  • Insecurity: We are prepared for 2019 polls – IG

The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, affirmed on Thursday the Force was well prepared for the 2019 general elections.

Idris stated this during a chat with journalists in Lagos after the public presentation of his book, Security and Justice: The Pathway for Peace and Reconciliation in Nigeria.

He said: “We are prepared for the elections. We have the men and we have the materials (logistics) to carry out our duties before, during and after the elections successfully.”

According to the IGP, there was need for justice and reconciliation in order to enthrone meaningful development.

Idris noted that security challenges across the country could be contained if Nigerians pursued true reconciliation and shunned inflammatory comments.

Idris added: “The challenges we are having with this herdsmen have gone down. In Benue, we have 15 units on ground and I have been monitoring their successes.

I was in Benue and we have been having stakeholders’ meeting and we have been discussing.

Based on that, people have been coming openly to state their problems and it is through that we can understand each other and reconcile our differences.

The role of traditional rulers in this reconciliation process cannot be over emphasised because most of them have the ears of their people. When you have political disagreement in these communities, these traditional rulers are handy.”

Dedicating his book to officers and men of the police, Idris said proceeds from its sale would be used to fund the security and justice initiative, a foundation being established for the promotion of peace, security and reconciliation in Nigeria.

On why he wrote the book, the IGP said: “My experience as a police officer over the years in Nigeria, with the United Nations headquarters in New York, peace keeping operations in other countries and above all as the IGP has taught me that internal peace is a pivotal element for instituting and sustaining democratic government.

That justice is most needed as an instrument of reconciliation and conflict management and that the role of the judiciary and security agencies in dispensing justice is imperative in ensuring peace in any country.

I have watched with troubled heart the security challenges confronting this country. The challenges of Boko Haram in the North East, kidnappings and armed robberies, cattle rustling and militancy in virtually all parts of Nigeria.”

  • Why Nigerians must re-elect Buhari in 2019 – Yahaya Bello

Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State has pleaded with Nigerians to re-elect President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019, saying his re-election is in “the best interest of Nigerians”.

The governor, who spoke through a statement by his Director General on Media and Publicity, Kingsley Fanwo, said the country is witnessing progress under the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government.

According to him, it is taking a lot of efforts to “rescue the country from the deep pit of economic mess” which previous administrations put it.

The statement reads: “We were here during the previous administration, and we saw what our country went through. Revelations in courts and from anti-graft agencies have shown us how bad the country was exposed to economic woes.

President Muhammadu Buhari came and has continued to do his best to sanitise the country and relaunch it on the map of international reckoning.

It takes more time to rebuild than to destroy. For our President to have achieved this much is magical and laudable. In the interest of Nigeria and Nigerians, President Buhari should continue to lead our country beyond 2019”.

Governor Bello said those opposed to Buhari’s re-election were only “exercising their fundamental right to freedom of expression”.

According to him, they are not “necessarily speaking the minds of millions of Nigerians who were at the receiving end of bad governance, corruption and terrorism before the rescue mission of President Muhammadu Buhari”.

He added: “Anybody is free to form associations to pursue interests, provided the associations are not injurious to the laws of the land. Anyone is free to air his or her views; that remains one of the beautiful gains of our Government of Change.

In the recent past, airing such views, even within the space of our democratic dispensation, was considered an affront on the country. Today, fundamental rights are freely exercised.

However, Nigerians have continued to show their solidarity with the President. He will easily win again in 2019”.

Bello called for prayers for Nigeria to continue to live in peace and harmony.

  • BREAKING NEWS: Retire for a younger president in 2019, IBB tells Buhari

BREAKING NEWS: Retire for a younger president in 2019, IBB tells Buhari

Sequel to former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s recent open letter to President Muhammadu asking him (Buhari) to step down in 2019, ex-Military President, Ibrahim Babangida has also advised the president to retire in 2019 to allow for the emergence of a younger leader.

He asked Buhari to complete his first term and allow a new generation of leaders to take control of the affiars of the nation.

Babangida gave the advice in a statement in Abuja through his media aide, Prince Kassim Afegbua.

He said: “In the fullness of our present realities, we need to cooperate with President Muhammadu Buhari to complete his term of office on May 29th, 2019 and collectively prepare the way for new generation leaders to assume the mantle of leadership of the country.

While offering this advice, I speak as a stakeholder, former president, concerned Nigerian and a patriot who desires to see new paradigms in our shared commitment to get this country running. While saying this also, I do not intend to deny President Buhari his inalienable right to vote and be voted for, but there comes a time in the life of a nation, when personal ambition should not override national interest.”

2019: Kingibe distances self from campaign posters, declares loyalty to Buhari

Babagana Kingibe, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, has distanced himself from posters of him in circulation for 2019 presidency.

The former SGF said he is not interested in taking the job of President Muhammadu Buhari, come 2019.

Posters of Kingibe allegedly declaring his intention to run for presidency appeared in Abuja and Lagos recently.

Reacting to the posters in circulation, Kingibe said, “I am experienced enough in politics to know that you do not start a political campaign with posters without talking to anyone about your ambition.

“My attention has been drawn to the posters being circulated in some cities across the country purporting that I am campaigning to be President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the 2019 elections. I want to state clearly that I know nothing about the posters.

They were neither produced nor authorised by me. I do not know how the posters came about and I know nothing about how they were circulated in those cities. I am experienced enough in politics to know that you do not start a political campaign with posters without talking to anyone about your ambition.

“In any case, I want to state very clearly that I DO NOT have the intention or the desire to contest for any elective post in 2019 or thereafter.

I am fully in support of President Muhammadu Buhari and his policies, which I believe will rescue Nigeria from accumulated decay, loss of moral compass and leadership failure. I fervently believe that Nigeria is safe in President Buhari’s hands and he needs to complete and build upon the solid foundations that he is laying.

2019: INEC to announce results electronically

Independent National Electoral Commission says apart from giving physical copies of results of the 2019 elections to party agents, it will also be announcing the results electronically.

INEC, therefore, called on telecoms service providers to assist the commission.

The Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said this when he visited the Executive Vice-Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission, Prof. Umar Danbatta, in Abuja on Tuesday.

He said the same mechanism would be used in the Ekiti and Osun governorship elections in July and September, respectively.

Yakubu said, “We are planning for full deployment (of electronic and manual transmission) this year in governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun. Thereafter we intend to deploy the system in the 2019 general elections.

“INEC has developed the hardware and software. However, we rely on the operators for the transmission of both the figures and scanned images of result sheets. We wish to assure Nigerians that while we transmit the raw figures from polling units, scanned images of the result sheets will also be transmitted electronically in addition to physical copies given to party agents at polling units.”

Yakubu appealed to the NCC as the regulator to facilitate a meeting between INEC and the telecommunications operators with the aim of assisting the electoral body in the conduct of the election.

The INEC boss added, “Similarly, we would like the NCC to facilitate discussions with operators on ways of enhancing their corporate social responsibility to Nigeria’s electoral process. An immediate area of interest to INEC is how the operators can help in voter education and publicity.

“Towards the 2019 general elections, we would like the operators in collaboration with INEC, to send bulk SMS and possibly voice messages as well on the imperative of peaceful elections, the collection of Permanent Voter Cards by registered voters and directional information on the location of polling units for easy access to voters.”

In his response, the Executive Vice-Chairman of the NCC said his agency would try to help the electoral body to ensure that the 2019 elections are free, fair and credible.

Dabatta said the NCC would try to improve the security of the communications system before the 2019 election so that it would be effective for the dissemination of election results.

  • Political parties too many, may cause problems in 2019 –INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission says the growing number of political parties may pose challenges for the commission in the 2019 general elections.

The Chief Technical Adviser to the INEC Chairman, Prof. Bolade Eyinla, said this in Abuja on Monday at a retreat organised by the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru.

While delivering a keynote address at the event, which was titled, ‘The Dynamics of Managing Political Parties Professionally,’ Eyinla said so far, 68 political parties had been registered.

Eyinla, who represented INEC, said with over 100 political associations seeking registration, the number might increase before the elections which could cause logistical problems, including the production of ballot papers.

The INEC official said if 68 parties participated in the elections, it could also mean that a total of 68 party agents would be at each polling unit, which could cause the elections to be rowdy.

“Currently there are 68 registered political parties in Nigeria. As of today, there are more than 100 associations that have applied to INEC to register as political parties. This raises a number of questions which we want this retreat to address,” he said.

Eyinla further stated that he did not know whether INEC would be able to monitor the congresses, conventions and primaries of all parties contesting over 1,000 elective positions each across the nation.

He added, “We are also going to be challenged if these 68 political parties and counting continue this way. We are just a commission. I cannot begin to imagine even as the technical adviser, how we will divide ourselves to monitor party conventions and primaries of 68 political parties across the length and breadth of this country.

“Already we have envisaged some of these challenges and we are coming up with strategies to deal with them in our election project plan.

“Ancillary to this is the fact that political party agents will also increase. I can imagine 68 political party agents in a polling unit. I think these are issues that we have to manage; but most importantly, how do we manage the ballot for 68 political parties?”

Eyinla said if any registered political party is mistakenly omitted from the ballot paper, it could lead to the total cancellation of the exercise.

The INEC official said, “I think perhaps one of the largest ballots that I have seen is that of Afghanistan where the ballot paper is nearly the size of a prayer mat.

“Given our level of literacy, I think that is going to be a major challenge and as we know, the question of exclusion is a major issue in the electoral process.

“The chairman was literally sleeping and waking with the ballot for Anambra State election to ensure that no party was excluded; to ensure that the names and logo of the parties were correct because any slip could nullify the election. So, I think there is a challenge with managing the ballot that will come with the increasing number of political parties.”

The INEC official called on the National Assembly to make necessary changes to the electoral legal framework before July, saying doing so less than six months to the elections would be in contravention of ECOWAS protocol on democracy.

In his address, however, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, said the multiplicity of political parties was good for democracy.

Saraki, who was represented by Senator Abdullahi Sabi, called on political parties to ensure that neglected groups, including women and persons living with disabilities, were integrated into party structures.

In his remarks, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, said there was a need for parties to have ideologies as this would strengthen democracy and engender good governance.

  • Buhari remains best choice in 2019 – APC chieftain

Alhaji Abubakar Ma’aji, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Niger says President Muhammadu Buhari remains the only credible choice in the 2019 general elections.

Ma’aji, who made the assertion in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna, said the choice in 2019 would be between credibility and return to years of massive corruption and insecurity.

According to him, the electorates should vote for continuity in order to consolidate on ongoing changes in the country that would set the nation on the path of progress.

“President Buhari has proved beyond reasonable doubt to be honest, sincere and committed to the yearnings and aspirations of Nigerians irrespective of political, tribal and ethnic differences,” he said.

Ma’aji lauded President Buhari for his commitment in the fight against corruption, militancy, cattle rustling and Boko Haram.

According to him, the profile of Nigeria has risen high since Buhari assumed duty, because of the high regard the international community has for him.

“The nation’s credibility before the international community has improved and that would attract more foreign investors to boost our economy.

“The President’s track record of real integrity was purely responsible for foreign nations positive disposition to assist in revamping our economic, security and anti-corruption initiatives,” he said.

“What the country needs at this material time is a peaceful atmosphere for which the Federal government is committed to,” he added.

Ma’aji called on politicians to play responsible politics and shun all kinds of political violence and thuggery for peace, progress and political growth of the country.

  • 2019: We’ll do everything possible to ensure Buhari is reelected – Presidential aide

Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Justice Reform, Juliet Ibekaku-Nwagwu, has vowed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) will leave no stone unturned for the re-election of President Buhari in 2019.

Ibekaku-Nwagwu made the vow in Awgu Local Government of Enugu on Sunday during a voter education organised by the Women and Youths Wings of the party.

Flagging off the exercise tagged `Operation Show Your Voters Card’, Ms. Ibekaku-Nwagwu said that the South-East would deliver bloc votes to APC candidates come 2019 General Elections.

We want President Buhari to continue in 2019 and that is why we want to start early to work hard to mobilize our people and prepare their minds for the election ahead.

South-East especially Enugu State must be sincere enough to appreciate the timely intervention of the Buhari-led administration on Enugu-Onitsha and Enugu-Port Harcourt Roads.

These strategic roads were abysmally neglected by the past administrations for more than 15 years even with the retinue of officials and political appointees from South-East who served in those governments,’’ she said.

The presidential aide urged the people of the zone to support Mr. Buhari in 2019 to have a chance of producing the President in 2023 as well.

Also speaking, the Deputy National Women Leader of APC, Tina Adike, said the South-East and Enugu State APC had already endorsed President Buhari for second term.

Ms. Adike urged the electorate to endeavour to get their voter’s cards as it was the only way to achieve the objective.

In his remarks, the Acting Secretary of the party in the state, Linus Okolo, said that with the current voters and membership mobilization drive of the party, the APC would definitely take over power in Enugu State come 2019.

A chieftain of APC in Enugu West Senatorial Zone, Ben Eche, said that “Operation Show Your Voters Card’’ would be felt in all parts of the state for the people to know that the party had come to liberate them from over16 years of PDP maladministration.

Mr. Eche regretted that many communities in the state lack rural roads, potable water and other social amenities that support community growth and urged the people to get their cards and vote candidates of their choice.

In a welcome address, APC Enugu State Women Leader, Queen Nwankwo, said that the statewide sensitization would be far-reaching as the party had fully mobilized funds and man-power for it.

As this 2019 General Elections time table is out, we encourage our women and youths to make sure that they obtain their Permanent Voters Card (PVC) because that is our strength,’’ Mr. Nwankwo said.

The state APC Youth Leader, Ikenna Oloto, appreciated the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, for supporting and motivating the youths’ wing for the exercise.

We are going to take this sensitization on the need to have voters’ cards door-to-door in the entire state and ensure that youths come out to vote en mass for the ruling party, where their future is greatly assured,’’ Mr. Oloto said.

  • 2019: ‘Support Buhari’s re-election bid to pave way for Igbo presidency’ SGF woos S/East

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr. Boss Mustapha, has beckoned on the people of the South-East to support the re-election bid of President Muhammadu Buhari, declaring that a second term mandate for the President will pave way for the actualization of the South East’s dream to produce a President in Nigeria.

Mustapha made the declaration at a dinner organised by business mogul and former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu in honour of Mrs. Georgina Ehuria, Permanent Secretary, Cabinet Office, Presidential Villa, Abuja.

In what could be described as an affirmation that Buhari would participate in the 2019 presidential election in spite of the groundswell of opinion against him, Mustapha said Nigeria was a complex nation and any person or group aspiring to lead the country must do so through negotiation and compromise.

The SGF, who was responding to Kalu’s pledge that the South-East will give at least 75 per cent of its votes to President Buhari if he decides to run for a second term in office, said the Igbo will fare better in the political equation by voting massively for the incumbent president in 2019.

“You made allusions to the fact that the South-East would support Buhari. Let me confirm to you that for any thought of Igbo presidency, this is the shortest part. I have been in this game in the last 35, 37 years. I can attest to it. I know what it is, I know the permutations. I know what is on ground and I am an election manager. I know how you can commute, how you can fix the figures and how they come and arrive at the destination. “I can tell you without any fear, without any iota of doubt that the shortest path to an Igbo presidency is for Buhari to complete his tenure and now engage the Igbo nation in a decisive move.

“I leave this with my Igbo brothers that the act of negotiation that you have perfected in dealing with merchandise, in dealing with commerce, in dealing with entrepreneurship, must be brought to bear on your navigating your way to the Presidency,” Mustapha said. According to the SGF, the Igbo had an advantage in terms of the homogeneity in the language and culture of the South-East, adding that there was no reason the people cannot resolve to support a particular candidate with their block votes in return for the Presidency in 2023. “Nigeria is a complex society. We come from different diverse background. I come from a state called Adamawa. There are about 96 ethnic communities. We speak different distinct languages.

You have an advantage. You speak only one language in all the five South Eastern states. “I have told you in Adamawa, we speak 96 different ethnic dialects. In a local government, you may find four, five and when they speak; they don’t even understand each other. And the only common denominator with which we communicate is Hausa.

Similarly, it is like that in almost all the states in the northern part of the country. But we have learnt the act of negotiation, accommodation, give and take in the process. We have shared power, even in our small state on a rotational basis that every part would have an opportunity. “In Adamawa State, as a matter of fact, most of the people that have been governor since Adamawa state, except one, come from the minutest of the tribes. That explains exactly what I mean.

It is not the numerical figure, the act of negotiation, the ability to accommodate, the ability to give and take is what would create the prosperous Nigeria of our dream,” Mustapha said. In a welcome address, Kalu, as chief host, had expressed appreciation to President Buhari for counting a daughter of Abia State, Mrs. Georgina Ehuria, worthy of the appointment as Permanent Secretary of the Cabinet Office. Kalu, who described Ehuria as an exceptional lady, said that her appointment was an indication that Buhari was poised to address the issue of marginalization of Igbo in key federal appointments.

He urged the President to continue to do more for the South-East, pledging that the region would back his re-election to the fullest. “This has shown once again that the president is looking towards us, coming to Bende Local Government, in our own home to pick a permanent secretary. We are very grateful, but even when we are thanking him, we are still expecting more that Mr. President should look more towards our area. We are not stopping because if we do, they might not remember us again.

“President Buhari has done very well and also giving us one strong appointment in my local government and we, the Igbo, we have decided; the PDP, APC, APGA, PPA that if the president is running again, he will have 75 per cent vote in the South-East. And this is a statement of fact,” Kalu said.

Dignitaries present at the reception included Mustapha; Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Winifred Oyo-Ita; Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole; Director General, Voice of Nigeria, Mr. Osita Okechukwu and Mr. Femi Adesina, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity.

Others included the Managing Director, Nigeria Pipeline and Storage Company (NPSC), Mr. Luke Anele; a former Deputy Governor of Plateau State, Mrs. Paulien Tallen; former Governor of Ekiti State and Deputy National Chairman of the APC (South), Engr. Segun Oni; former Minister of State, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief Chuka Odom as well as some members of the Diplomatic Corps in Abuja.

  • 2019: ‘Churches now aware there is religion in politics – Demola Olarewaju

2019: ‘Churches now aware there is religion in politics – Demola Olarewaju

    By Demola Olanrewaju

“In the build-up to the 2015 elections, many clerics in parts of the country openly asked their followers to vote against the PDP as it’s candidate was an “infidel”.

Churches have now woken up to the reality of religion in politics and demanding their members get PVCs and vote.

Maybe this is something that can be tapped into to stir voters out of electoral apathy.

Whatever it is, people now realise that there is religion in politics, ethnicity in politics, even gender issues in politics – and yes, they are all real and valid issues.

I’ve seen people (political neophytes mostly) say “these and these tactics” were what got GEJ voted out of power and since PDP can’t replicate it, no hope.

But I remind myself of a lesson I learnt in one joint like that:

There is always more than one way to kill a catfish.
