Over 6,800 illegal immigrants rescued off Libyan coast in 2020

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) said, on Tuesday, that 6,848 illegal immigrants have been rescued and returned to Libya so far in 2020.

IOM said the rescued immigrants include 474 women and 364 minors, adding that 115 illegal immigrants have died and 180 gone missing on the central Mediterranean route in 2020.

“A total of 9,225 illegal immigrants were rescued and returned to Libya in 2019, while 270 people died and 992 were missing,’’ the IOM said.

The fall of the Muammar Gaddafi’s government in 2011 had created a state of insecurity and chaos in Libya.

This made the country, a preferred point of departure for illegal immigrants to cross the Mediterranean Sea towards European shores.

Immigrant shelters in Libya are overcrowded with immigrants, despite repeated international calls to close them.

  • Why Oshiomhole supported me in 2016, hates me in 2020 – Obaseki

Why Oshiomhole supported me in 2016, hates me in 2020 – Obaseki

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo state has alleged that suspended national chairman of the All Progressives Congress(APC), Adams Oshiomhole is angry with him because he didn’t allow him become his godfather.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that Oshiomhole nominated and supported Obaseki against his then opponent and candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu in the 2016 Edo governorship election.

However, the table is now turned as Obaseki who was elected governor on the APC platform with massive support from Oshiomhole who was the then incumbent has now defected to the PDP to battle his rival (Ize-Iyamu) who has now defected to the PDP and enjoys Oshiomhole’s support.

In a statement released by his special adviser on media and communication strategy Crusoe Osagie, Obaseki alleged that Oshiomhole wanted him as a pawn in the gam

According to him, Oshiomhole supported him in 2016 because he had a hidden motive of using him to defraud the people of Edo state.

He also alleged that his refusal to “mortgage the interest of the majority of Edo people for the satisfaction of Oshiomhole and his handful of greedy followers is the cause of the APC chieftain’s bitterness towards him.”

    The statement partly read;

“In 2016 when Oshiomhole nominated and supported Obaseki, his hidden motive was to use Governor Obaseki. who he thought would be a pawn in his game to defraud Edo people and enthrone himself as the ultimate godfather of Edo politics at the expense of the will and wishes of Edo people.

“However, Obaseki’s refusal to mortgage the interest of the majority of Edo people for the satisfaction of Oshiomhole and his handful of greedy followers is the cause of Oshiomhole’s bitterness which has led him to bury himself in pursuit of an innocent governor who is trying to do the right thing for his people.

    5 things to expect from #BBNaija 2020

The Big Brother Naija (Season five) kicks off today with all the pomp and pageantry.

Since 2017 when the show returned to television, after it left the screens for eleven years, Big Brother Naija has kept fans enthralled for at least three months with absorbing drama, verve and suspense.

As the show begins today, there are a number of things to look out for:

    The arrangements

It is believed that organizers will put into consideration safety measures ordered by the Federal Government to combat the spread of COVID-19. It is therefore impossible to put almost 30 housemates together in the same space.

Fans and viewers should look out for two or three houses. It remains to be seen how organizers will run the show, especially when evictions begin

    The housemates

When the show begins tonight, the housemates will be revealed and the battle for success will start. The housemates were all selected online as it was impossible to conduct a physical audition due to COVID-19

    The dramatic housemate

This usually turns out to be a major highlight of the season. In 2017, T-Boss was the housemate. In 2018, it was Cee-C and in 2019, it was Tacha. The dramatic housemate is the toxic one that steps on everyone ‘toes.

    The routine tasks

Big Brother gives the housemates various tasks to perform every season which stretches them. What viewers do not know for now is which tasks it will be.

Various sponsors of the show indulge housemates with assignments and tasks, with mouth-watering prizes to be won.

    Saturday night party

This offers housemates time to unwind, dance and have fun with selected celebrity DJ’s invited into the house to entertain them.

COVID-19 is however expected to play a part here. It remains to be seen how this will play out because this will be in total disregard to the rules of “social distancing”

  • Black lives celebrated, mourned at emotional BET Awards

Black power, suffering and the fight for justice took centre stage at the BET awards on Sunday, the first Black celebrity event in the U.S. since nationwide mass protests broke out this month over systemic racism.

The show, which celebrates Black excellence in music, film, sports and philanthropy, was filled with speeches, songs, images of protests and the names of dozens of Black men and women who have died at the hands of police in recent years.

The BET Awards was established in 2001 by the Black Entertainment Television network to celebrate African Americans and other American minorities in music, acting, sports, and other fields of entertainment over the past year.

Beyonce, who was given a humanitarian award by former U.S. first lady Michelle Obama for her charitable initiatives, urged the Black community to use its vote in upcoming U.S. elections to dismantle “racist and unequal systems.”

“We have to vote like our life depends on it, because it does,” the singer said.

The awards show, broadcast live for the first time in its 20-year history on America’s mainstream CBS channel, featured commercials from the likes of Coca-Cola, Ford, Nissan, P&G, L’Oreal and Facebook that both celebrated the achievements of Black people and highlighted the challenges they face.

A remixed version of veteran New York rap group Public Enemy’s 1989 anthem “Fight the Power,” featuring photos of this month’s street protests, opened the show, whose slogan was “Our culture can’t be canceled.”

Da Baby’s performance of “Rockstar” began with the rapper singing while lying on the ground under the knee of a police officer, in a recreation of last month’s arrest and death of George Floyd in Minneapolis that sparked the protests.

Newcomer Roddy Ricch wore a “Black Lives Matter” shirt, John Legend played his ballad, “We Will Never Break,” and Alicia Keys sang an emotional new song, “Perfect Way to Die,” about the black lives lost over the decades.

The show was a mix of pre-recorded performances and virtual appearances because of the coronavirus pandemic that shut down production of television shows in mid-March.

Awards went to Ricch’s “Please Excuse Me for Being Anti-Social,” which won album of the year, Megan Thee Stallion for best female hip-hop artist and Lizzo was named best female R&B/pop artist.

Gymnast Simone Biles and basketball star LeBron James were named sportswoman and man of the year respectively. Nigerian musician Burna Boy was named best international act.

  • Just in: Senate passes revised 2020 budget of N10.8trn

The Nigerian Senate has passed the revised 2020 budget of N10.8 trillion.

The budget was passed on Thursday after Jibrin Barau, chairman of the appropriation committee, presented a report.

The passage of the budget is coming a day after the house of representatives passed the same figure as the 2020 budget.

The lawmakers increased the budget by N300 billion from N10.5 trillion.

The budget was initially passed in December but it came back to the national assembly after the executive reworked it to reflect the current economic realities.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused the price of crude oil to dwindle thus affecting the major source of the country’s income.

A sum of N500 billion was passed in the budget as an intervention fund for COVID-19. A sum of N186 billion was earmarked for the health sector.

In the revised budget, N422 billion was fixed for statutory transfers, N4.9 trillion for recurrent expenditure and N2.4 trillion is for capital expenditure.

A sum of N2.9 trillion was earmarked for debt servicing.

The senate passed the budget after it dissolved into the committee of supply to approve clauses of the bill.

BBNaija 2020: Leo advises intending participants on how to scale through

Former Big Brother Naija, BBNaija, housemate, Leo Dasilva, has urged intending BBNaija 2020 participants not to post their audition experience on social media.

Dasilva, who was once part of BBNaija wrote: “If you’re auditioning for BBN this year, I’ll advise you not to put it on the TL.

“It’s always a way to disqualify people because it must not be public knowledge if you get in. Wish you all the best.”

  • Film Academy Considering Postponing 2021 Oscars

Film Academy Considering Postponing 2021 Oscars

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is considering postponing the 93rd Oscars, although the big night is scheduled for February 2021.

According to multiple sources, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, say definitive plans are far from being concrete at this juncture, Variety.com said.

The telecast is currently set for Feb. 28, 2021, on ABC.

“It’s likely they’ll be postponed,” one of the sources familiar with the matter told Variety.

However, that person cautioned that the details, including potential new dates, have not been fully discussed or formally proposed yet. Another source says the date is currently unchanged at ABC.

When new temporary rule changes for Oscar eligibility were announced in April because of COVID-19, Academy president David Rubin told Variety it was too soon to know how the 2021 Oscar telecast could change in the wake of the pandemic.

“It’s impossible to know what the landscape will be,” he said. “We know we want to celebrate film but we do not know exactly what form it will take.”

Under the usual rules, a film must have a seven-day theatrical release in Los Angeles County to qualify for Oscar eligibility. But for this year, films released digitally can qualify if the studio had originally planned a theatrical release.

“I think everyone is sympathetic to the filmmakers’ plight and we’re here to support our members and the film community,” Rubin said.

“It makes sense when we don’t really know what’s to come in terms of the availability of theatrical exhibition. … We need to make allowances for this year only and during this time when theaters are not open so great film work can be seen and celebrated.”

The new rule changes also include allowing Oscar-qualifying theatrical runs to take place in New York, Chicago, Miami, Atlanta and the Bay Area, instead of just in Los Angeles.

The Academy declined to comment for this story.

It’s unclear if postponing the Oscars will also mean that the Academy will allow films released after the year-end deadline to qualify for the 2021 Oscars.

  • Despite COVID-19 pandemic, 2020 still has lots to offer – Kemi Adetiba

Despite COVID-19 pandemic, 2020 still has lots to offer – Kemi Adetiba

Filmmaker and music director Kemi Adetiba who is best known for her movies Wedding Party and King of Boys has said she believes the year 2020 still holds many promises unlike most people in the world who have written off the year as a year of total waste with Coronavirus pandemic.

Adetiba made her opinion known through her Twitter and Instagram handles a few days ago.

She tweeted, “Saw a tweet where person wrote they had canceled their goals for 2020 and replaced them with simply “staying alive.” I think 2020 still has more to offer. My dad once said to me “What you lose on the stretch, you gain on the curve.” I pray there is more once we round this bend.”

    The award-winning movie director went on to put up a long epistle on her Instagram page talking about the same thing. She wrote;

“I think 2020 still has more to offer. There is no pretending it is increasingly becoming harder and harder to remain positive in these peculiar times. It is very natural to want to simply throw your hands in the air and give permission for the year to throw you anywhere and anyhow it wills.

“I know it seems unfair to be forced in the position where you have to choose between hunger or health for both yourself and your family, but alas, here we are and there is no running from it.”

She sermonised that lamenting about the situation will not make it disappear, and advise we should give it whatever it takes to live our normal lives.

“Blinking hard or “woe is me” laments will not make it disappear. But if this THING will not play fair, then neither will we. The only thing sure about LIFE is CHANGE. And as long as you have breath… There is always HOPE!!! No one would have predicted an invisible virus would come shut down the entire world for half the year. This is what you call “humbling!!” But as long as the world is still spinning, we have an obligation to keep pushing,” she added.

She prophesied that when things open up it will be survival of the fittest and only those that spent time warming up, prepping, and evolving will gather the most nuts in the end.

Kemi Adetiba is known for many things in the media and entertainment world, but her two films “Wedding Party” and “King of Boys” have been rather extraordinary.

In 2018, King of Boys made history as the biggest ever opening week for a non-comedy Nollywood film before grossing over N245 million in box office worldwide.

  • Why Teni will dominate the Nigerian entertainment scene in 2020

Why Teni will dominate the Nigerian entertainment scene in 2020

Truth be told, If you are asked to predict an artiste that is capable of ruling the Nigerian airwaves, you are likely not to choose the high-spirited Teniola Apata a.k.a Teni the entertainer. She is an unlikely pop star and doesn’t cut the image of your usual Nigerian pop diva. Surprisingly the singer born to a Nigerian civil war-hero father, has become of the country’s most sought after entertainers in a short while.

Her music is anchored by empathy; it comes from the point of view of an artiste who knows the challenges of her audience and just simply sings about them. Teni’s amazing music versatility is as a result of her early exposure to the Juju and highlife melodies of the likes of King Sunny Ade, Ebenezer Obey , Victor Olaiya and lot’s more.

So why would Teni rule the Nigerian entertainment terrain in 2020? One trait you cannot take away from her would be her originality. The ‘Askamaya’ crooner doesn’t take herself too seriously. She is like the girl-next-door who you can relate with .This same authenticity has earned her a devout following, all thanks to her hilarious Instagram videos. In an era where star power relies not just on talent but on relatability, Teni’s originality perhaps is one of her secret weapons. She said in an interview: “Everybody used to say ‘Teni you have to look like this, you have to do this.’ I needed to prove to a lot of people – not the naysayers, – but the young girls like myself, you can be yourself and win.”

Another factor that will make Teni rule the Nigerian entertainment scene in 2020 is her devout fan base. No matter how talented you are as an artiste if you don’t have a huge fan base you are a failure. Success in the music industry can be attained through the strength of fans. The recent success of Teni’s London O2 Arena concert is an indication of the devotion her fan base has for her music. It is one thing to have devout fans, it is another thing to be able to engage them. Teni does this effortlessly. She feels the pulse of her fans and creates content that appeals to them. One of the reasons why her song, ‘Billionaire’ resonates with Nigerians is because it captures their aspirations. The song is an aspirational anthem for anyone who dreams of succeeding.

In an industry where talent is sometimes underrated over charm, glamour and charisma, Teni’s musical dexterity is not in doubt. Her Instagram page is replete with short melodious videos where the award-winning singer can be seen freestyling to a music progression. Little wonder she calls herself ‘the one take god’.

Yes the industry prefers its female entertainers skinny, flesh-baring with sex appeal to burn, but Teni is a total departure from this template. Rather she wears her baggy pants and allows her personality and talent to shine through. She would definitely be here for long.
