2021 AFCON: Holders Algeria held by Sierra Leone

Riyad Mahrez and his teammates failed to spark as reigning Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champions Algeria drew goalless with Sierra Leone in their opening Group E fixture on Tuesday.

Heading into the delayed 2021 tournament aiming to become the first team to win consecutive AFCON titles since Egypt won three in a row between 2006 and 2010, Algeria were favorites.

They dominated the game in Douala but could not find a way through Sierra Leone’s solid rearguard.

Appearing at only their third AFCON finals and their first since 1996, Sierra Leone went close themselves midway through the first half through Alhaji Kamara and Umaru Bangura.

But they only managed one attempt on target throughout.

The second half was all Algeria, yet Mohamed Kamara pulled off some excellent saves to deny Yacine Brahimi and Manchester City’s Mahrez.

One-time England international Steven Caulker made a superb block from Sofiane Bendebka.

Algeria were able to call on the likes of Baghdad Bounedjah —- who netted the winner against Senegal in the 2019 final – and Said Benrahma from the bench.

But the West Ham attacker spurned a glorious opportunity late on as the holders’ profligacy proved costly in an underwhelming start to their title defence.

They are in a group that also includes Côte d’Ivoire and Equatorial Guinea.

JUST IN: CAF postpones 2021 AFCON

The Confederation of African Football Executive Committee on Tuesday announced the postponement of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

It said the competition will now hold in Cameroon in January 2022.

The decision was reached after the committee met via video-conference to discuss the future of competitions and other related issues amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“After consultation with stakeholders and taking into consideration the current global situation, the tournament has been rescheduled for January 2022.

“The date for the final tournament and the remaining matches of the qualifiers will be communicated in due course,” the football body said in a statement.

CAF also rescheduled the finals of the African Nations Championship 2020, shifting it to January 2021 also in Cameroon.

“The CAF Executive Committee is satisfied with t the Cameroonian authorities for their commitment towards the hosting of the two competitions. Cameroon is ready to host either competition and are within schedule,” CAF President, Ahmad Ahmad said.

The statement reads “The Total CAF Champions League and Total CAF Confederation Cup, will resume in September with a Final Four (4) format. Semi-Final matches will be played in a single match.

“Due to challenging conditions, the 2020 edition of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations has been cancelled.

  • CAF reschedule 2021 AFCON

The 2021 Africa Cup of Nations will start on 9 January after its dates were moved, hosts Cameroon have announced.

The tournament was scheduled to take place in June and July but was changed because of the “unfavourable” weather in the country at that time of year.

It means a number of Premier League clubs could be without first-team players at a crucial stage of the season.

The 2019 tournament in Egypt was the first one to be held in the summer.

Before that, the Cup of Nations had been held in January and February, clashing with the European domestic season.

The change back to a January start means that the tournament will not clash with the expanded Club World Cup, being held in China in June 2021.

Following a meeting on Wednesday with representatives from the Confederation of African Football (Caf), including president Ahmad, the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot) tweeted: “It [2021 Africa Cup of Nations] will be played in Cameroon from 9 January to 6 February, 2021. Date changed for weather reasons at Cameroon’s request.”

Caf’s deputy general secretary Tony Baffoe said: “We have reviewed the period of the competition as requested by the Cameroonian party due to unfavourable climatic conditions during the period initially slated.

“After listening to the various arguments and viewpoints – and in particular from the Cameroonian meteorological authorities, the coaches and players – the representatives of the Afcon organising committee, which received the mandate from Caf Executive Committee to take the decision, has granted this request.

“A detailed reported shall be presented to the members of the Executive Committee during its next session on 6 February.”

Cameroon had been scheduled to host the 2019 Cup of Nations, but were stripped of that honour in November 2018. At the time, Caf said the decision had been made because of delays in the progress of Cameroon’s preparations.

A month later, Caf announced that Cameroon had agreed to host the 2021 edition instead.

  • CAF to reschedule 2021 AFCON

President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Ahmad Ahmad, has said the dates for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations could be reverted to the old calendar, because of unfavourable June and July climatic conditions in Cameroon.

This year, Egypt hosted the AFCON in June and July, with the tournament moved from the traditional January and February period.

With rains expected in the middle of the year in Cameroon, Ahmad feels it is not condusive to have the tournament then.

“When we took the decision to move the Africa Cup of Nations to June, which we did for the last tournament in Egypt, we have always said that we need to have some flexibility over the dates,” Ahmad told Inside World Football.

“This is because of the different climatic conditions in the continent. In my view, it is not possible, because of the climatic conditions in Cameroon, to stage the Africa Cup of Nations in June/July. This is clear, so we must take a decision on the date.”
