  • FIFA questioned over Messi’s wearing of black bisht before World Cup presentation

FIFA questioned over Messi’s wearing of black bisht before World Cup presentation

Former Tottenham soccer star, Ramon Vega has questioned FIFA for allowing Qatar to dress Messi in a black Arab robe before the World Cup trophy presentation on Sunday, shortly after the 4-2 penalty win against France at the Lusail Stadium.

Shortly before being presented with the trophy, Messi was robed in a black attire as a means of honouring the World Cup winner.

Before the crowning moment, the Paris Saint-Germain forward was greeted by FIFA president, Gianni Infantino and the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who dressed him in a traditional Arab attire known as bisht.

The traditional garment signifies honour and prestige and is particularly worn at major occasions such as weddings and other events.

According to Vega FIFA broke its own rules by allowing him to be robed in the black attire.

In a tweet via his Twitter handle on Monday, Vega drew attention to a section of FIFA’s rulebook, which stated that ‘celebratory attire’ may only be worn after some formalities had been carried out.

Rule 27.2 stated: “In FIFA final competitions, celebratory attire may only be worn on the field of play after the following official FIFA activities have taken place (during which the team must wear the shirts they wore during the match in question).

“[These include:] the trophy presentation, official FIFA photographs and official media appearances.”

Vega then accompanied his image of the rulebook with a series of questioning emojis, clearly confused as to why the World football governing body had allowed Qatar to carry out the ritual.

Davido performed at the world stage alongside other artists from around the world – Aisha, Ozun and GIMS.

Davido and Aisha performed “Better Together,” while Ozuna and GIMS sang “Arhbo.”

After his performance on Sunday night, excited Nigerians took to social media to express their love and support and hail the music star for a beautiful performance at the world stage, many saying Davido made Nigeria proud.

Qatar bribery: EU parliament moves to sack vice president Kaili Eva

The European Union (EU) Parliament has voted for the termination of the appointment of Vice President Eva Kaili, over a bribery allegation traced to Qatar, the host of the 2022 world cup.

Recall that Eva Kaili alongside three others was imprisoned in Belgium following police investigation into alleged corruption linked with Qatar.

Greek socialist MEP Eva Kaili’s lawyer has declared that she “has nothing to do with Qatar’s bribes”, claiming she was innocent of the allegations

The parliament’s president, Maltese conservative Roberta Metsola, convened the leaders of political groups before calling on MEPs to vote “on the early termination of office of Vice President Eva Kaili”.

A Belgian judge will decide tomorrow whether to maintain her and three co-accused in custody pending her trial.

She was arrested last week during a series of raids on the homes and offices of several MEPs and their assistants or associates carried out by Belgian graft investigators.

Belgian prosecutors said 600,000 euros ($630,000) were found at the home of one suspect, 150,000 euros at the flat of an MEP, and several hundred thousand euros in a suitcase in a hotel room.

Some of these “bags of cash” were found in Kaili’s home, a judicial source said, leading a judge to conclude that, as she had apparently been caught red-handed her parliamentary immunity would not apply.

A Belgian judicial source told AFP that investigators believe that figures representing Gulf monarchy Qatar had been paying off European politicians to burnish the country’s image.

Qatar has denied any involvement in European corruption. “Any claims of misconduct by the State of Qatar are gravely misinformed,” an official told AFP.

Kaili’s lawyer Michalis Dimitrakopoulos told private Greek television channel Open TV: “Her position is she is innocent. She has nothing to do with Qatar’s bribes.”

Asked if any cash was found at Kaili’s home, Dimitrakopoulos said: “I am not confirming or denying. There is confidentiality. I have no idea if money was found or how much was found.”

World Cup Closing Ceremony: Davido set to perform months after son’s death

Afrobeat superstar, David Adeleke, aka Davido, is set to return to the stage to grace the closing ceremony at The 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The singer was first seen a couple of weeks ago when he came out in support of his uncle, Ademola Adeleke, during his inauguration ceremony.

The internet is going wild with joy as Afrobeats singer, Davido is set to perform at the ongoing 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

However, Hong Kong businessman, Stephen Hung, has confirmed the news of his performance and shared in excitement via his official Instagram page

He claimed that the singer had confirmed that he will be closing the ceremony at the World Cup.

Expressing excitement, Stephen Hung stated that he can’t wait to see him.

“So happy my bro @Davido confirmed he will be performing at the World cup Qatar closing ceremony. Can’t wait to see him there”.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) recalls that Davido’s highly publicized festival, A.W.A.Y. (Are We African Yet?) was postponed until November 2023, following the death of his son, Ifeanyi.

The announcement was contained in a Wednesday (November 9) press release issued by the BET Award-winning musician’s management. “It is necessary for Davido to spend time with his family and loved ones at this time,” the management said.

On Monday, October 31, Davido’s three-year-old son, Ifeanyi Adeleke, passed away, having drowned, according to multiple local reports. Following his death, local police detained eight domestic workers for questioning in connection with the incident, which is said to have occurred in the swimming pool at the home of the Afrobeats star and his fiancée, chef and influencer Chioma Rowland. It was just last month, during a trip to London, that the couple officially announced their plans to marry next year.

The A.W.A.Y. (Are We African Yet?) music festival, which was originally scheduled for November 18 at Atlanta’s State Farm Arena, has been pushed back to November 2023. The one-day event is being promoted as an annual celebration of African music and culture in the diaspora, attracting major artists from Africa and the United States while encouraging collaboration among creatives.

All purchased tickets, according to management, are still valid and “will be honored for the 2023 date.”

Meanwhile, Davido has removed all event flyers from his social media pages, implying that all scheduled shows, including his much-anticipated FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 performance, have been canceled or postponed.

  • Qatar 2022: Fr.Mhanna shares experience of unusual Christian practice in oil rich country

Qatar 2022: Fr.Mhanna shares experience of unusual Christian practice in oil rich country

When Father Charbel Mhanna was posted to the Arab nation of Qatar nine years ago, he didn’t know much of what was in the offing for him.

The Lebanese cleric had packed his bag and baggage to continue the mission of the Roman Catholic in far away Qatar. All the cleric wanted was to win souls and continue propagating the gospel of the Lord anywhere he finds himself.

Qatar is predominantly a Muslim country but they still give room for non-Muslims to do practice their religion in the country as long as it conforms with the laid down rules , regulations and restrictions of the country.

Christianity is being practiced as a unit that operates under the  Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the country..

In an interview in Arabic with ACI Mena, CNA’s news partner in the Middle East, Fr. Mhanna shares his experience as a Christian cleric living in Qatar.

Father Mhanna  ministers to Maronite Catholics living in Qatar as well as Italian and French-speaking communities at the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary in Doha.

The Christian community in Qatar is about 300,000 thousand persons comprising mainly of foreigners living or working in the oil-rich country. They are mostly Italians, Spanish, Greeks, Philipinnos etc and they have to practice their own religion.

According to Fr. Mhanna, churches are considered embassies” that deal with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the country, explained that there are no bells or crosses on church buildings in Qatar.

Religious processions are only allowed to take place within the walls of the Qatar Religious Complex, a complex opened in 2008 that holds six different churches: Roman Catholic, Anglican, Syrian Orthodox, Greek Orthodox, Coptic Orthodox, and an interdenominational group for Indian expatriate Christian communities.

“Copies of the Bible can [only] be distributed inside the church complex campus,” Mhanna said.

“We give eucharistic Communion to patients in hospitals without any problem and we can pray in cemeteries, as there are tombs for non-Muslims,” he said.

“We also have every liberty to preach. No one ever interfered with my sermons. We recite our spiritual words without restrictions,” he added.

Fr. Mhanna noted that conduct of marriage is a peculiar  case, noting that the priest is only allowed to celebrate a wedding between two Christians. He said: “If a Christian wants to marry a Muslim, they cannot get married in our church. We usually invite them to marry in another country.”

According to the vicariate, employment and camp rules can make participation in Catholic liturgies impossible for some of these

The Catholic community also struggles with restrictions on the number of priests allowed in the country and the limited capacity of its church inside the religious complex.

Mhanna is currently overseeing the construction of a new Catholic church in Qatar — a Maronite Catholic church that will have a capacity of 1,500 people.

“Qatar provided land on which we can build today a church in the name of St. Charbel,” he said.

Cardinal Bechara Boutros Rai, the Maronite Catholic patriarch, laid the foundation stone for the church in 2018 at the invitation of Qatar’s Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

“The church is in the process of being finished,” Mhanna said.

However, Fr.Mhanna was given the opportunity to enter the Stadium during the opening ceremony as a cleric robed in White, he attended with other Christian clerics operating from the religious complex in Qatar but they must maintain their Ministry of foreign affairs status.

Chelsea midfielder, Kante undergoes successful surgery, out of World Cup

TheNewsGuru.com reports that Kante has joined the list of clubs whose players would miss the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, which will take place from November 20 to December 18, with 32 teams to compete in eight groups.

Kante is a French professional footballer and France is expected to play its first match at 2022 FIFA World Cup against Australia on November 22.

FIFA is set to pay the sum of $209m to clubs whose players feature at the World Cup while Insurance benefits add up to $134m.

The 31-year-old suffered a setback while on the comeback trail following injury in mid-August.

Kante’s issue is the latest in a long line of problems to have plagued him over the last 12 months, with last season also decimated by injury.

The midfielder was limited to only 21 Premier League starts last time out and has not played since Chelsea’s dramatic 2-2 draw with Tottenham almost three months ago.

Kante’s contract is due to expire next summer and talks over an extension have stalled after he wanted a longer-term agreement than the two-year deal offered that included a club option for an extra year.

While keen on extending his stay in west London, Kante will be able to talk to foreign clubs over the prospect of a free transfer in January.

Kanté is widely praised for his work rate and defensive acumen. He made his senior professional debut with Boulogne in 2012, appearing as a substitute in one Ligue 2 match, and played an entire season in the third division the following year.

After that he joined Ligue 2 side Caen on a free transfer, finished third and won promotion to Ligue 1. He stayed with the club for one more year. In 2015, Kanté joined Leicester City for a fee worth £5.6 million.

Kanté was an integral part of the Leicester City team that went on to become surprise Premier League champions in 2016. The following year, he joined Chelsea for a fee worth £32 million and again won the league, making him the first outfield player to win consecutive English league titles with different clubs since Eric Cantona in 1992 and 1993.

With Chelsea, he has won the FA Cup, the UEFA Europa League, the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, the FIFA Club World Cup. Individually, Kante has been awarded the Premier League Player of the Season, the PFA Players’ Player of the Year, the FWA Footballer of the Year, the UEFA Men’s Midfielder of the year and the Trophées UNFP for Best French Player Abroad twice.

Kanté made his senior international debut for France in 2016 and was included in the squad that finished runners-up at the 2016 European Championship.

In 2017 Kanté was named the French Player of the Year, a first for a player from the Premier League in seven years, and twelve months later was a key member of the 2018 FIFA World Cup winning squad.

  • Saka out of England squad after positive COVID-19 test

Saka out of England squad after positive COVID-19 test

Bukayo Saka left the England squad on Thursday after testing positive for COVID-19.

Three Lions’ manager Gareth Southgate has had to deal with a number of withdrawals since naming his 25-man squad last Thursday.

Saka has become the latest to leave the group taking on Switzerland and Côte d’Ivoire after returning a positive coronavirus result.

A statement from the Football Association (FA) read: “Bukayo Saka has left the England camp having tested positive for COVID-19.

“The Arsenal player had been isolating from the rest of the squad at St George’s Park since Wednesday and has now returned home.

“No further replacements are planned with a squad of 24 in place for the forthcoming fixtures.”

Saka tweeted: “I am gutted to withdraw from @England camp but I have tested positive for COVID-19 and I will be isolating until I am negative.

“I’ll be supporting the boys from home this weekend and I can’t wait to be back doing what I love soon”

Arsenal forward Saka, who trained with the group on Tuesday, is the sixth player to drop out of the England camp.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Reece James, Tammy Abraham and Aaron Ramsdale were ruled out through injury on Monday.

The uncapped duo of Kyle Walker-Peters and Tyrick Mitchell were brought in along with Ollie Watkins and Sam Johnstone, only for the latter to then withdraw.

Also, Fraser Forster was called in.

England kick off their 2022 World Cup preparations with a home friendly against Switzerland on Saturday, before welcoming Côte d’Ivoire to Wembley on Tuesday evening.

  • Why I will not watch 2022 World Cup – Eric Cantona

Why I will not watch 2022 World Cup – Eric Cantona

Manchester United legend, Eric Cantona has revealed he will not watch the 2022 World Cup holding in Qatar.

The former France international has been very critical about FIFA’s decision to award Qatar the showpiece event and sees no justification for having done so. He also highlighted the dreadful conditions that workers have been subjected to in the construction of the stadia for the tournament.

‘To be honest, I don’t really care about the next World Cup, which is not a real World Cup for me. In the last decades, you had a lot of events like the Olympic Games or World Cups in countries that are emerging – like in Russia or China, Cantona told Sportsmail.

‘But Qatar – it’s not the country of football. I’m not against the idea of hosting a World Cup in a country where there is a possibility to develop and promote football, like in South Africa or the United States in the 90’s.

‘Football is the most popular feminine sport in the United States, there is a lot of South American immigration, and a big potential for the sport to develop.

‘In fact, now in the United States, the sport which has the most licensed people is football. But in Qatar, the truth is that there is no such potential. There is nothing. It’s only about money I think.

‘It’s only about money and the way they treated the people who built the stadiums, it’s horrible. And thousands of people died. And yet we will celebrate this World Cup.’

He went on: ‘Personally, I will not watch it. I understand football is a business. But I thought it was the only place where everybody could have a chance.

‘And I still think that young players can grow up in a very poor area – most players come from poor areas. And they become footballers and have a chance to save themselves and save their family which is great. And if you are good, you are good. It’s a meritocracy – if you’re better than the next guy, you will play and it’s fair.

‘So it’s why, maybe, if meritocracy and potential is the essence of football, it’s even more surprising that we can organize a World Cup in Qatar, and people actually voted for that.’

His criticism comes after reports last year that a huge number of migrant workers allegedly died in the Middle Eastern country as they built cities, roads and stadiums out of the desert sand under extreme temperatures.

Relatives of the workers believe their deaths have resulted from being forced to toil too long under the burning sun without shade, breaks and water in temperatures exceeding 40C for just £8.30 a day.

It is believed FIFA will make more than £3billion from the world cup this summer.

  • Timo Werner secures Germany’s ticket to 2022 FIFA World Cup

Timo Werner secures Germany’s ticket to 2022 FIFA World Cup

Germany became the first country to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar on Monday with Timo Werner scoring twice in a 4-0 win away to North Macedonia.

The fifth victory in five matches under new coach Hansi Flick, matching the record of predecessor Joachim Loew, has given Germany an unassailable lead at the top of Group J.

But that was also due to to Armenia losing 1-0 to Romania elsewhere.

Germany dominated throughout against the side who inflicted only a third-ever World Cup qualifying defeat against them at home in March.

But they needed until the second half to make the breakthrough.

Kai Havertz tapped into an empty net to cap a fine counter-attack in the 50th minute to break the North Macedonian resistance.

The lively Werner then smashed a quick-fire brace before teenager Jamal Musiala completed the rout with his first senior international goal.

Germany have 21 points from eight games before concluding the campaign in November at home to Liechtenstein and away to Armenia, who are now fourth on 12 points.

Romania, on 13, are best-placed to secure second and the play-off spot but North Macedonia, above Armenia on goal difference, are also in contention.

“We have now qualified, that is very, very important first of all for us and it gives us confidence for the next games,” Havertz said in an interview.

Team captain Manuel Neuer, back in goals after injury, agreed the team should now have high ambitions.

“If we play for Germany the goal is always to win titles, to reach the highest goals possible. That’s how we will approach it there.”

Flick made five changes to the team which beat Romania last time out, with Mueller and Havertz also coming into the attack and proving decisive.

Home goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski denied first Joshua Kimmich then Werner, who was actually offside, and had help from the post when the Chelsea forward beat him on the stroke of half-time.

It was Werner’s Stamford Bridge colleague Havertz who did find the net when a brilliant pass from Serge Gnabry released Mueller.

The Bayern Munich man laid the ball off for a simple finish rather than shoot himself.

“We have qualified as quickly as possible,” said Flick. “We also have to give the team a compliment for their attitude today (Monday).

“We can be happy that we’ve also finished this game with a win.”

Mueller, who notched the winner against Romania on Friday, was provider again to set up Werner in the 70th minute with a clever flick following a quick free-kick.

Werner’s superb curling shot from the edge of the penalty box three minutes later had Germany cruising.

In the closing stages, Musiala converted an assist from fellow substitute Karim Adeyemi.
