of my friends, colleagues and associates who are still persuaded by the other way of running our country, and who belong to different political platforms, all I can do is to wish them well, but also state that this is a time for us to agree to disagree. It is all for the good of our country. It will bring out the best in us in canvassing our persuasions. However, I will be putting my heart and soul to this assignment and if anyone is offended by my commitment to the cause, I offer no apology. You can also do likewise to advance your cause. Nigerians would decide at the end of the day.

My message to all those teeming supporters who did it in 2015 for our President is that you do not abandon a ship with which you set sail midway. Our race is not a 100-meter dash. It is a marathon race to rescue our country. We are almost there. When we turn the corner in 2019, you will see the tape at the finishing line. We must not run out of breaths. We believed in 2015. We must keep that belief alive. The hallmark of true supporters is to stand firm in times of storm and in times of calm. The storm is almost over. The President has battled to take control of the steering wheel of the nation and we are on course.

Do not let the naysayers bully you whether in real life or in cyberspaces. When they run out of arguments, they resort to abuses. If they abuse you, see them as patriots, but misguided ones; if they attack you, see them as patriots, but misguided ones; if they call you unprintable names, see them as passionate patriots, but misguided ones. Do not retaliate. With time, especially when majority of votes wipe out their minority opinions in 2019, they will come round to you and acknowledge your vision. So, hold your own and keep your heads up.

For us, this race is never a do-or-die affair. We shall present the facts as we see them and let Nigerians decide. We do not have to hire Cambridge Analytica to scare the electorate. They are already sufficiently scared by the humongous corruption that took place under the watch of the last government; the electorate are already sufficiently scared by those who are apologizing just to sneak their way back to power; the electorate are also sufficiently scared by the tons of cash buried in graveyards, farm houses, luxury flats in Ikoyi, in Yachts in the High Seas and those used to buy real estate strewn all over the world.

Nigerians know from where their problems came. They know it is not President Buhari. They know it came from some of those battling tooth and nail to displace him. Those who are persuaded by us should not remain aloof, please. Kindly join us in this journey.

    Thank you.

  • Appointment: Festus Keyamo delays official statement as Nigerians react

Festus Keyamo has delayed official statements on his recent appointment as director and spokesman for President Muhammadu Buhari 2019 presidential campaigns to a “much later” date.

“I will be making a formal statement on this much later,” the Senior Advocate of Nigeria stated alongside other comments announcing his appointment.

TheNewsGuru reports Keyamo was appointed the Director of Strategic Communications and as the Official Spokesperson of the President Muhammadu Buhari Campaign Organization, which has Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi as its Director General.

As part of Keyamo’s duties in his new post in the Buhari’s campaign organization, he will aid in getting the nomination of Buhari as the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential flagbearer in the 2019 elections.

He will also serve to ensure the success of the subsequent campaigns for the 2019 presidential election.

“In your capacity, you are to be the Spokesperson for the Campaign during the nomination process and also at the subsequent campaigns for the 2019 presidential elections,” the letter appointing Keyamo read.

However, mixed reactions have surrounded Keyamo’s appointment with certain Nigerians questioning the appointment.

“Ohh. That was your motive all the while? We already knew though so this news is stale. The rest of us have been appointed the spokespersons of the Nigerians. We will see who will prevail,” Nwaegbe Nkem stated on Twitter.

The development was made public by the president’s personal assistant on new media, Bashir Ahmad and confirmed by Kaduna State Governor, Nasir Ahmad el-Rufai.

Ahmad took to his Twitter handle, @BashirAhmaad, to announce the development on Monday, April 9.
