  • APC accuses Gov. Dickson of using thugs to undermine elections in Bayelsa

APC accuses Gov. Dickson of using thugs to undermine elections in Bayelsa

The All Progressives Congress (APC), Bayelsa State Chapter, has alleged the use of thugs and other criminal elements by Governor Seriake Dickson and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state to undermine Saturday’s House of Assembly elections.

APC State Publicity Secretary, Mr. Doifie Buokoribo, said in a statement on Saturday in Okpoama-Brass that armed thugs loyal to the governor and his party were on the loose in a number of communities throughout the polls, rigging for the PDP and intimidating APC members.

The statement reads, “Just on Thursday, we alerted the Bayelsa public to an evil plot by Governor Seriake Dickson to unleash mayhem during Saturday’s governorship and House of Assembly elections on purpose to intimidate the opposition and impose his candidates in various constituencies of the state.

“We also warned about his signature tactic of trying to cover up his nefarious acts with smear campaign and fake news against our party, the All Progressives Congress (APC). Dickson, as usual, did not disappoint.

“On Saturday, thugs sponsored by Dickson and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state went on the rampage in several constituencies of the state, carting away electoral materials, thumb-printing for the PDP, and deploying sundry acts of intimidation against APC members and others opposed the governor and his party.

“A few of the instances would suffice. Bayelsa State PDP Chairman, Mr. Moses Cliopas, and other PDP leaders, accompanied by armed thugs hijacked all the electoral materials for Saturday’s election in Wards 16 and 17 of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.

“It took the intervention of the armed and security forces for the materials to be recovered, and some arrests were made.

“In Odioma, Brass Local Government Area, the PDP candidate, Barrister Esau Andrew, led thugs to cart away all the electoral materials. Our members were chased out of the community and PDP had a field day with the thumb printing of ballot papers.

“Odioma is Dickson’s surrogate community. In Brass Constituency 2, Dickson imposed the PDP candidate, Andrew, and he is desperate to ensure his candidates wins. Dickson also used to be a lawyer for this community.

“In Ogbolomabiri-Nembe, the hometown of the deputy governor, his younger brother, Gabriel Jonah, used thugs to threaten and chase APC agents out of the community.

“In Sagbama, where Dickson comes from, our members were in hiding for the most part of Saturday for fear of being harmed by the governor and his armed thugs.

“Quite in his usual style, Dickson went to town on Saturday on a campaign of falsehood, alleging malpractices by our party and pretending to be the victim. While voting was still going on is several areas, he was out and about with his usual fake news to try to divert attention from his immoral ways.

“APC wishes to restate that elections are not fought on the basis of smear campaign or intimidation, but on the strength of support freely given by the people. This is our strength, it is what APC boasts. Dickson is, certainly, in terrible deficit of such support, and he is doing everything to make up for his lack of quality followership. But he will surely be disappointed.”

  • Governorship poll: Uduaghan hopeful of APC victory in Delta

Governorship poll: Uduaghan hopeful of APC victory in Delta

Former Delta Governor, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan, on Saturday expressed optimism that the All Progressives Congress (APC) would emerge victorious in the Saturday’s governorship and assembly elections.

Uduaghan said this shortly after he cast his vote at about 12:05 a.m. in his hometown, Abigborodo in Warri North Local Government Area of Delta.

‘‘We are optimistic of winning the election but let me get the reports first because I don’t know what is happening in other areas.

‘‘I do not know whether people are behaving or misbehaving or there are security challenges in other areas. So, it is difficult to give verdict but I am optimistic,’’ he said.

Uduaghan commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the early arrival of voting materials in Abigborodo

On the security beefed up in Sapele, the former governor said it might not be unconnected with the violence in the last Presidential and National Assembly elections in which two persons were allegedly killed.

‘‘I think the security is tighter in these elections because of what happened in the previous elections.

‘‘The security agencies usually evaluate what is on ground based on information and of course, intelligence report.

‘‘So, maybe the security arrangement this time was because of the previous experience,’’ he said.

Uduaghan, however, expressed joy at the turnout of voters.

  • Breaking: Police arrest 2 in Edo over electoral violence

The Police have arrested two persons in Edo over alleged electoral violence during Saturday’s state House of Assembly poll.

DPO Jimoh Salau, Police Divisional Officer in Ologbo, disclosed this while receiving members of the state Inter Agency Consultative Committee on Elections led by the state’s Commissioner of Police Danmallam Mohammed in Benin.

Salau said the suspects were arrested for allegedly holding INEC officials hostage and attempting to destroy electoral materials, a process that would have disrupted the officials from carrying out their electoral duties in unit 7 of the ward.

Responding, Mohammed adjudged the election as generally peaceful.

He noted that in spite of some challenges, the process was largely peaceful and commended residents for conducting themselves in orderly manner.

“The police have commenced investigations into the violence and more arrest will be made as the police will not shield anyone involved in perpetrating violence before, during and after the election,” he said.

While commending other security agencies for their support in ensuring free and peaceful conduct of the election, he emphasised on the need to sustain the synergy between security agencies even after the elections.

  • Gov. Emmanuel, ex-Minister speak on conduct of elections in Akwa Ibom

Gov. Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom has commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for overcoming the card reader challenge that marred the Feb. 23, Presidential and National Assembly elections.

Emmanuel, who is seeking a second term tenure on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said INEC had improved in the use of the card reader during the Governorship/ Houses of Assembly elections in the state.

He made this known on Saturday while interacting with Newsmen in Onna Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom.

He said: “kudos to INEC for improving on the card reader system for clarification and authentication processes.

“I want to appreciate the Akwa Ibom people for coming out early today to cast their votes and to patiently wait for counting to begin.

“I think the accreditation and commencement of voting was early, so far so good, the authentication is a bit better today too, compared to the Feb. 23rd presidential/NASS polls.”

Meanwhile, Mr Nsima Ekere, the All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship Candidate has called on INEC to cancel the result of any polling unit where there was violence or hijacking of materials.

Ekere made this known shortly after he exercised his civic right at Edemeya ward 1, unit 004, Ikot Abasi Local government Area of Akwa Ibom State, around 10:49 am.

The APC candidate, who lamented the late arrival of election materials at his unit, also appealed to INEC to extend the period of voting in areas which had the same challenge.

“INEC should cancel election process anywhere there is violence or hijacking of materials.

“The election generally is peaceful, but it is unfortunate that materials arrived here late.

“INEC should make up for the delay by extending voting time anywhere we have such delays,” Ekere said.

He expressed hope that the APC would emerge victorious at the polls.

Also, Chief Nduese Essien, a former Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, has lauded INEC for the smooth conduct of Saturday’s elections in the State.

Essien, a two term member of the House of Representatives, gave the commendation while speaking with newsmen in Ward 2, Ntaisip unit, Eket Local Government Area of the state.

He said that the commission had done well in terms of time.

“In terms of conduct of INEC staff, they have done very well and that can be ascribed to the Akwa Ibom REC, Mr Mike Ogini,” he said.

“I have found the atmosphere very conducive, peaceful and no controversies, the turnout is very impressive more than what we had in Feb. 23rd presidential/NASS polls because people are more relaxed to vote whom they want,” Essien said.

He attributed the massive turn out of voters to awareness amongst the people of the area.

He noted that the elections were now more orderly than it used to be because of the introduction of card readers and the Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs.)

“That is why I begin to wonder why people will begin to think of snatching ballot boxes because snatched ballot boxes can not be returned to INEC office,” he said.

He said that “when Nigerians realise that there is no need for snatching ballot boxes, that is when we will have good elections in the country,” he said.

Essien alleged that the opposition wanted to create violence as a way of postponing the elections.

“Most of the plans they made are thwarted before today and thugs that they brought were arrested and the arrangement failed,” he alleged.
